This feels a bit sacrilegious. There's no way they can make it better. The Lion King is by far the best Disney animated movie as far as I'm concerned. It's an instant classic.
No Fantasia and if we are judging by the Renissance alone The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Nup, it's Zootopia. Though as far as the Renaissance goes, I'd nominate Lion King.

I wonder how this movie is going to effect their Lion Guard: Friendship is Magic cartoon.
I have a feeling not at all.
Think about it - if the remake has the exact same storyline as the original film, how does that prevent any other element of the Lion King canon be kept in sync with it?

See, this is what continues to blow my mind. This notion that 2D doesn't sell seems to only come from Disney themselves. Everywhere I've gone, people talk about how much they loved the classic 2D films and would love to see that style come back. At the same time, Princess and the Frog sold very well, but just not as much as they wanted. If they can't have it all, then they won't have it AT all, apparently. I really hope this trend ends soon. At least Europe is willing to take those kind of risks.
Actually, DreamWorks reached the same conclusion even earlier. Also, it would be very interesting to know the age range of those people - I certainly don't see anyone hankering for black and white or silent movies nowadays, but we're still at a period of time where people who grew up with those films can have nostalgic feelings, along with the means to vent them.
I don't doubt that there's some people who genuinely prefer one style over another, but a good piece of visual media is a good piece of visual media, dependent on elements like story, themes, storytelling, characters, etc. Making the Lion King 3D instead of 2D, but otherwise the same, wouldn't make it any better or worse in terms of those elements. So, honestly, I don't care how Disney or any other company animates their works, just make the works good. True, I've given props to KFP3 and Peanuts this year for their animation, but my overall evaluation of those movies wasn't dependent on it.
