Do Pokemon actually die?

Read the manga, they die all the time.
Especially in the first series

This also raises the question of ghost type pokemon. I mean, were they always that way or are they dead pokemon who came back as a different kind?

OT, yes they can. It's a bit obvious, when you think about it.
And never seeing wild Pokemon attack each other is summed up with the word 'censorship'.

Pokemon do die, I think it was mentioned in the series and the first 2 games. I can remember this one tower where all the dead pokemon were burried and their pokemasters were hanging around and crying and such.

Another question: Where does the referree for the fights even know when a pokemon cant fight anymore? Does he know when the eyes turn "x"s?
I mean think about it, so many times a pokemon lay on the ground after a fight, everybody thought it wouldnt stand up anymore. So why did the referree not quit the fight, it lays on the f*cking ground and cant move, whats the big deal? No, he has to wait for the "x"s to appear, clearly...

First off, the TV is very different from the games. Look at them as separate universes.

Yes, pokemon can die, evidence is cemetaries and Pokedex entries referencing their eating habits(other pokemon). In addition to this you can find some interesting info in a library in Diamond. Apparently, in the past, some guy went around with a sword killing pokemon. The pokemon didn't like that, which is why they attack people in the wild. To bond with pokemon again you need to catch and battle with them.

Well, something like that. You should go read that book(the virtual one)

Which is exactly why when you go into Lavender Tower and talk to the little girl, she's crying over her dead growlithe. And why you fight the ghost of a dead marowak (who is explicitly mentioned as having been killed by Team Rocket).

People go to the host tower to morn the dead pokemon, talk to some of the people there and you'll see what I mean

If your joke isn't funny, and is told with a totally straight tone besides, you can't call it a joke.

Not even mentioning that idea that you killed your rival's rattata in Red.

That's because it makes much more sense to assume that your rival simply left his weak, normal-type pokemon in the PC (he knows what that is, after all; he's spoken with Bill and he's captured far more than seven pokemon), traded out in favor of one he'd use in the long-term.

I figure every Pokemon that you beat in the wild, without capturing it, dies. I mean, nobody's going to be going around picking up every single injured Pokemon they can find and bringing them to a Pokemon Center, right?

It's obviously for Ghost Pokemon, and not Pokemon ghosts.

As for the OP: It's a kid's game. Pokemon die a Disney Death [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DisneyDeath], if at all. It's kinda unfortunate (as an adult), but hey, the games are targeted at kids.

There's even one who says, "Growlithe, why did you die?"
It doesn't get much more straightforward than that.

Better ansewer the legendary ones bound with elemental powers with the planet are like demi-gods pokemon they'll live eternally till there killed or possibly Asexual and die shortly after laying a single egg.

Normal ones? All that training pays off in keeping them ticking? I'm sure they could die if they stopped using thier special attacks and started targeting organs with the sharpest parts of thier bodys.

And while we are on the topic, some pokemon are said to have human like intelligence in addition to their attacks, why don't rebel and enslave humanity? Killing some small humans shouldn't be that much of a problem.

That tower is there for a reason, so are the gravestones and mourning Pokemon trainers in there.

Also read the original description of Charmander; if the flame on his tail goes out, he will die.

All I can say is, I'm glad that they don't actually die in the game (especially of old age or anything). Imagine spending HOURS to get a pokemon to level 100 just to have a message pop up saying "Charizard is getting too old to battle. Time to put him down! =)"

If you recall in Pokemon FireRed version, there was this monument in the Sevii islands, erected for some flighty broad's steelix. She gives you the TM for Facade if you placed a Lemonade on it.
Not to mention the many other Pokemon graveyards scattered around the various games.

I want to see a dark pokemon game where YOUR pokemon can die if you dont take care of them.

Someone really needs to make a Pokemon zombie movie... that would be awesome.

OT: I think a game where they could die would be an interesting idea, but when it comes down to it it would be one massive pain in the ass.

Lets say that you barely make it out of a battle in one piece, your level 70 Feraligatr or whatever (which was originally your starter pokemon) only has like 6HP left. You go into the long grass to take cover when some little crappy thing comes out hits it once and it dies. The pokemon you've had since the start of the game just dies. You would be pissed but at least it would be realistic right.
