OTOH, a lot of films nowdays don't stand by themselves, they have to get people going "Hey, it's that person who was that other role in that other film" to watch them. Otherwise big names probably wouldn't be big names.
Films nowadays? Like, is John Wayne chopped liver to you?

If anything, Hollywood star is more diluted today than what it used to be

Finally saw Villeneuve's (first) Dune. The color palette did indeed annoy me. The ornithopters surprisingly didn't. I found the first half absolutely terrific. The second half unconvincing, I think Lynch was right to skip this whole odyssey through the desert. Also a bit disappointed by Liet's death (devoid of ecological epiphany) and by the absence of of my favorite pivotal line/moment (how does it feel to be a killer). I did also find the cast of celebrities distracting. So, all in all, quite good, but not the overwhelming masterpiece that I was expecting (before and during the film). If it had retained the first half's intensity, it might have been.
I saw it at the cinemas. It was incredibly loud, by far the loudest movie I've ever seen... I'm only ever going to see the second half at home

Villeneuve is known for his sweeping vista. Great. I don't know why I'm spending minutes looking at each background and then major portions of the book are cut from the air time. Those major portion which the Duke trains his kid in being perceptive, manipulating situations and people and shows how smart the Duke was. Now, we have a Duke that's a dumbass and is hoping someone else will save him. Hakkonen beat a easy opponent in the movie, which makes him less of a threat

Certainly, that is true.
In fact, Anthony Mackie has the exact opposite critique because most actors are out-shown by their own super-heroic characters. On one hand, there must be a good balance; but then, the MCU seems like good balance to me because I know most of the actor names and often only because they're in the MCU!

Quite possibley I'm behind the times and recognise actors more than roles more than most people nowdays do.

EDIT: Possibly, not possible

Some cute quirky-yet-awkward comedy set in a sleepy Welsh village about a simple lonely guy who builds random tat and loves cabbages (not in that way). The direction is kinda mockumentary-ish, vaguely? Ends up building a "robot" one day who gains sapience and talks eerily familiar to the playable robot character in the game Horace. Throw in some Welsh farmer bullies and one of the most awkward romances I've seen in recent times and it's a recommendable sealed deal!

Everything Everywhere All at Once

A movie with this much hyperactive insanity shouldn’t have been nearly two and a half hours long. Another one I fell asleep to and took three nights to finish. You really have to be in a certain mood for this one to stick. Otherwise it’s like getting slapped in the face by a thousand dildos per second.

E.T.

The quintessential 80s movie. Kids in bikes, Halloween in suburbia, DnD, space creatures and Adults Who Don't Get It. As someone with zero nostalgia for any of that and no real history with E.T. (saw parts of it in class like 20, 25 years ago) I can confirm it absolutely holds up, if anybody was wondering.

It's also kinda impossible not to think back to The Fabelmans, considering Dee Wallace's and Peter Coyote's characters. The eternal push and pull between marvelling at something and wanting to cut it open really marked Steven.

The original version, or the new one where the FBI has their guns replaced with radios?

Puss In Boots: THe Last Wish
The story of a heroic cat who makes a deal with a genie to be united with the sorceress he loves no matter where their lives take them, for better or worse....

No it's the Shrek spinoff thing that everybody loves the crap out of, so wife and I were curious and it was fine, I guess, I dunno, a children's cartoon, not sure exactly why everybody's losing their mind over it. Maybe expectations were low? Folks like to be all "ACTUALLY it was good!" or something.
It was very cute, I liked the goldilocks and bears thing. It was all incredibly silly, and that's fine because it is- and I can't stress this enough- a children's cartoon. Sometimes I see adults lose their mind over their kids' entertainment (I'm looking at you, the past 20 years of Harry Potter stupidity) and I'm like, grow up please? But it's harmless fun.

  1. Antonio Banderas as the lead role again. There are people in their 60s that still go crazy for the guy. It's the voice. My mom and older brother love the shit out of this character and sub-franchise. Shrek might as well almost not exist for them.
  2. The last one is really good.
  3. It's not another Pixar or Disney animated film. Not helping matters is that Pixar has been on a decline with most of their recent output being either okay or less than mediocre.
  4. The Last Wish is taking influence from Spider-Verse in terms of animation style.
  5. It's has that Shrek theme of deconstructing fairy tales and other animated films without being up its own ass like the Shrek sequels after 2, or many of DreamWorks dork age throughout the mid 2000s.
  6. People love the villain, because they don't try to force a sympathetic backstory a lot of animated movies and shows have been doing for a while. I don't mind that type of writing, but it has been over done and a good amount have done it poorly or failed at making the villain(s) sympathetic. Here's a villain that is just a card carrying villain with none of the extra baggage and embraces it.
I plan on seeing the movie later, so no spoilers, if you're adding any.

The thing with villains who are the card carrying type is we still need something to explain why they have followers; it’s less of an issue with solo villains. This isn’t a criticism of Puss in Boots since I haven’t seen it, but villains still need some kind of goal or reason for what they’re doing and able to convince other people to help. Now it doesn’t need to be complex. Emperor Palpatine, most Megatron incarnations, the Shredder, Krulos, Ruber, Hans Gruber et al have very straight forward motivations and ones that will seem enticing to the right sort of person.

It’s when your villain at the head of massive armies is a literal giggling psychopath that this becomes somewhat more suspect. It’s not impossible by any means - Baptiste from Lord of War is a great example - but you’re in for a rougher time making your audience buy it.

Again, no shade to Puss In Boots cos clearly its guys did their thing and did it right. So hopefully they can leverage that for future success.

So, like, almost every Batman villain? The beloved array of Batman villains seem to have endless armies of goons and henchmen who are happy to sacrifice their lives for their lunatic leader's desire to have a laugh.

I would have mentioned several high profile rightwingers IRL, but whatever.

Think Texas Chainsaw Massacre minus a chainsaw, but replace Leatherface with a creepy old couple and toss in a porno shoot for good measure.

I haven't seen Pearl, which this is a long distant sequel to, but I want to now.

I just watched Bodies Bodies Bodies, a movie about a bunch of Gen Z-ers who Gen Z eachother to death. It was pretty entertaining overall, although the ending felt a bit too 'dumb kids and their phones, imma right?!' Let's just say that for a movie that actively tries to lampoon modern society it really didn't aggravate me in any real way (again apart from the ending kinda), as opposed to Glass Onion.

It was also directed by Halina Reijn, who is a relatively famous actress in my country (though I've never been a big fan of her, but then I'm not a big fan of any Dutch actor really), and it seems she actually has some real chops as a director.
