Watched a couple movies on a flight, and they were both exactly what I look for on a flight: just passably amusing enough to distract me from the fact that our air safety is being increasingly compromised by my self-destructive countrymen but not so good that I regret having watched it on a tiny screen on the back of someone's head:

Saturday Night
The recent movie about the first episode of Saturday Night Live. I figured it would be a love letter to itself since the main character, Lorne Michaels, is still the producer of SNL so yes indeed it does portray him, his writers and the cast as visionary comedic bad-boys. However, the movie worked well enough due to its intense pacing, brevity, and the remarkable job most of the cast did of channeling the publicly held perceptions of the people involved.
I did not recognize any of the actors playing the cast except one- the black guy from New Girl- and I don't know how accurate they were to their real counterparts but if you ever did watch any of the original SNL you can imagine it being true. The guy playing Dan Ackroyd for example mimicked his tone and cadence perfectly and captured the spirit of his motor-mouth verbally dense approach to comedy. The guy playing Chevy Chase did a good job playing an asshole and this is all he had to do since the real Chase has really worked hard to earn that reputation. The women and the one black guy got short shrift in terms of focus and responsibility which is either ironic or too clever by half because they even talked about that happening to them in the movie!
There were some more well-known folks in smaller roles- Willem Defoe as a Evil Corporate Man, Matthey Rhys as host George Carlin, and J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle. They all chewed their scenery and it was all very surreal and kind of stupid to watch anyone try to impersonate these legends.

My least favorite part was everything with John Belushi. They really portrayed him as some sort of horrible monstrous man-child and I don't know what would be worse- that he really was like that or that the movie just did him really dirty. Other wise, the rest of this movie could have been a lot worse.

Free Guy
Ryan Reynolds plays... well, look, you know his deal, and either you can be amused by it for a shy 80 minutes or you can't. I actually can- I'll take a handsome goofball, why not. This movie is about video games actually and it's as silly as that sounds. It's... ok. Some very good visual gags. Also has the girl from Killing Eve (not Eve, the one that's killing Eve), The skinny guy with nice hair from Stranger Things, and Taik Watiti. It was very stupid but the action sequences, ironic-by-half musical drops, and quipity quips helped drown out ~40% of the brat in row 12 that would not stop shrieking for the whole f'n flight.

I just watched The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard with my older brother. That movie is so much better and funnier than Free Guy. Free Guy is already one of those movies that will be forgotten and all of the "hot Twitch/YouTuber streamers" which came along with the film.

Thanks to Amazon Prime, I got to watch Superman (2025) at early screening.

Yes.

The best way I can describe it is if the classic superman movies were remade. And I do not mean that in a patronizing or derogatory way. This Superman represents hope, justice, doing the right thing, and learning to do better despite screwing things up. The tone of the movie is also very reminiscent of the classic Superman movies.

I am not gonna say it’s better than Snyder version; because both are such an amazing take of who superman is.

Seriously, go see it on the release date, or whenever you get the chance.

Cool. There's no way I'm going to the theater for it but a not-terrible superhero movie with the Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a good home movie night in a few months.

I heard there were other superheros in it also.

There are! Aside from the ones shown in the trailers, there are ones who make surprise cameos.

not just superheroes, as some other familiar characters from DC comics also makes their appearance

Y'know, as exhausted as I am with the deluge of superhero movies we've experienced of the past several years, for some reason, this one has been calling to me. I don't know why; I've no significant nostalgia or deference for Superman; I've not particularly enjoyed him as a character in recent memory, but every time the trailer comes on, I feel drawn to it. I think (I know) I'm going to watch it, probably this weekend, just to quell this ominous curiosity. I kinda hope I'm going to hate it? I dunno, just to confirm this curiosity is an unfounded anomaly and spare me giving in to any future anomalous curiosities.

Also, The Batman (2022) was the last hero film that piqued my interest, and it ended up being my favorite Batman film since The Dark Knight, and Robert Pattinson became my favorite cinematic Batman of all time, so who knows; maybe this is the Superman movie I need?

I thought Superman was great. My biggest worry was that it would look like shit, which I think the trailers did a little, but in the theater, I thought the cinematography and visuals looked great. Doesn't come off as cheap MCU slop at all.

Casting was great all around. Corenswet as Supes is perfect, Luthor was great (I'm sorry to his actor, he's probably the most famous in the cast but I can't remember his name), and Lois didn't annoy the balls off me for once. If you were worried that the Justice Society characters being in this makes the movie feel too cramped, don't be. They're barely in it, although Mr Terrific might be the best part of the movie.

