Disney is now remaking all their previous big hitters in a 3D version of itself... and it's making loads of money. I get it from their point of view (Money = power = good) but I do not get it from the viewers perspective. Pay 3D price to see a movie most people have seen or at least own already. The 3D add-on is an obvious gimmick, yet people jump on it like crazy. I would maybe expect some people to see it with their kids that might not have seen it, but $17,8 M in box office?

Am I the only one baffled by this?

3D is popular at the moment. Popular in this case meaning that people will pay to see almost anything in 3D. Releasing something that people know they like, and giving it to them in a way that they haven't previously experienced (3D) means that people will pay to see it.

Remember that it's not just the movie, but the experience that goes around with it. Seeing it in theaters with either (1) people who already love it or (2) newcomers you get to watch experience it for the first time is almost as enjoyable as the movie itself.

That's how I see it.

I'm surprised it was this successful, I thought the general public hated 3D?

My issue is these movies were never intended to be seen in 3D. Any attempts to turn a 2D source into 3D usually ends up looking like a diorama, and it done purely so they can charge people proper 3D tickets, for crappy half-assed fake 3D. No wonder the general public hates 3D.

Are they actually going to keep doing this? 'cause I wouldn't be surprised if they did but we can't jump to conclusions.

I saw the Lion King when they released it in 3D, but I didn't go and see it because it was in 3D. I went and saw it because it was a good movie and I wanted to see it on the big screen again. I have no intention of seeing Beauty and the Beast 3D or Titanic 3D or Star Wars: Episode 1 3D.

If studios rerelease exceptional movies then I'll go see them again for the big screen/surround sound experience, but generally I feel 3D is a gimmick.

I believe they've already stated that after Beauty & The Beast they plan to release The Little Mermaid in 3D as well.

The good news is that they also released a 2D version of Beauty & The Beast. Considering I don't remember seeing it on the big screen at the age of 5 it was nice to go and see it as such. If that's any indication they'll also release the other films with a 2D print as well.

Fingers crossed they re-release The Great Mouse Detective, it's easily one of my favorites and I'd love to see it on the big screen.

I think for the most part people don't generally like things converted into 3D when they are lazy about it. When a movie is done well in 3D, I have been told that it should be seen in 3D otherwise you lose some of the experience. Examples of "good 3D" are few and far between to be honest.

That being said, I think Disney would actually take care of their "classics" when they are re-released into theaters. I haven't actually seen Lion King or Beauty and the Beast in 3D but from what I heard they actually did things to make the 3D look good...but then again I am not really qualified to really say so. As much as I may not agree with everything Disney does or put out, but I can generally say everything that Disney does, they tend to do really well.

I paid good money to see the 3D re-releases of both The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast not because they were in 3D (the 3D was of questionable quality anyway), but because they are Beauty and the Beast and THE FRIGGIN LION KING, two of the best animated movies ever made. Being able to have the experience of seeing these two (and the upcoming Finding Nemo re-release) in theaters again is something that I would gladly pay for.

This is pretty even-handed.

I've had a few Disney 3D blurays from Lovefilm, and you're right, they're of a consistently high quality. Plenty of examples of bad 3D out there, but Disney aren't the perpetrators. When it's done so well, you kinda forget that you're watching 3D, and the film and overall experience benefit from it.

I don't like 3D but at least in my case it's seeing movies that I didn't see in a theater when I was younger in a theater or seeing a movie I did see and feeling like a wee little kid again.

The Little Mermaid is my favorite movie. I will happily go see it in 3D, even if the 3D doesn't really add anything (as was the case with Beauty and the Beast).

As to why we see it? The answer is simple. Nothing compares to seeing a movie on the big screen. Yes, 3D is a gimmick, and ads very little to the movie. But the Disney movies are so immersive that I'll fork over the extra if that's what it takes to get movies I love on the big screen again.

I saw beauty and the beast 3d.

I didn't give a damn about the 3d.

It was beauty and the beast. On big screen.

I didn't get to see it originally in theater, so I had to go.

I'll go see little mermaid too.

I don't really care about the 3D part in re-releases, it's all about the film itself. I will go to watch X Disney movie because it's that X Disney movie, not because it's 3D.
