Welcome to the Escapist,
I listen mostly to ska music with bands like Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, I Voted for Kodos and a rash of other bands. Though, this isn't exclusively what I like, I'm also a huge country music fan and I love going two-stepping on the weekends. Plus I'll listen to alot of classic rock. Honestly the only genres I'm not a fan of are rap and metal. I don't look down upon people who listen to those types of music, I just don't enjoy them as much as other genres.
I listen to a lot of ska too, but I also listen to a lot of metal. You've listed a lot of ska bands I like, except for Big D & The Kids Table, Mustard Plug and Less Than Jake.
As for metal, I mainly listen to thrash or heavy metal, I dislike death metal and such. My favourite metal bands are Anthrax, Mastodon, Metallica (first few albums, but I sort of like the newer stuff (except for St. Anger)), Black Tide, Death Angel, Iron Maiden and all the classics.
I love a good bit of modern rock, like Black Spiders, Stone Gods, Airbourne, Priestess and Black Stone Cherry. Modern bands which nave taken the classic bands and updated them beautifully.
Other than that, a bit of blues (Seasick Steve, Joe Bonamassa), a little bit of jazz and things.
I guess to answer the title, I have four candidates for the band: Mastodon, Anthrax, Thin Lizzy and Streetlight Manifesto. For musician, three.
Kurt Cobain- perhaps not musically astounding, but truly iconic and a brilliant lyricist)
Tomas Kalnoky- wrote everything for Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22's Keasbey Nights album, Bandits of The Acoustic Revolution and Gimp. I absolulety adore all of it.
Phil Lynott- My favourite bassist, he had a really distinctive style and wrote some awesome stuff. Thin Lizzy were/are awesome, although they'll never be the same without him.
