I have only done the search button thing if certain conditons are met
1) The thread was done less than a week ago
2) The person has been here well over that time
3) nobody has said it yet

I also make sure to link them to the older thread.

I think I've done this like 5 times total, every time it's met with a lot of hostility.

Do you ever go easy on someone new here? For instance when someone new posts a thread that has been done 5 billion times; do you just let it slide or do you drop the 'search' bomb on them?

I've never dropped the search bomb on anybody. Sometimes it's a bit annoying but not so much that I feel that I personally need to be the asshole that points out their error.

That said, I don't even pay attention to join date or post count when it comes to my responses.

Usually no matter how many poeple start going on about using the search button, the threads still get lots of replies and often begin to take on a different feel to the previous similar thread, starting up new and interesting discussions.
