Do you hate it when a great classic eg: Led Zeppelin's 'Tangarine', gets sampled or completely ripped by Rappers or DJs? I know I do. But what about you guys?

Yes, I really do hate that. Putting the fact that I can't stand rap aside, they don't even give any credit to the original songwriters, and thats just wrong.

Not really no.

Its not like it replaces the original, its just a different song.

On rare occasions it is done well I actually like it. It doesn't happen often enough though for my liking and most sampling of classic rock songs ends up being a mish mash of shite!

Used to piss me off no end when I was younger. Doesn't anymore, the sample just reminds me of what a good song it was in the first place and then I go listen to the original.

If you look in the covers you'll usually see credit to the artists of teh smapled loops.

It doesn't cahneg the original in any way, so i don't see the problem. Heck, it might even be a way for osme people to get to know the original.

"Yo dawg listen to this track"
"that cool, you know that sample is "old awesome song"
"nah i didn't"
"you should check it out"

later

"yo dawg that "old awesome song" is awesome, i went and got the Cd, and teh whole shit is teh pwnsauce"

But then again theres also this.

"say, have you heard them rappers sampling music i like?"
"no"
"well they do, and i hate it, i don't want any link to the peopel who listen to rap, regardless of the fact that ic an just keep listenig to the odl song i like, and that the original doens't change, they're still ruining it. It's like if someone tells a good joke wrong, it's spoiled for mankind for eternity"
"you're an fail-a-rific elistst snob"
"that i am"

Haha I guess, but when they add all those repedative beats and loops and stuff, it burns my ears to hell :p

Bob Dylan said that Hendrix's version of all along the watchtower was the proper version of it so it's not a blanket rule. But please god no more dance remixes of Riders On The Storm

This.

The best part of a song could be sampled. If people like the song for that part, it's not exactly fair play.

I like sampling. One of my friends makes beats and has done some pretty cool stuff with the samples.

Only if it is a dub step remix. There is that cover of Journey's Don't Stop Believing and it's just terrible. Some talentless fools covered the Wall too. Can't remember which part but I do remember it making me feel sick.

I also dislike it when a band covers another bands song and they don't change it in any way. They just play as it was originally played. Seems really pointless.

A remix here and there is fine as long as it's GOOD which seems to be beyond most modern "musicians". However, that being said, there are some crackin' dub step remixes on YouTube of pretty much every thing from Wait a Minute Mr Postman to Kashmir

I have the original AND the one with Snoop Dogg. Listen to the second one most cuz it makes me LOL :)

Also, does this extend to collaborations? I know Aerosmith did something with a rap artist/group (i forget who) And System of a Down worked with Wu-Tang Clan on their unreleased album...

Wow, I just totally went off on a tangent. Sorry guys :p

For me it depends on how it's sampled. If it's a Puff Daddy-esque sample (I refuse to call him P.Diddy) which is basically some dope rapping over the original track, then hell no. That lacks any sense of creativity at all and brings absolutely nothing new to the table. But if we're talking about Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" or Danger Mouse's "The Grey Album" which both mix all kinds of different samples and present the sampled pieces in new ways and give a different take on them, than I'm all for it.

Sometimes results can be pretty cool, but most of the time. Shit, shit, shit, die, die, die.
