Do american accents sound weird to non americans?

NEVER EVER COMPARE US TO PARIS HILTON!lol Also this tread is to obvious. American accents don't sound weird to non-Americans...they sound weird to non-Americans and other Americans. A southern "cowboy" accent is weird. Also "gangster" accents and "gangster talk" is just annoying.Clashero said:
However, in all seriousness. There are many different accents in America, due to different regions to the fact that many Americans are from other countries and backgrounds. I wouldn't know what a generic American accent is, and even if I did know, I wouldn't doubt one bit that others would find is strange and weird. (I wanted to say "purcalur" but I can't spell it.
Nice topic by the way, and I'm from America, living in Philadelphia. (Philadelphia is also suppose to have a specific accent).

According to a girl I met from Toronto last summer, even I have an "American" accent, and I live mere hours away from her.
The thing about American accents is we hear them all the time but so you don't even notice it on TV, but when you hear an American accent in real life it can be quite jarring, it's like "oh, there are real people who talk like that". As for the regional differences, they're noticeable but they all sound American.
Not really, not for me anyway, American accents have the worst of both worlds in that they're not exotic because you hear them all the time anyway but they're not familiar either. I think the 'nasally' quality of American accents is often perceived as annoying by non-Americans.puppydogvaan said:

Now Scottish accents are a real nightmare.
There's intelligent accents for every country just the same as there are yokel accents for every country. I find the intelligent ones exotic and sexy if foreign and of the opposite sex, no matter whether they're American or German or English, from anywhere really.
At the same time I find accents that convey little intelligence, i.e. when it comes to the point where invented words are used instead of actual English words, and it sounds like the person has been around drunk people their entire life. But I never assume intellectual superiority over a person just based on accent. It's the words they say that determine such things, even if those words are somewhat reliant on the accent.
