Obviously deep thought here...

I think that isnt the reason they are dropping by to say hi.

I dont think they would have spent ages looking at us, to eventualy not see us cause they think well be mean to them.

Is the reason aliens have never made contact with us because they think we would discriminate against them???
I think that if aliens had the technology to come here and say hello, what we really need to be worried about is them discriminating against us. They'll be all like "damn stupid humans, they're all the same" and herd us like cattle into their ships to make tasty alien snacks.

Well, as District 9 shows us, we are only truly racist to beings that are outside our genus entirely (think fantasy Races - all human skin colors are representative of one category of creature).

Therefore, any Aliens aware of us (humans) would likely anticipate an alarmed reaction at the least before initiating contact. Or they might just virus-bomb us and harvest our plastic. It's Crude Squared!

Aliens haven't made contact because the nearest star to ours is roughly four light years away and it doesn't have any planets.

I'm one of the first to vouch for there being life elsewhere in the universe, but I also think that the possibility of us ever crossing paths is about as likely as an elephant spontaneously appearing on the moon (which, for the record, is still a non-zero chance).

Silly human, we don't beleive that. We are just assimilating into your culture for the time being by breeding with the physically fit and bursting out of their cest/bellies. THen, when all the good looking folks are dead, all that will be left IS THE PITIFUL GAMERS AND THE PEOPLE THAT THINK THAT THEY ARE HOT but they aren't AND WE CAN RULE THIS PITIFUL MUD BALL FROM THE INSIDE OUT! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!

Or so I've been told. We lost contact in the Regan years. Something about Star Wars and satelite nukes...

I have a theory:
Aliens have observed us and found us to be to unpredictable in the long run of things, so they avoid making contact until we get our shit together (from their prespective).

Yeah, I doubt any aliens we would meet would be similar enough to us to give a shit about our petty emotions and values. They'd probably have crazy emotions and values we don't understand.

Racism is just thinking that there are wide differences in general human types when really there aren't any. Maybe in alien culture there ARE wide differences and they think that typological thinking in that manner is the best thing! Maybe aliens are all racist! Or maybe not! It's stupid to guess about aliens because you're almost sure to be wrong!

Point: we'd need some Xenopsychologists.

Or maybe the aliens haven't got here, and are in-fact nowhere near here.
If they're anything like humans they'd probably go "oh, cool" if they found a planet with life on it, rather than hiding behind the moon or something and waiting for humanity to attain "inner peace" or some crap.

Chances are they'd still steal some humans and other animals so they have something to show for this expedition.
I don't think aliens would be the bringers-of-ancient-wisdom kind, since technological advancement would call for some simple curiosity, and if they didn't wonder what was out there, then why bother with space travel?

Chances are that they'd still be far more advanced than us, since they got the hang of intergalactic space travel before us.

Well, while I do find the existence of aliens likely, they aren't necessarily smarter than us and more technologically advanced. Even if someone has caught Earth's signals, they might not have a telescope good enough to watch us so closely they can say anything for sure about our society. Even if they did have a way to study us, I think they'd only been confused by it considering the variations between different cultures and also different subcultures. If aliens have studied Earth and decided not to contact it, I doubt the video game industry is doing much to help their impression on us. I mean, in almost every space game, all aliens are bad simply because they are aliens, so yeah, we're sending out a racist vibe. If I was an alien, I sure would think twice about contacting planet Earth.

There are easier explanations too. Let's say the aliens simply aren't adventurous by nature. I mean, I'm sure humans would explore other inhabitant planets if we could, but maybe the aliens just looked at Earth and found nothing worth trading for and then just thought "let's just leave those guys alone".

Yes, you fools kill each other over petty differances all the time, we at one time were debating on destroying your entire species. There is no way we are going to land on your powder-keg of a planet to make first contact, less we light the fuse of racial tensions.

Strange alien wierdness out of the way, they probably don't want to assosiate with us just yet. We can't stop killing ourselves over religion, beliefs, skin color, etc, etc, etc the list goes on. That's probably why they won't bother contacting us.

Well, we're most certainly Speciesists, considering that we don't grant animals the same rights as we do a permanently comatose human whose higher brain functions ("personality", self-consiousness) are gone for good.

That a large portion of humanity are also discriminating/killing members of our own species for even more ridiculous reasons such as race and the delusions of religions doesn't help either.

If they've seen any of our mainstream sci-fi, most definatly. I mean, if we ever meet alien life, Star Trek, Star Wars and its ilk will just be an embarrasment. "Oh look, there's the greedy merchant race, the logical race, the angry warlike race, and there's humanity, capable of all of the above because ther'ye just so fuckin superior. Granted, decent sci-fi by the likes of Brunner or K.Dick is nothing like this, but the most popular stuff is.
