You don't see alot of western's anymore. There have been sparse titles over the years, Call of Juarez and Gun being the most recent i can remember, but come on.

I feel like Redemption could save us... We've been stuck in the muck Of football players in armor firing weapons (Ironically i believe one of the voices in Gears of War is that of Terry Tate, the office linebacker...)

The question lies in the word "need". whether or not Western's are your thing, it's an area widely undeveloped as of yet. The topic of creativity in games is a very popular one, And while i recognize that Western's are a great American classic, something attempted on many different fronts in vast numbers, It's just fresh enough to start something.

We need a new face to replace The Master Chiefs, a guy who influenced so many protagonists in so many titles released since then. John Marston could be the man to do it.

I'm looking for a western that's, you know, good. So few have tried and so many have failed. I'm hoping that RDR will be great so that I can enjoy a game set in the west. So yeah, I need it.

There probably isn't so many Western's as games because unless it were to be done very well it'd just come off a cheesy and a bit of a cop out. (Which is slightly odd as its just another genre so why should it be any different to space for example?)

Red Dead Revolver, the precursor to Redemption, was close to great. It did a lot right, but had issues. Same with Gun and Call of Juarez.

There are so many obstacles to producing a good Western, but foremost among them is the inherent simplicity of the genre. Compared to other shooter-type games, your variety of weaponry and enemies isn't that great. Which leaves a lot of players bored. So the challenge is to create something playable, while maintaining the roots of the genre. It's a tough nut.

My hope is that RDR will hit it out of the park, because I agree, we do NEED a good western. Please God, let us have one eventually.

I very much agree.

I am looking very foreward to RDRedemption as Red Dead Revolver was quite good. But if you're the kind of person that needs 15 different weapons and 90 different faces to splatter it wasn't for you. I just hope the plot will be followable by newbies as not many played the first one.
I live in the midwest so it's pretty much required to have at least a passing interest in this era and archtype. I have wondered for a long time why game developers haven't tapped this obvious genre.

here's to hoping it delivers.

I'm with Russ, I want this game to be good so damn badly. The original RDR fell only slightly short of greatness but was still full of awesome Sergio Leone style charm, something Gun and Call of Juarez lacked, at least in my opinion. Gun was... okay... but it felt alot more like The Outlaw Josie Wales than it did The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, it also lacked cool villains... well... except for Hoodoo Brown, he was awesome.

Absolutely. I've dreamed of a Western game where guns can be constructed just like Tucco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez did it in Good, Bad, Ugly. Where clothing is picked on looks and possibly effectiveness rather than an armor class, like they did in GTA4.

And yea. The common user get's bored. The allure of a western is the ability to do whatever the hell you feel like doing, just like Eastwood, and if this can capture that, the rest is cake.

Basically, in the way that GTA channels the great gangster movies, I hope Red Dead Redemption manages to channel and pay tribute to the great westerns.

The first one Red Dead Revolver was cheesey but in a good way. For example the main characters motivation was stock western material but it was used good. Another one is that randomly you would get into quick-draw battles with people witch was random but they were fun and well done. Finally the whole game had this kinda grimey film grain look to it that worked and made you think that it was and old spaghetti western. The only downer was the fact that the enimies took alot of damage.

The genre doesn't really matter to me.
If it's fun and interesting, I'll want to play it.
However, after gta4, I'm not very optimistic. It'll probably be very depressing and bland.

No we don't need Red Dead Redemption. But then again, we don't NEED Half Life 2, Halo, Metal Gear Solid or any of those other lads. Someone out there will buy and enjoy this, so who are we to say whether we NEED it or not?

We dont NEED alot of things, But when something helps, it helps, and i guess what im asking, oh sultan of correctness, is whether or not Red Dead Redemption is capable of bringing out the best in our beloved games once again.

Suitable?

I didn't mean to offend. I was simply putting my thoughts into a possibly aggresive form. Red Dead Revolver may or may not be the Western themed shooter than many amongst us have been looking for. Then again, it may not. However, it is going to matter to someone. Call of Juaraz didn't meet my criteria for a kick ass cowboy sim, but I'm sure it met someones. The same applies here. As you say, Western themed games are a huge minority, and I believe that Red dead Redemption, whislt not neccessarily being the answer to cowboy fans prayers, will be one step closer to the game that will. In order to reach perfection, the genre may well have to make a lot of mistakes on the way.

Edit: Darkplace kicks ass.

There aren't many Western themed games b/c they usually terrible. Rockstars new sandbox western looks to actually be good. I have high hopes for it, and I'm looking forward to robbing banks and escaping in a dust storm. ^_^

Yea i know. Ive wanted an RPG western for years.
Something i keep coming back to is the way Tucco from good, bad, ugly went into that store and took parts from about 7 different guns and built his own. If that could be utilized into a game, then my god man, the possibilities...

Not to mention if while on a horse you could drop behind its side and fire above or below it...

There is just so much god damned potential here!

Red Dead Revolver was pretty good IMO, so why not.
Rockstar always makes quality work.
