Now, i'm sure it's fun to jump into a game for the first time and immediately start owning the scrubs because you're a talented mofo and this crap comes naturally to you. But I don't give a fuck!

So who enjoys learning a game, y'know climbing out of that well of ignorance/lack of skill and finally, after months of practise can play on a decent skill level now.

The most obvious example would learning something like a MOBA or a fighting game. I (like to think) i'm decent at LoL finally and can now tell which character in the mess of particle effects is mine in a teamfight (shocking I know.)

It's a lot more satisfying when you can see your progress up the ladder of terribleness up to a level that doesn't feel like you're banging your head against a wall.

You have to learn what other people can do as well. Finding out that character X had a stun or trying to tower dive a Vladimir was all part of the learning process

It's why I like buying random new Champions. Since I can't seem to transition across skills from one person to another person with similar mechanics. i'm practically starting from scratch every single time.

Somehow, i'm not sure when, I randomly got good at playing Riven. Riven! I never do well with her! This only supports my theory that buying skins improves your skill at that Champion by 10/15 or maybe even 20 percent! GET DUNKED ENEMY TEAM!

I can even play Nocturne to a decent calibre now. I'm not broadcasting my retardation to everyone in the game by failing the easiest Paranoia ever. Nothing is funnier than seeing the screen fade out to almost nothing and hearing the trademark "Darrrrrknessss" then the kill comes up for one dead Nocturne. Lulz

I would like to say i've improved in fighting games but lol jk still can't block low or use that damn shoryuken motion 90% of the time :/

All the swaggy Phoenix Wright combos depress me...

I play dwarf fortress, does that answer your question?

OT: Yes, I find it gives a sense of gratification, esspecially when a plot is based around the character becoming better so your skill mirrors their growth wihout the game making them better

I try my best to play new games that don't revolve around RTS or FPS gameplay that feature war. I'm a bit of a scardey cat when it comes to horror games so i usually try one of those and its actually really difficult for me. I played Penumbra and Amnesia and they scared me half to death. When i finished i felt that the games themselves were brilliant experiences and wonderfully done but in no way in hell would i ever replay them. I just get random bouts of courage mixed in with a a hint of bravery. Its the same with movies, i usually keep to Action and drama but then i get this odd urge to watch a horror film.

My play styles always stay same though, overt aggression is usually my forte in strategy games.

I did take a stab at games such as SoulCaliber too. I'm not good at it but it is actually quite fun, how some those online players get off such amazing combos is beyond me.

I do enjoy trying to attempt combos in fighting games, nailing a nice 10 hit combo in Tekken 6 is a great feeling.

I like learning new games. What I hate is moving from, say, one FPS to another where the control scheme is identical save for one or two key features, like they've moved reload and jump and oh god I'm so confused I'll just mash all the buttons until I find the button that shoots stuff

Learning entirely NEW games? Always a pretty satisfying feeling. I really like especially when you start to get to grips with a system and you get that feeling of... "hey... I understand now... but if I keep it up, I'll excel." That's always a really nice feeling, to be able to see clearly that you'll eventually conquer the difficulty curve. Happened to me with FTL recently. I started off retardedly bad but as I progressed I realized that one day I will be master ship captain. Bests captinz in hole of spaec.

I normally find it more fun playing a new game for the first time online, than when I'm good at it later on.

I know Cod games aren't the best example of this, seeing as much of the gameplay is... similar to put it diplomatically, but when I first play a Cod Map online, I tend to amazingly, because I'm more careful, and don't know the danger zones, so I tend to storm them when people aren't expecting it.

...but soon enough I go back to my normal gameplay stratergy of trying to kill the enemy by drowning them in my dead bodies. :p

While i'm not a number cruncher I do love learning new games and ways to excel at them. That said I've never really gotten into the competitive Vs scene because I tend to flip flop genres and new games so I never progress passed the intermediate level and most players are at a much higher level of mastery than myself due to playing the same game or genre for donkey's years.

Virtual-On Tangram XBLA is the current one i'm into learning, it's quite unlike anything else i've ever played for a Vs fighting game, has a great deal of depth and very fast paced especially fighting at mid range or close combat. Half the battle is learning the controls, as the using the analog sticks are very unforgiving since the game is so quick paced and so different from any other game. However using the twinstick controller settings and mapping fire to the 2 analog stick buttons helps. Looking forward to VO1 upcoming release and playing online against other ppl.

Hawken is another game I'l be getting into at Xmas, depending on the price and quality of the controller I might buy that too, sure using a mouse to aim might be a tad quicker but learning to use the twinsticks effectivly should be more rewarding and not much of a handicap given the mechs are bullet spunges.
