Do you "get" fun?

I'm slightly worried about my mental well-being, to be honest. I feel like I don't "get" fun, that is to say, I feel that I lack the ability to understand fun.

I mean, I shoot people in a game and feel a dull sense of having done something... but that's basically it. I watch my custom character in a cut-scene and think to myself "I made him look cool", but I don't really feel any "fun".

In fact, I'm not even sure I really know what fun is.

Do you truly feel fun? Maybe you can tell me what you feel it as?

Well, fun seems to be fleeting... I find a glimpse, a little sparkle of fun and I chase it and I find boredom.

I'm not quite sure if I can even understand what I myself would find fun, for I've never found that I give very good answers.

I do, but I understand where you're coming from.
When I was in my late teens I was "Serious Business McGee" and it actually made me rather depressed.
I just sort of grew out of being so serious all of the time and now I'm a very light-hearted person.
Probably not the same for everyone in your situation but I definitely blame the lack of fun I was having on immaturity; believe it or not.

Obviously you have played a certain game/games to the point to where there is just no more challenge left. You should consider playing different games that interest you.

I decided that I was going to a strict concole gamer. But my friend and I played Garry's Mod together. Know I'm saving money to order parts to make a real awesome computer.

Try something different.

There's nothing to 'get' as such. It isn't art. Just distance yourself from what you usually do and try something else.

There's nothing wrong with fun as long as you know that that's all you're getting out of it. It's like Twilight. it's absolutely horribly written, but damned if you arent having a good time with it

Fun for me is a euphoric feeling, a rush of happiness or enjoyment.

For me the most fun things are physical, such as ATVing at fatal speeds around forest trails, or a good wrestling match. Good old fashioned male roughhousing with friends.

Video games can be fun as well. A common idea in videogaming, at least around here, is that the sillier something is, the more fun it is. I don't agree. Psychonauts bored me to death and Grand Theft Auto 4 contained some of the funnest instances in gaming I've encountered all year. Motorcycle chases through active subway tunnels and intense shootouts while escaping from a bank heist provided me with tons of fun.

Just think about stuff that makes you smile, and you will find it.

Is it possible that the glands that make me feel joy are malfunctioning or that I lack a certain thing in my diet that would allow my body to produce the chemicals needed for "fun"?

I can't think of much that makes me smile. I mean, I like wind and rain... and... women? So a super eskimo orgy is the answer to all my problems...?

I imagine that there's a chance your either getting used to the experience or simply treating the enjoyment your getting as normal. I know that i don't feel noticeably happier when playing games but i certainly enjoy them. I find them relaxing, even the stressful, tense ones, and its a release from the drabness of life.

Right now i'm playing Mirrors edge and as i finished it just now i felt very elated. I would call it fun in hindsight but at the time i wouldn't have said, "this is fun".

I think I might be having the same kind of feeling.

I mean, when playing a shooter or something, I don't really laugh out loud or grin. In fact, I smile very rarely when playing a game.

I wonder why...

While you are playing videogames, do you wish you were off doing something else? If so, you probably just don't enjoy games that much. If NOT, You probably have a low sense of... Well, fun.

Go to parties. Hang out with some friends. If you lack friends, make some. Then hang out with them. Watch comedy shows. Have sex.

Just some suggestions.

Do something else. For example I go off to a cabin every weekend in the summer and I generally look forward to being able to relax and shoot my bow/gun. Go fishing, swimming (the cabin is on a lake) etc.

I think you have to find a certain balance in your life. I get bored of games if I play them too much. Man its gonna be a LOOOOOOONG winter here in Minnesota. *sigh*

I find that when one tries to describe fun it ends up being a definition that is purley based on the perspective of the person defining it.

If you find yourself not having fun when you play a game yet all of your friends and the community around you treat said game like it was the holy grail of games (*cough* halo *cough*)
yet you find yourself not enjoying yourself at all then no, you are not having fun.

Take the revival of banjo kazooie, a game beautiful in graphics and is praised for its vehicle building system or something to do with it. The overall game is down right a mockery to what the originals were about, but despite that fact I find myself spending hours on end building those damned vehicles trying to see just how crazy and wacky I can make it. I've got a plane w/ a set of detachable wings with a fold out auxiliary pair right underneath and that can blow itself to crap with the touch of a button. I ramble.

The point is despite the fact that I cringe every time I'm forced to participate in another level that is a testiment to Rare re-living its glory days simply so I can gain access to more parts I have fun at some point along the way, and thankfully since making your vehicle is such a huge part of the game I could probably say that the game is fun....to an extent.

There are many games that I feel no sense of fun in, and those games collect dust somwhere within the bowls of my room next to mario tenis for the N64. Those however that are fun I will find myself yearning to pick up years down the line after I finished them. At least from my perspective a game that is fun can withstand the test of time and leave one yearning for the days gone by.

I could ramble on about how Nuts and Bolts does this by reminding the palyer of the original games, but I think I'll go find the nuts and bolts thread to do that.

Hope that helped, but I probably just confused you more :)

Is there some underlying reason why you have to be like everyone else? And not everyone enjoys the same things or reacts to the same sensations in the same way. Maybe you just are more serious-minded and focused than the rest of us.

Unless you really feel *unhappy* or unable to act I wouldn't worry about it. Serious people are very cool. :)
