Well, there goes the Expanded Universe.

On one hand, Star Wars 7. On the other hand, what will it be about?

If it is the Thrawn Trilogy, all is forgiven, but since it won't be, I'm terrified.
Hey hey hey, the Yuuzhan Vong saga would be awesome too! Honestly though, I doubt they will do anything that they would have to bring back the original cast for. Because of that, they will probably do something in the future, after the Luke and friends have died, which leaves that movies ripe with possibilities.

OT: Kind of nervous, kind of excited, and very curious. I can't wait to see what the new film series will be about. It honestly could go either way at this point. Very interesting times for the Star Wars universe ahead, I gotta say. :p
On the other hand, who says they have to bring back the original cast? The prequels made do with replacement actors. Ewan McGregor is more Obi Wan in the popular consciousness now than Sir Alec Guiness is.
There is a difference, methinks, between getting a new actor to play a younger version of a character and new one to play an older version...

When I saw this reported on BBC news I was like "Lol wut?!"

I'm tentatively pleased to hear this, as I do love Star Wars and so a new trilogy would hopefully be good if they don't muck it up... please be good. I'm guessing it would be set some time after episode VI. Also Battlefront III NAOW!

For everyone thinking this may be a good thing, I have two words of caution for you:

Tron: Legacy

Look at how Disney handled the resurrection of one of their own tent-pole sci-fi franchises. I.E. throwing more money than the GDPs of some nations at advertising, marketing, and product franchising; all the while spending little to no effort or attention towards the actual quality of the film project.

Yeah, I don't know. For some reason, I don't foresee good things from this merger/buyout.

I guess you could say: I feel a disturbance...

[sub]Not that Lucas was doing much good with the franchise anyway. But then, I was never really THAT big a fan of Star Wars to begin with.[/sub]
Not like the og tron was high art or brainy or anything.

Still lucas could not do much worse than epi 1 2 and 3, so any transition from the all mighty lucas with all consuming greed surrounded by yes people 24/7 is a good thing.

even if they disneyfy it it would still have more heart and character than the first 3 films put together.

but disney also has pixar under them, so it seems to more depend on the property studio that is working for disney, does pixar prosper because they are managed well by disney? or do they prosper because disney gives them a free hand?

disney has consistently made good and bad films over the years, their pure film production co seems to lack any real vision or great talent outside of pixar itself, maybe with the people coming over to oversee the license, with lucas having some outside say, we can get some good films, games and etc made because we know in the last 15 or so years any good star wars games have been few and far between, remember when lucasarts made games that people could not wait to play?

the og films got redeited and changed in silly ways just so lucas could put out 20 different editions to sell to people, the new films are absolute garbage, so i have a hard time seeing where less lucas and more of other people could possibly make stuff worse, no matter what hollywood mega corp ended up with it.

I wonder if we're about to get to a point where there are more Star Wars films rejected from the canon (by fans) than included in it...

Idk, I kinda like that Disney got LucasArts. I mean, take Marvel for example, ever since Disney bought them we got awesome shit like the IronMan movies or the Avengers. miteBcool.

So, can we get over this childish, hyperbolic villainization of George Lucas now?

I'd like to see his relationship with fans repaired once all the dust settles.

We might actually get a decent movie if Lucas is not the one directing. Its a good thing and a bad thing at the same time, disney let marvel get on with stuff pretty much so hopefully they do the same with star wars and it actually becomes good again.

Well, we can thank Disney for Pirates of the Carribean, and the Avengers, so....

It's not like Old George has been that great with the franchise lately.

Maybe this will actually be for the best.

Was my initial reaction.

Now I wait and see, but I am not looking forward to seeing Star Wars pander (even?) more to children.

OT: im wondering how they plan to do a movie will the old cast return?
doubtful, they are all really getting on in years. Not to say that old people can't make good movies (see RED), but still.

color me cautiously optimistic. this could be very very good or very very bad

either way, i still have the original vhs tapes of the original triology, after the first digital re-mastering, but before any major tampering. ima make dvds of em too, and make copies of those.

Never gonna let the original movies fade away. NEVER

Just so long as they don't touch any of the original films and make changes to previous lore (Except for destroying Jar Jar Binks). I hope they'll handle this franchise intelligently and not bollox it up. They mustn't fail, the consequences are to severe to do so!

You don't want to know what happened the last time someone failed. (Force chocked).

all he has to do is un-do his many ret-cons, then BAM! public relations solved.

seriously, who the hell thought it was a good idea to retcon the mandalorians into pacifists!?!?!?!? i mean really!

What Disney is doing with Marvel actually makes me hopeful here. Not just the Avengers, but the long running story line mentality they showed building up to it and going forward.

Wait, they get LucasArts as well? Does this give more hope to the likes of Battlefront 3 or am I just an idiot?
Battlefront 3 works into that bloodless combat thing that Disney has been doing in its games. I mean they bring it back Give it press and it turns out to be good? thats a FPS competitor with CoD... Also the Resources to make actual X-wing/TIE fighter remakes? That is being a hopeful optimistic Idiot. which i am...

I am sick to death of this obsession with star wars. I washed my hands of the franchise years ago.

Well that was unexpected.

I imagine they can't make a film that would be any worst than EP 1 and 2 (only saw 10 mins of Ep.3 no idea how it is). But then a new film could be just as bad as them.

On the gaming side of this if could mean that we may finally see Lucasarts games appear on GOG.com and maybe a return of the Battlefront series.

So Lucas raped his own franchise... now there'll be princesses raping it too.
