After watching the latest episode of Community, where the group plays a game of Dungeons and Dragons with a person they think is suicidal in order to save his life, I really wanted to try playing. I'm slowly making my way through the player handbook, and I was wondering if any Escapists had any tips for me.

I'd stay away from spellcasters until you're comfortable with playing the basic game. It really depends on how good your DM is, though.

EDIT: Also, what edition?

Check to make sure if your DM is a sadist or not. If not just do what seems fun. If not pack everything you could ever possibly need including 10 foot poles 50 feet of rope and thieves tools. Also if your party is not rigidly enforced to the standard : Tank,Healer,Rogue,Caster, Specifications you will get your ass handed to you. But besides those DM's ( Though the game can be very rewarding that way ) It's a very fun game especially if you get into the roleplaying and character development.

EDIT: Damn forgot the joke. Don't worry. It's okay to be curious about these things when your young sweetie.

Just wanted to point out that the show got absolutely nothing right about D&D. Well D20s sure, but everything else is hogwash.
Just find a local group and just watch for a game or two and then jump in, or find various 1 shot games that happen occasionally.
Also listen to Penny Arcade's D&D podcasts, it will get you familiar with the interactions between a DM and players and various terminology and how the game generally works and progresses.
