In games like CoD 4&5 just to unlock the idems I want is enough for me. After that all I try do do is keep my percentage of kills vs. deaths as good as I can. (20 kills/2 deaths is way better than than 70 kills/68 deaths)

Depends if you gain anything to improve the enjoyment of the game, but generally no.

for instance, in halo 3 ranking up means nothing but its still a great game, and in COD4 and 5 it means something and they are great games. so do you care about ranking up if it won't do anything?
if u no ppl who play the game yes. if u dont no. but it kinda feels nice being a high rank

In CoD: WaW I just got to max level and stopped.
Prestige is totally pointless. I like having a large variety of weapons and various attatchments as opposed to having a diferent symbol and being stuck with the starter weapons.

If it doesn't really do anything, I don't see the point, although it can be a good indicator of how skilled your team/opposition are.
How? Most people will preserve thier K/D ratio by quitting early. It is to easy to boost these things.

ranks are ruining online gaming. The first question my friend used to ask me when he saw me was "what level are ya now in call of duty?!" Until I finally flipped out and hit him in the face. Sure, I was once interested in going up a rank in halo for a cool helmet, And in call of duty becuase I was gonna get desert eagle next rank, but besides that I never cared. Thats one of the things I like about TF2, no ones very competetive and usually they just mess around.

I care to an extent, I think it can be a good indicator of player skill in some games. Although it immediately becomes irrelevant when a player has a second account, or boosts for rank, and so a lot of the time it's meaningless.
I would still rather have a ranking system and a relatively straightforward way of tracking my 'skill' and progress than not at all.

I also like the 'Everyone chat' in PC multiplayer games (BF:heroes, CS;Source Anyone?) Because it leads to low opposition Hate...you know, If you kamikaze a plane into some guys on the opposing team, killing them and you, in BF heroes you can just laugh with them about it rather than, say, the Xbox approach (Little kid sending a private message saying "OMG WTF FATASS NOOB NERD KAMIKAzED ME FAGGIT!") Although I do like xbox, Alot of the community are dickheads, and the minority of people with mics get cussed down in Xbox live (Girls, Any kid whose voice hasnt broken. etc, so eventually the only people 'Allowed' to talk without being cussed at are Men between the ages of 16-25. *Cough Cough back to the 1950's)

Only for boasting rights amongst friends who play the game. Although in COD4 I have accepted I am neither going to be a higher prestige then one of my mates, as he is already at the top prestige rank 55. But I do take glee from pointing out his kill ratio is something like 0.89 whereas mines is 1.29.

No I don't care all it means is a shiny new badge and new games in CoD's
and if you use it to judge your opposing/own team then you can't really be accurate as you can get shit players that grind to high levels and good players that stay at low prestiges (CoD 4 again).

Well, it gives you a sence of acomplicments (damn I hate this language. Norwegian from now on)
Når du kommer opp i en ny rank er det som å få bekreftet at man har forbedret seg i spillet :)

As a level 10, I only did it because it was there. I did stop on Level 6 so I could get my gold Dragunov, and then I carried on. I did it for the challenge, not for bragging rights. Only thing is, people assume that I'm absolutely awesome, when really it's just perseverance. Amongst my friends on COD4 Lvl 10/55 is the norm, but I judge people by their K/D in game, and their win streak. I don't protect my stats by pulling the plug, but some of my mates do.

On R2 couldn't give a monkey's, I only play co-op and campaign.

In answer to the Question, its only for personal gratification that I look, otherwise I'm not really fussed.
