The Drama

A young couple about to get married go wine sampling with the best man and maid of honor, get a little tipsy and play a game where each confesses what's the worst thing they've ever done. It's all fun and games until it's the bride's turn. Suffice to say the scandalous confession isn't even about something she did, but thought of doing. The rest of the movie is dealing with the fallout of the reveal as the wedding day approaches, mostly from the groom's perspective. It's dark, soapy and very funny. It's also really not that big of a deal? But it's fun to see bougies squirm and try sweep stuff under the rug. Zendaya is very good, even if her characters always seem to be coded in reproach and tethered to a husband or boyfriend, while Pattinson more or less steals the movie as someone who's desperately trying to fake his way out of increasing discomfort while making things much, much worse for himself and others. I gasped, I cringed, I burst out in laughter. You go, Glen Coco.

Balls Up

In 2018 Peter Farrelly successfully baited the Oscars with a sappy period piece about race relations. Now he's made a movie where a fish swims up a stream of piss, lodges itself into Mark Wahlberg's exposed meatus and Paul Walter Hauser must pry it out with his teeth. I mention that because 1) it aptly conveys just how crass Balls Up is, and 2) because it was the only moment that made me laugh. The rest of the movie tries and tries but, much like the fish furiously burrowing up Marky Mark's pee hole, it flops to no avail.

Thrash

Shark movie. A town gets flooded during a hurricane and subsequently infested with bull sharks when a sixteen wheeler gets sliced open by a statue's sword and spills 100 tons of chum (fuck!). It's a Simpsons worthy gag that sadly the movie can't or won't follow, because the rest of it is quite dull. Most of the deaths happen during the initial outbreak, and then for the rest of the movie we're left with a pregnant lady, a girl who misses her mom and three cherubic orphans, all of whom I'm sure will be fine, so I didn't finish the movie.

Had another one of my bad movie nights (ow my head), and we knocked two big ones off the list:

Birdemic: Shock and Terror, 9/10

I'd been putting this one off for a long time, because the impression I'd gotten was that instead of laugh out loud funny it would be just cringy, boring and awkward. Oh how wrong I was! It was an absolute riot, with glorious 2010 digital camera quality, hokiest of hokey special effects, and acting that reminded many of my friends of language teaching videos. There's tons of shocking and terrifying bird action, and we laughed pretty much all the way through. Top-tier movie to watch drunk with friends.

Troll 2 (1990), 6/10

This is one of the big ones of bad movie-dom, but I feel the subculture has been blessed with so many modern gems since this one's release that its status may have dimmed somewhat. For large chunks of it it's not really that much worse than your average bad movie from the late 80s, and some of it even works kind of. Not that there's no entertainment value to be had: there's some riotous "overdosed on acting pills" performances to be found and the production values are hilariously low. It's just that most of the movie is either average or boring. I did enjoy myself overall, but if you're looking for bad movies to enjoy with friends, there are way better ones to be recommended.

Balls Up: Dumb / Geat

Two employees of a contraceptive manufacturer market a condom that covers the shaft AND balls for the World Cup In Brazil. The pitch goes well, until their marketing efforts cause a scandal that finds them both unemployed. Nevertheless, the promise of tickets to the World Cup in Brazil come through, and their drunken interference with the game leads them to become pariahs throughout Brazil with the entire nation calling for their death. The race is on to get out of Brazil with their lives.

Really dumb movie that only glances off of the humor it reaches for most of the time. I got a particular kick out of watching Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser trying to swallow penis and balls-shaped condoms filled with cocaine, but outside of that, pretty much nothing lands. It wants to be like The Hangover, Due Date, or any of the raunchy comedies of late that put everyday guys in absurdly ridiculous situations, but it fails in a really pathetic try-hard way. Amusing, but not funny.

Also, how many condoms can a small fanny pack actually hold?

Not recommended, but if it happens to play out in front of your eyes, there are worse wastes of time... not many, but certainly worse.

Tagline to get you to read my thoughts: Prince's Boy

Thoughts: OK Matthew Vaughn makes stylish movies often with comedy / quirky bits that are almost great for posting stylish flashy cool looking clips on social media and Kingsman The Secret Service was his big hit into the mainstream consciousness (compared to Kick Ass which I see as the equivalent of James Guns Troma era ad despite loving the film I didn't even know he directed Stardust) and don't like my 6/10 fool you, you will walk away from this movie having enjoyed it. The issue is the film is a lot of style being used here is having to do a lot of the heavy lifting to disguise a pretty wafer thin story which doesn't really get to explore the themes it sets up overly well.

The basic plot, fairly successful spy fiction writer ends up becoming the target of a spy organisation while another tries to protect her when it's revealed her stories are based on real missions and events and the current book is about a still ongoing mission complete with missing secret information. The only problem is Ellie has got writers block and is struggling to write the rest of the story, now very much not being helped by being on the run with a Spy while another spy organisation tries to capture her.

Theme wise it sort of struggles with the main theme it ends up hitting upon then not really going anywhere is the difference between fiction and reality with Ellie's suave sophisticated Henry Cavill (doing his very best pitch to be the new James Bond) as Argylle being contrasted with Sam Rockwell as Aiden the spy who is kind of shorter and seems to be having to improvise and just make it through stuff rather than being fully in control and confident and also slightly slovenly / in possession of some bad habits etc. The thing being the film doesn't really do much with this other than having Ellie seeing Argylle appear in place of Aiden sometimes and we see how she perceives the events as going often quickly switching back to the reality of Aiden not actually being in full control of the situation.

The problem with talking about this film even down to themes is the big twist which I won't spoil here but it doesn't feel like it fits in as a theme or the theming or it works fine from a narrative perspective but it feels like half way through the second Kingsman film finding out a certain character survived only the film starts part way through
his recovery.

You won't have a bad time, the acting is fine and Cavill and Cena do a great job playing over the top characters to the point of touching parody but this one feels like it lacks a lot of the deeper meaning that has made Vaughn's other movies memorable.

Nobody 2

The merely adequate sequel to Nobody, which featured Bob Odenkirk as an everyman schlub who turns out to be a hitman/secret badass. In Nobody 2 he takes his family to a Midwestern amusement park for a quick, cheap holiday and within a day runs afoul with the local bad guys, a truly bizarre lineup comprised of Tom Hanks' kid (the good one) as a crooked sheriff and Sharon Stone as a psycho mobster. Then it's business as usual, but with diminishing returns. Amusement parks are always a welcome setting for your action movie climax, especially if they're rigged ala Home Alone (landmines in the ballpit! Spikes down the water slide!), I just don't find Odenkirk particularly likable in the part, and his family guy schtick isn't very funny or compelling. Dad should be the one desperately trying (and failing) to get his wife's approval and the kids excited or impressed; instead Odenkirk just plays him with a monotonously miserable energy while everyone around him has fun. That energy bleeds over most of the set-pieces and kills any tension.