It's greatest weakness is it's writing. Nothing egregious personally, but I thought they could have had something truly inspiring and thought provoking, but it kinda just landed on being fun. Speaking of, there's a smidge of truth to the movie having too many jokes. There's a bunch of jokes that just don't land, or aren't funny enough to justify their existence.

I doubt you're gonna hate this. Maybe not be in love with it, but no hatred.

Most of Gunn's humor seems to land for me.So I'll have to wait and see when I actually see the movie. I would say, the worst it ever got for me was in Lollipop Chainsaw. I don't hate everything about it, but a lot of it has not aged well because it's just pop culture references that became dated the moment the game came out.

Oh I share your pain of superhero content. In fact, I'm pretty sure I skipped out on nearly all Marvel movies post-Endgame, Disney+ series, CW DC series, etc.

The movie benefits from the fact that it is set in its own universe, and has little to no ties to past DC contents; A clean state, if you will. And I think this is why Superman And Lois, and My Adventures With Superman worked so well, because they can tell their original story; Hell, Man Of Steel (2011) worked so well because it was also the beginning of a new universe and was a clean slate. Too bad most of the DECU failed hard....

Because of this, I think having low expectations might make you love the movie more!

Out of curiosity, how much Superman-related media have you been exposed to? Because that's gonna be another factor on how much you will love this movie; Everyone has a different version, or their idea of who Superman is, and I did hear someone groan and complain about "man, that superman was a wuss!" as I was walking out of the theater (resisted the urge to punch him, since that's how this Superman would've handled it).

When it comes to marvel stuff at this point, i've referred just reading comic books that are already done and have completed volumes in a collection. All I really care about is Daredevil, Shang-Chi, Ironheart (good show, and I still need to see it), Luke Cage, and the rest of the 2017 Defenders.

Though I've already learned early enough a long time ago, just to watch whatever i'm interested in, and that's it. Not what everybody else is watching or playing. I'm a big fan of My Adventures too. It's funny how DC always kills it or does great with most of their animated shows or movies. Marvel has a few good ones, but they never seem to go far or are forgotten about. All after the disney buyout. Moon Girl is freddie ray from what I hear. I still have to watch that one too. I'm also a fan of Invincible.

My exposure to most things Superman have been superficial at best. I watched the movies from the '70s and '80s as a kid, and they left very little impact save for being entertaining spectacle. I never read any of the comics or followed any of the myriad storylines (though when I was a comic collector back in the early-mid '90s, my dad did stand in line to net me a couple issues of the comic where Superman was killed, so I own a couple of comics, but they're still sealed, so never read them.) I watched he first reboot film from the early 2010s, but the only thing I remember from that was my complete incredulousness at the scene with the dramatic, slow-mo close up of a bullet hitting Superman's open eye and shattering to bits without him so much as blinking.

I have never cared much for Superman. I know it's not unique to his character, but he just always has felt overly able with such a niche weakness as to be basically negligible save for the various McGuffins writers have dropped in the hands of marginally capable villains to level the conflict in barely nominal ways. I will watch Superman for the spectacle; this is one for the theaters because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be arsed to watch it at home where I'd just crank up my TV's volume to try and replicate the theater experience. I normally say I "turn my brain off" for movies like this, but in this case, I might just leave my brain at home.

The jokes I had a problem with were already shown off in trailers, so at least I already got to see the worst. In general, I would say the jokes landed. I genuinely laughed out loud at parts. I just feel like the few bad bits could have been easily avoided, especially given how tired people are of quippy MCU moments.

Great for me; I only saw the two trailers with little jokes. So nothing is spoiled.

especially given how tired people are of quippy MCU moments.
Honestly, the hatred for "MCU dialouge/quips" is way overblown, and people who usually say that (not you in this case) is catch all insult term that means nothing. And is usually used by people who can't describe why they dislike something, so they use the MCU as a punching bag to get their point across, even when it's a movie not even doing MCU humor, and labeling it as such just for street cred, clout, and to sound smart. As we've seen, not even games are safe from this dumb criticism on things that don't apply at all.

I will decide for myself, but humor and superhero quips have been around way before the MCU was even thing. And some people seem to forget this, or act as if anything that came before was all pure platinum with no flaws. There was good material out there, with a lot of shit as well. Humor I am not even worried about, and going in with a more than open mind.
