Pffft, religion. Anything that doesn't have a soul is either a zombie or a demon, I see more humans without souls than animals!

Either animals have them or don't. And I do NOT care what anyone says. Humans = animals that evolved into sentience. Let's just say, oh, dolphins evolve a tiny bit. Not much, just enough to enable speech and comprehension. Would we suddenly label them as 'creatures with souls'? No. It's all or nothing. Deal with it. Got a problem? Blame science. It works.

Souls don't exist, we simply have evolved things like a conscience because we have an adequate number of neural pathways to reach the level of consciousness we see in our race, animals don't because they dont have the brain power to understand things as fully as we do, and so live simpler existences.

And that is why they work for us and become our food.

I can't imagine anyone who has spent a lot of time with animals not thinking they had souls. I define a soul as what makes us who we are (maybe that's not everyone elses definition, but I'm sticking with it). All animals I've ever dealt with have had their own individual personalities, so yes I believe they each have a soul.
I like your definition and I concur. What I believe as "God", "soul" etc. isn't a mainstream secular view, but I'm not gonna go into my confusing and ever evolving belief system, I'll try to stick to the question. Although this really makes me feel guilty eating fish and fowl. Every living thing has a spark of the divine, and I guess that includes plants, and we've got to eat, and the circle of life thing will keep rolling, so I guess that makes up for it. *dizzy, having gone full circle in argument* @_@

well we evolved from animals and there is a link between us so yes we have a soul just like self awareness and a need to communicate and all the gooey stuff we need to survive

In my religion class my teacher was talking to the class about how humans are speicial and how animals are insignificant creature just there so we can have a large menu to choose from. So i spent about half an hour argueing with him. His primary argument was that animals dont have souls and god only gave souls to humans.

Just to be clear I dont want this topic to end up a debate on religion vs atheism i just want to know your opinion on if animals have souls.
*Sigh* I dont like posting on these threads because I always get flamed, but here I go anyway.

Your teacher is probably a christian, correct? In that case, argueing from his stand point, the Bible teaches that man was made unique and in Gods image. Normally thats taken to mean he made us in 3 parts, body, mind, and soul. and since were the only ones created in such a manner, we are the only ones with souls. Thus we are different than animals.

Again this is according to Christian doctrine.
*Not that it matters, Im still probably gonna get flamed.

I belive in a materialist world. We are the result of cells regrouping together to form a bigger and more complex organism. We human are special because our brain is more developed then the others animals on earth. Thats all.

The idea of souls was made to help to understand life during the first time of aged. A simple concept just like the earth is the center of the universe and the sun, the moon and the stars turn around it. So as much as this idea is old and no longer acceptable, so is the idea of a soul. So humans dont have souls, animals neither.

We accepted more easely the fact that the earth turn around the sun rather then the opposite because, frankly, we have proof but most important, we dont care a shit. But if we have no souls, no heaven, no life after dead??!! Life as no meaning?

I dont pretend knowing those anwswer and nobody should. It doesnt mean that if we dont know something, we never will. But when you think you know something, always ask yourself, why do we belive that is the true?

Why do I belive the sun turn around the earth, because I see it moving in the sky
Why do I belive the earth turn around the sun, because we used telescope and satellite etc.
Why do I belive I have a soul, why do I belive there is a good? Because my parents tought me so...? but why^

This does look like a bash against religion but i cant just say, no, animals dont have souls and humans too.

Dear god this will just end like all religion based threads on this damn forum.

And on topic, I never thought about it but if it is believed that we have souls then I wouldn't see why animals wouldn't do.

And by the way.

I wouldn't believe anything a religious teacher says.

Hell, I still am debating with myself wheather most humans have souls.

But I believe that anything that lives has a soul, even if it doesn't realise it.

Animals don't need any reassurance that death is not a good thing; they don't make up 10,000 instances of a concept to comfort themselves.

Humans are technically animals, and there is absolutely nothing about us that makes us special. Also, souls are hard to define, but I think that any sentient animal (IE anything capable of thought) would have a soul. The thought that humans are supposed to rule the earth is really just human narcissism spread to religion.

I agree. I have three cats and their personalities and manerisms are so different, for me to think they don't have souls would be madness.

I don't think a soul, or anything like it, exists. However, animals are vital to our ecosystem and play a more important role in life than most people think. I don't think animals are just for eating, personally, I think it's wrong to eat animals, but they are most certainly not made to be eaten. Besides, as people earlier in the topic have said, humans are animals and if animals don't have souls, neither do humans.
