Either way if it doesn't have James Earl Jones' voicing Mufasa it's doomed, you cannot re-cast James Earl Jones, it's simply not possible.
Morgan Freeman or Ron Perlman could work.
I really don't want Disney to abuse the memory of what was a brilliant movie......

.....BUUUUUT I'd totally pay some form of currency equivalent to hear Morgan Freeman as Mufasa.

Is the main Disney company ashamed of their roots as an animation studio?
They aren't, however 2D animated films don't sell in the US anymore and they stand to make more money on a completely 3D animated version, rather than a digital remaster (which they've already done). For some reason being 3D and "realistic" in the US somehow makes this stuff socially acceptable for adults to enjoy. Just look at the popularity of the Transformers movies. A lot of the adults watching those films wouldn't be caught dead watching the cartoon, because cartoons are for kids.

Disney still supports 2D animation, they have several, well done, 2D animated TV shows (Gravity Falls, Wander over Yander, Star vs the Forces of Evil) and they localize all the Studio Ghibli films, they just... don't believe in it for they own feature films. Princess and the Frog was their last hurrah.
See, this is what continues to blow my mind. This notion that 2D doesn't sell seems to only come from Disney themselves. Everywhere I've gone, people talk about how much they loved the classic 2D films and would love to see that style come back. At the same time, Princess and the Frog sold very well, but just not as much as they wanted. If they can't have it all, then they won't have it AT all, apparently. I really hope this trend ends soon. At least Europe is willing to take those kind of risks.
Its largely because that talk isn't translating into ticket sales. Also if I'm honest Princess and the Frog was kind of shit, and with CGI its also, as I understand it, a lot easier to adjust the movie on the fly (as it were) than it is with 2D cell-based animation. Then again, since even 2D can be done digitally I'm curious if that's still the case.

This feels a bit sacrilegious. There's no way they can make it better. The Lion King is by far the best Disney animated movie as far as I'm concerned. It's an instant classic.
No Fantasia and if we are judging by the Renissance alone The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Nup, it's Zootopia. Though as far as the Renaissance goes, I'd nominate Lion King.

I wonder how this movie is going to effect their Lion Guard: Friendship is Magic cartoon.
I have a feeling not at all.

Think about it - if the remake has the exact same storyline as the original film, how does that prevent any other element of the Lion King canon be kept in sync with it?

Actually, DreamWorks reached the same conclusion even earlier. Also, it would be very interesting to know the age range of those people - I certainly don't see anyone hankering for black and white or silent movies nowadays, but we're still at a period of time where people who grew up with those films can have nostalgic feelings, along with the means to vent them.

I don't doubt that there's some people who genuinely prefer one style over another, but a good piece of visual media is a good piece of visual media, dependent on elements like story, themes, storytelling, characters, etc. Making the Lion King 3D instead of 2D, but otherwise the same, wouldn't make it any better or worse in terms of those elements. So, honestly, I don't care how Disney or any other company animates their works, just make the works good. True, I've given props to KFP3 and Peanuts this year for their animation, but my overall evaluation of those movies wasn't dependent on it.

Apparently, nobody at Disney has a heart, because everyone knows that this movie tugs at the heartstrings so bad, aa is.

This is an entirely pointless action. Re-releasing the original into theaters would make more money AND be cheaper.

I am sorry but Zootopia just looks....generic, its like the Ultimate generic movie. Oh look anthropomorphized animal people, have not seen that before :p

I rather watch Looney Tunes.

"Oh but it has Morals, and a message about Race, and a good heart" shit I have already seen many times before in my childhood cartoons.

Judge not, till thou hast seen, young padawan. Things are often not as bad as you'd have yourself imagine. It is easy to assume negatives, i mean, isn't that what the escapist community's currency is?

I have watched Cinemasins video on it and was unimpressed. And Cinemasins practically shows whole movies on the internet for free.

I don't know if I need a bigger palm or a bigger face for this. Seriously. Has DIsney hit the bottom of the creativity barrel that they must now reboot their own films. Come on, there are still like a dozen Hans Christian anderson stories y'all haven't touched. Maybe a few Grimms fairytale. I mean I get it, you're looking for something witha Princess. Well how about the Princess and the pea. Seriously Got the word princess right in the title..
