I either buy a proper disc repair kit from somewhere like Comet, Currys or PC World, or I take the disc somewhere like GAME or a proper repair shop to get it done. I rarely repair discs myself anyway, there's warranty and reciepts for a reason

Yeah most DVD rental places have their own professional or semi-professional disc resurfacing equipment for maintaining their stock, and will clean your discs for a couple bucks usually. It's the most effective solution if you don't wanna risk doing more harm than good.
