Hello everyone,

As bands release new albums, I have been let down by quite a few, Fall of Troy's "In The Unlikely Event" BFMV's "Fever" and what I have heard of Coheed & Cambria's "Year of the Black Rainbow" this saddens me deeply as there previous efforts have been fantastical.

On the other hand, Cancer Bats, Dillinger Escape Plan and HIM have released new albums and they have been absolutely flingin' flangin' amazing.

So I ask you escapist, what new/latest releases from your favoured artists has let you down or given you reason to love them again?

I was initially disappointed with Assemblage 23's new album "Compass", but the more I listened to it the more I enjoyed it, to the point where I had it playing in my car for about a month solid.

I was disappointed with the last album I bought from VNV Nation 'Judgement', enough so that I have put of buying their new one as well.

Nothing. Seriously.

I just don't understand the mentality behind people being 'let down' by their favourite bands. If the band in question is great and suddenly releases something like you'd hear the Pussycat Dolls or BrokenCyde (two absolutely terrible groups) sing, then fine, I understand. But people apply that label to stuff like a band changing direction slightly or not doing an album exactly how the 'fans' want it.

Muse had that with 'The Resistance'. Greenday had it with '21st Century Breakdown'. Arctic Monkeys had it with 'Humbug'. Even Linkin Park, with 'Minutes to Midnight'. Now, I've heard songs from, or owned, ll of those albums. And I'm also a big fan of all the earlier stuff from each band too. I thought the newer stuff was as good as, if not better than, the earlier stuff.

It's a catch-22 situation. If a band changes their style, even just a tiny bit or to be experimental, the fans complain that they're too 'different' and have gotten worse. If the band stays the same, the fans complain that they're getting old and boring and stale. So it's much more difficult to please anyone after the first album has been released and liked.

Solution? Please, people, just don't compare albums to older ones. If a band releases two albums in two years, then feel free to compare them on whether or not they're actually any good. But as far as musical style, lyrics, whatever, goes then treat them as standalone works. Which is what they are. I definitely didn't feel disappointed when Linkin Park started all their Jay-Z collabs and produced Minutes to Midnight, or recent single New Divide. But then, perhaps I'm not a 'real fan', am I?

Two of my favourite bands, MGMT and Crystal Castles, both recently released new albums.

I've done full reviews of them elsewhere, but suffice it to say they have both given me new reason to love humanity. I mean, they really are that fucking good.

Carbon Leaf's Nothing Rhymes With Women was kind of disappointing. The band is seriously going in a more boy band direction and are abandoning their folk root and ignoring their dalliance celtic rock. It really showed at their last performance I went to. I loved that most of the crowd had no idea why they were playing some obviously folkier songs, while a couple of people in the front with me were singing along to songs from their first couple of albums.

Fair points although it assumes that peoples dislike stems from changes made since previous albums which is not always the case. Assemblage 23 for example, their new album reminds me of their older stuff (late 80's) and I like pretty much all of their music.

With VNV Nation I dislike their newer album because it feels uninspired and doesn't have the same kind of passion as some of their other albums. They seem to just re-use the same basic ideas for their songs and actually suffer from too much similarity rather than changing or evolving their music.

Opeth's latest album made me remember why they are untouchable. Also, I'm always waiting for Lamb Of God to let me down, "Wrath" just proved they're f**king awesome! And "New Junk Aesthetic" by ETID blew me away. No disappointments that I can think of, probably because I don't listen to shit bands.

Shit, between your opinion on this and twilight, I'm actually in love with your mentality :D

OT: None of the bands I like have released new albums recently.

Crack the Skye and Wrath stick out in my mind as the most recent ones...I loved Wrath, and though Crack the Skye wasn't in the same vein as previous albums, it was still not bad.

When I saw "Wrath" there I thought that you were gonna say it was a let down.
Good to know I won't have to lynch you.

OT: Marilyn Manson's Eat Me, Drink Me was a pretty big let down. I like some of the songs off it, and it's not terrible, but I don't think it captured his talent.
The High End of Low wasn't too bad though.

The Arctic Monkeys' Humbug is... almost too different. I mean, I like it, but not as much as their other albums.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I still like it, and they're still one of my favourite groups
