Do you go by reviews?

I've long since stopped paying much attention to movie reviews. I most always disagree with them and sometimes just make myself angry thinking about it. Seriously, sometimes they're just brutal.

Video game reviews and I have a more amenable relationship and I pay close attention to them when making purchasing decisions. Although, sometimes they are perhaps not brutal enough.

Do you go by reviews (for anything)?

Most reviewers (If not all) are either too harsh or too soft and I have recently learned not to go by reviews since I have disagreed with "good" reviewers many times by now.

No because people have different oppinions to me. What they like i may not like and vice versa. I'm going to say one thing. Twilight.

Yes i love the books, i love the films, but as im sure we are all sick of seeing, there are members on here who hate it and will constantly slag it off. Some havn't even read or seen the books/films. All they go off is what other's think.

Not all the time, Sometimes I find myself agreeing with the reviewer and other times I end up I don't. Either way, it dosen't usally affect my purchase.

Movie reviews: I've had a love and hate relationship with them, but that's mostly because I don't tend to share there tastes in filmaking.

Video Games Reviews: These are a little better as they show me some gameplay footage and at the same time shows me what the game did right and what it did wrong.

99% of the time, no. When I hear about a game, I very quickly judge whether I'll get it or not based on genre, title, knowledge of similar games, etc.

The other 1% are games that I am sort of curious about but haven't taken the time to really check out, then if I read a review, I'll read about the negative aspects of the game, if they are too numerous I move on, if it has little negative points and I check some screenshots and I like what I see, then I get interested.

Not really, if I'm interested in a game then I'll rent it and if I like it enough, I'll buy it.

Yes and no. Obviously reviews are the best way to find out about whether a game is good/bad and worth your time and/or money before actually playing it. But some reviews are obviously biased, and those are what usually put me off.

Kinda. But I read multiple reviews, and I nearly always wait for friends' opinions about it.

I just judge the game from gameplay trailers because alot of reviews either make the game sound worse then it is or sound like a free advertisment for whatever game their reviewing. If I like it alot I'll get it, if I'm not sure I'll rent it, if it's bad then I won't bother.

Most of the times I do, but if i've already bought a game and I really enjoy it, and then I see a reviewer give it a negative score, I stop reading their reviews.

I go by user reviews.

Most regular reviewers are too harsh on games and/or are biased against a certain game so they'll give Halo or Gears of War a 9/10 while giving something original a 6 or 7.

Yes, I'm looking at you Gamespot and IGN

I read reviews mainly for the sense of validation they give me, as I've generally been following whatever it is they're reviewing for long enough to have formed my own opinion and thus will have bought/watched it prior to reading any reviews.

When I do read reviews for things I'm genuinely in the dark about, I'm looking mostly for an account of the content/execution/what have you, not so much whether the critic personally liked it - this is especially true for films.

With video-games, which tend to have the implicit understanding that they are supposed to be fun, consensus is more useful - if all the critics tell you it's a terribly executed piece of crap then they are probably quite accurate, and there are all sorts of mechanical considerations to consider before the intangible 'personal enjoyment' factor kicks in - but with films, not so much. Critics will often rave about movies that us non-professional movie critics almost unanimously declare to be terrible, or pan things that are wonderful for their own inscrutable reasons.

And then there is Armand White, who is apparently incapable of enjoying anything that is actually good and heaps praise on films everyone else would pan, even other critics.

Usually, I'll look at an entire range of reviews. For example, for a game, I'll check Gamepro, GI, Gamefaqs, IGN, and 1up to get a general idea of a game's quality. However, for horror movie reviews, I generally trust one source, Arrow in the Head, because the reviewer on that site, John Fallon, has tastes in horror movies extremely close to mine, and he rates movies based on their quality to other movies of the same genre. He would compare Black Christmas to Halloween, not Black Christmas to Schindler's List.

Not really. I look at reviews and listen to them but in the end, they don't really affect my judgement. I've always gone by: "If you haven't tried something like it, don't judge it."
