Favourite bands would have to be (in no particular order)...

Coheed & Cambria
Mastodon
The Fall of Troy
Mew
Piglet
Protest the Hero
Scale the Summit
An Endless Sporadic

Favourite musicians... Claudio Sanchez, Thomas Erak, Brent Hinds, Chris Letchford, Zach Kamins, Andy Gentile, Brann Dailor. These are the ones I'm most influenced by, anyway.
Glad your into Scale the Summit. Its "Pretty" music, that still holds to bands like Decapitated and whatnot. And Mastodon is just awesome all day year round.

Without evening bothering to read the rest of this thread I feel relatively certain that I will be the only person mentioning

as my favorite band. I've always been really into music and when I first heard Alcest is was like an epiphany. All of a sudden I had a name to the music I'd been hearing deep in my head my whole life. I'll be impressed if another band ever even comes close.

edit

To add to this, Alcest is a one man project by a man named Neige. Neige was also either in the band, or wrote the songs for countless other amazing bands and projects. He's pretty much my hero.

My number one favorite at the moment is High on Fire.

I will be seeing these guys in 20 short days, should be an interesting time though I've never heard of them. Just going to see Skeletonwitch.

OT: Favourite Musician: Richard Cheese. I just love the way he touches things and makes them to be quite lulzy.
Favourite Band: Assassinate the Following.. it's a few of my buddies from my hometown, and they melt my face clean off.

EDIT: Seeing as my posting a video skillz are lacking, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGV3dKOJAsg
I envy you, they're known for being really good live...

Pink Floyd, and my favourite musician is Roger Waters. Both as a bassist for Pink Floyd and as a solo artist, he is just amazing. Sure, he's an egotistic bastard and all, but he still excels as a musician. Really inspired the way I play bass as well. I'm quite upset that he's not touring in Australia, but then again almost no one does.

Welcome to the Escapist,

I listen mostly to ska music with bands like Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, I Voted for Kodos and a rash of other bands. Though, this isn't exclusively what I like, I'm also a huge country music fan and I love going two-stepping on the weekends. Plus I'll listen to alot of classic rock. Honestly the only genres I'm not a fan of are rap and metal. I don't look down upon people who listen to those types of music, I just don't enjoy them as much as other genres.
I listen to a lot of ska too, but I also listen to a lot of metal. You've listed a lot of ska bands I like, except for Big D & The Kids Table, Mustard Plug and Less Than Jake.

As for metal, I mainly listen to thrash or heavy metal, I dislike death metal and such. My favourite metal bands are Anthrax, Mastodon, Metallica (first few albums, but I sort of like the newer stuff (except for St. Anger)), Black Tide, Death Angel, Iron Maiden and all the classics.

I love a good bit of modern rock, like Black Spiders, Stone Gods, Airbourne, Priestess and Black Stone Cherry. Modern bands which nave taken the classic bands and updated them beautifully.

Other than that, a bit of blues (Seasick Steve, Joe Bonamassa), a little bit of jazz and things.

I guess to answer the title, I have four candidates for the band: Mastodon, Anthrax, Thin Lizzy and Streetlight Manifesto. For musician, three.

Kurt Cobain- perhaps not musically astounding, but truly iconic and a brilliant lyricist)

Tomas Kalnoky- wrote everything for Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22's Keasbey Nights album, Bandits of The Acoustic Revolution and Gimp. I absolulety adore all of it.

Phil Lynott- My favourite bassist, he had a really distinctive style and wrote some awesome stuff. Thin Lizzy were/are awesome, although they'll never be the same without him.

Opeth is my favorite band. Mikael Akerfeldt is pretty much my idol as a musician, so I'll say he's my favorite.

The Beatles is my Favorite Band, with ELO and The Kinks fighting for Second Place.

I wish I was in a band though. I have some Idea for music but I can't write it down cause I suck at putting Music Ideas onto paper.
