Do you get this joke because i don't what it's supposed to mean?

Just for the sake of discussion did you ever hear something that you didn't understand or that it's supposed to be funny but you didn't get it?

maybe because it's filling/easy-to-grow and was pretty much the basis of military food for the 2 World wars, ever heard the joke about the soldier getting sent on potato duty ? it's peeling potatoes...for the regiment,hours of fun.

No, it isn't but I'm guessing it's this:

'meat and potatoes' is an economics term. i think it means important stuff. potatoes are cheap, easy to grow, and relatively healthy.

Potatoes are the most nutritious food we can grow(only missing two nutrients). They are cheap and the plants are fairly hearty. You can almost live indefinitely off of them. There really isn't any other food like.
