Bahamut isn't even really supposed to be a dragon, mythologically speaking. We'd probably see some more interesting things in fantasy games if people didn't keep making changes like that.
Yeah, Pegasus breathed fire and Medusa = a Gorgon and a Cockatrice = a Basilisk, etc etc. don't even get started on Manticores and Hippogriffs, there hasn't been a correct one in videogames since forever.
But by now these fantasy tropes have come to have a life of their own. It's like complaining about Starcraft and Warcraft being ripped off from Warhammer. Sure its true (and if you say they're not you need your head examined), but after fifteen years of development those fictional universes have as much right to exist as any other. Just like Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms sprang from Tolkien's world but have since become almost as detailed as their ancestor (aside from the language thing, that was just obsessive).
I wonder when Bahamut first became the Dragon God/King, bet it predates DnD by a couple of centuries. The Victorians muddled a lot of the old myths up pretty good.
Weird how the Sphinx never got messed up really.
