Yea I guess if the only way to avoid being crushed to death by a speeding car is the press "x" then why not.

It's just that some times, their timing window is just too damn brief and too damn sudden. I liked RE: Umberlla Chronicles cause the screen would flash inverted colours at the beginning of a cutscene with a QTE.

Sure they work, if you want to destroy a large amount of immersion.
QTE's may never be miles away from the nearest checkpoint - that makes them arse.
They must also - if they must occure, and I'd prefer they didn't - be incredibly over the top and full of awesome. Only the rule of awesome will save the QTEs from just making you cry.
And of course, as many have said, it's better if they're consistent and not totally out of the blue.

I see them as rewards. You've played the game for quite some time, and after a while you just want to relax som. Along the way comes the quick time events, only requiering you to press a button every now and then and see dramatic awesome scenes as a reward.
They can work, and they can put an interesting spin on gaming to keep us on our toes so to speak. However when they're thrown in at random with and failing the QTE mean instant death, that can get quite irritating, and when I say 'irritating', I mean controller snapping frustrating.
The QTEs in 'Wet' work very well, as in they usually only come along when one movement is dramatically feasible to progress the story and/or stay alive, and then it's on with the action. And they are few and far between.
The problem is when games decide to use lots of QTEs in succession in order for them to carry out what would probably be an awe inspiring and bombastic action sequence but you can't actually see it because you're spending too much time staring at the bottom of the screen waiting for the next flash of 'Press X to not die'. I like them if they're well-implemented. God of War does QTEs well, but then I played 'Ninja Blade' on the X360 a few day ago... and it uses them even better.
This is actually one I'd like to see reviewed by Yahtzee during the next games drought, because as much as he hates QTEs he did say he'd be fine with them as long as they were a core part of gameplay, and I have yet to see another game that adheres to this 'rule' as closely as Ninja Blade does.
Aside from that, the actual gameplay is a lot of fun, too, even if the game as a whole is obsessed with style to a degree that leaves the Devil May Cry series in the dust.

I liked the QTEs in Ninja Blade. There was little to no penalty for them, and it actually felt like I was doing something cool instead of watching the main character pull stuff off I couldn't in the real game.
The exact opposite is true for the recent RE games. I dont know why, but they just get on my nerves.
I dont get why people say they distract from the action. If the QTEs are done right, you can hit the button, then look back in time to see the good stuff.

I don't have too much of a problem with them, haven't seen too many of them personally, but, like other posters have said, if they are used to trigger an animation sequence that the devs could not reasonably put into the control scheme (like the kills from God of War) or they are used in a way that makes sense, by mapping movements to the actual controller (press jump to jump out of the way or press left to dodge left), then it makes more sense and is passable.

I agree. I liked them in some of the Final Fantasy games because they were special and infrequent. But it's like spice in food. Too little it has no real effect, too much and it makes it unpalatable.gamegod25 said:

I don't like them. I don't want to be reminded that I'm sitting on a sofa clutching a lump of plastic. I enjoy a good immersive gaming experience, and every time I have to "press x to not die" (to borrow from yahtzee), it stings like a slap to the face.

1. i said this was for opinions, not yes or no, there's only been one person who ignored this, and though i will protect his identity i will say that he is a "computer mistake that will kill"...
2. i don't consider "press X not to die" a QTE, i consider it a dickish move meant to annoy, just like 1/2 second long time windows and cutscene-breakers (wonder if that'll catch on)

They don't work when they are thrown into the middle of a cutscene unexpectedly, when I've got a hand in a bag of crisps or holding a drink to my face, and almost cover my controller/console in snacks/liquid whilst I fumble for the controller.
Depends if you (the player) have the slitest chance of getting through it the first time around.
