do men get pandered too, while women are patronized?

I laughed when I saw the pink guns!

I see an ad for a revolver called the "Pink Lady" in every issue of American Rifleman. And I saw the pink .22 rifle at the gun store I go to. Thought about getting it for my mom :p

From what I've seen, some women do want pink guns. They sell surprisingly well.

This is the truth. I'm a single, male SATCOM technician that lives in a quadplex. Yet, every time I go to a hardware store, or the pawn shop (HDMI cables never got so cheap), or any othe store that sells tools, I can't help but stare longingly at the saws.
I can't go by a hardware store without ogling the power tools. I want them in my life so bad.

There are differences between the sexes. People who are trying to sell something will adjust the product to fit the target demographic. It works. *shrug*

men frequently over-buy for their needs, we don't just want a drill, we want the most powerful goddamn drill in the store!
If it isn't attached to a giant mech, I don't want it.

When I misread that, it sounded totally awful. Hint: It rhymes with "life".

I'm just glad that men usually get better deals on products specifically aimed toward them. Men's deodorant is usually cheaper per oz. than women's. That really goes for most any sort of male-targeted hygiene product.

The only time I saw a subversion of this was a nail salon that charged (50%) more for men. I was like "wtf", you don't even have to paint them but you're charging more? Are they charging by surface area or something?

Haha. Took me a sec to figure out how it could have been misread then I laughed.

I'm just glad I didn't misspell it or have some kind of slip. That would have been awkward.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: IIRC, some of the earliest forms of plant (or plant like, can't remember) life used green light, reflected red and blue, and was therefore purple. If that had remained the dominant form of vegetation, military forces would be wearing various shades of purple, and pink guns wouldn't be out of place. But to answer the OP, yes.

I wouldnt be surprised if more men buy those guns then women do, probably as gifts under the assumption that getting their wifes, girlfriends, gay lovers a pink gun will make them like guns more

Going by my limited experience in watching people by pink guns or use them women were buying them for themselves or had bought them for themselves. But then I've only seen it happen a couple times so that could mean squat and your right.

Eh, most women like pink. I personally think pink is the epitome of all evil, but that's a minority opinion among vagina owners.

The bit with the diet pill within the Go Girl drink made me laugh.
also another thing, I think that ACTUALLY annoys me as apoased to the pink stuff

dont you think its kind of sad than ANYTHING food related and targeted towards women..assumes that ALL women want to lose weight? seriously after thinking about it weight loss is everywhere..body image issues arnt just around for yougn women..it follows you your whole life, ok yeah theres a line between being healthy and all that...but it just seems that in soceity so much of a womens life is devoted to losing weight

it made me wonder, if that drink had a "appetite supressant" or somthing like that, but I didnt know and was drinking away like anything (as I do) then mabye I could become malnourished because I dont eat enough? mabye a little extrmeme but still

Ive never understood why

compared to other colurs pink actually just doesnt look good, and often tackey, I mean it can, but only somtimes (like a metalic pink gun or Ipod...)

I did however used to think the same thing about purple...untill I played saints row 2

How is assuming we all like cars, fire and guns not condescending, whereas assuming all women like pink is?
I find most "cars, fire, guns" commercials aimded at guys to be fairly tongue-in-cheek. By contrast, I find commercials directed at women to be mostly straight-forward about the product.

It's an interesting topic because it's borderline sexism with presumptions about the gender... but it works.

If I were to target, oh I don't know, Batman The Dark Knight to a gender neutral audience, it might be the morally right thing to do, but smarter marketing towards a broader male audience sells better. I mean you know those trailers with the big explosions, the juxtaposition of sound levels and the excessive use of "MANLY" colours? It's not a coincidence they don't use that stuff for Eat Pray Love. It's because whether we like it or not, people lean towards stereotypes subconsciously. In a perfect world, this "women like pink" stuff would be outright misogynistic, but the fact that we still hold many ideas about masculine and feminine concepts in our heads proves that it's not patronising.

Let me give you the simplest of examples.

Mainstream skirts for males. Why not?

What's up with your gender and yogurt? Seriously, my TV would have me believe that 30% of what women eat is yogurt. Do women really need that much help being "regular"?

theres no reaosn why not..men have worn stuff similar to a skirt in the past..its all about trends and culture really, right now its just not common in our culture, like it wasnt common in roman culture for women to have power

in fact wasnt it back then..like early AD times pants were considered unmanley? but came into vouge because of horse back riding and cold wearther? I dont know...its interesting that pants didnt become acceptible for women for a much longer time (perhaps because they spend less time riding horeses and more time cooking)

I have no idea. I'm not a huge fan of yogurt either...Something about the texture grosses me out. I'll eat it frozen once in awhile.

If I had to toss a guess out, it would be because yogurt is hyped as uber-healthy with tons of benefits and women tend to be really concerned about shit like that.

well I would argue that while yeah talking from an advertising/media point of veiw the dark knight is definetly more apeal to males

but I would go out and say it pretty much IS made to apeal to a gender neutral audience, theres not a huge focus on boobs..mabye some explosions but its an action films, thats what you excpet

the main focus of the promotion is the joker, and with inception as well both movies pull is more "this is gonna blow your mind!" rather than "boobs! explosions!"

how else would you promote the dark knight? by focusing on the romance aspect? women arnt all totally shallow that they wont see somthing unless its a romantic comedey, the dark knight as alot of wise apeal and good reveiw going for it, regardless of gender somoen will see it if they want a really good thrilling blockbuster

now as opoased to say...inglorious basterds that was definetly promoted with males in mind, which is really interesting as it had some really kickass female charachters..but yeah I understand the reasoning behined it plus you have the name of Tarantino

anyway female movie goers like most people will go and see almost anything if its popular/good enough

Well at the risk of being gross, most women SHOULD eat yoghurt daily to keep their vaginal bacteria at the right balance. =D
Pink used to be a boys colour because it was closer to RED which was fierce and bold. Blue, being the more sombre was for females, so this is a 20th century issue. Im not sure if someone wants to correct me on this but its rumored it was changed to blue because of a famous woman dressing her daughter in pink and it became fashionable.

So really, boys should be the ones buying those grotesque pink ps2's. Its only the media and film that have bombarded us with stereotypes since the 50's.

Is it a milk thing? I've seen tons of milk and cheese adverts aimed at women, too.
I think I've got it:
"Milk brings sunshine to a land devastated by your period tears."

I love how she just sits there waiting for princes to come save her. Very forward, milk industry. I thought you guys had pills to stop you from having periods...

You know most women don't eat with their vaginas, right?
