Do you like entertainment from other countries?

I was just watching an episode of Downton Abbey to see what all the fuss was about and I really hated it. As I was reading about it on Wikipedia, it occurred to me that I really don't like very much entertainment that comes from outside the US. I find it... almost less quality in a way. Its kinda hard to explain. But shows like Dr. Who, Alphas, etc all strike me as lower quality shows than ones here in the US in terms of production values, acting, etc.
Now don't think I'm saying America does everything right in terms of TV shows and movie. We have our fair share of shit too. But I've just noticed a trend of myself personally to dislike music, movies, games, etc that come from outside the US. Even when I didn't know they were foreign.

So I'm curious, do you (whether you are American or not) find entertainment from other countries to be less enjoyable than that from your home country?

Edit:

I can see this getting out of hand so let me be clear:

In no way am I trying to insult you or your country; I'm only saying that I, personally, tend to dislike entertainment from outside the US.

Well...yeah - not being from the US, I kinda have to. Then again, I also like Japanese (e.g., anime), Russian (Nu pogodi is the bestest cartoon ever), German (I've got lots of German rap), and French (movies) stuff, too (among others), so I don't think it's solely USA that supplies me. I don't think I've ever been too attached from stuff made in my country, to be honest - there are a few things I like but not nearly overwhelming number of them or anything. Never been a huge fan of them, either. Frankly, I don't think many of the entertainment produced there would be that appealing across the world.

Yes. Yes I do. I find UK shows are either too serious, ie, all dramas, or too silly, eg Doctor Who. American dramas seem to get the balance better, and I greatly prefer art house cinema to cliché ridden-one-liner-filled-green screen-flavoured-shit from hollywood. Or perhaps just Joss Whedon and Michael Bay...no, no there are loads... let's not go into that.
And I am very fond of Daft Punk. Who are French. But then the french don't tend to think they're french enough, or they didn't until they were superstars, so I'm not sure if that really counts.

I'm Swedish, and all my comics come from Japan or America, all my cartoons as well, and most of my music is from another country, as is almost all of the books that I read. The few times I watch TV, it's a series from another country.

Yeah I like a few American shows like Breaking Bad, Firefly, Law & Order, and Dexter to name a few. American drama's are almost force fed to us at a early age, So they a highly regarded around here.

Us Brits admittedly don't do drama's particularly well from what I have experienced, and they end up either being total cheese fests due to a lack of budget, or lack of talent (I think the last decent high regarded British drama was Life on Mars which ended several years ago). America is capable of bigger and better drama's because they have the budget for it, and the big stars behind them, not to mention the variety of locals on offer. Downtown Abbey has it's niche, but overall it is a period drama aimed for people who are Britophile's, or old ladies, and considering there are a few of you guys downright obsessed with our culture for whatever reason, no wonder it has been a huge success.

Though the ace up our sleeve will always be comedies, we do love our black humor, and we get sarcasm much better than most other cultures. Red Dwarf, IT Crowd, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, Monty Python, all great stuff.

Also, if you think Doctor Who is cheesy as hell, then you have probably never seen Merlin, and that's probably for the best too, that series is cheesier than a hobo's penis.

What is that, two posts talking bad about Doctor Who? This is exactly why they won't let me at the mod panel!
I can honestly say that I think US TV has some of the worst productions imaginable, especially when they try to redo British ones. Just take Faulty Towers. They got rid of one character for one of the US tries... and it was BASIL FAULTY!
I really, really dislike US telly. Extremely annoying laughing tracks, clichès and Mary-Sues everywhere and a tendency to use the same material for every. single. comedy.
I like Community though, that one is brilliant.

But I'm a sucker for British TV. Not everything naturally but I always find something good from the Beebs.

Well at least it's music and not TV. German TV I find physically painful.

Well... British TV should be at least of some quality anyway, we have to frikken pay for it every week, or at least I do.

For me Russell Howard, and Stephen Fry Justifies my TV licence...even though i don't watch QI, and good news all that often.

Yeah, living in Australia means there isn't that much local stuff...and Abbott promised to get rid of government TV if he gets in, IIRC.

Anyway, so mostly British stuff, or some of the better US shows which don't use laugh tracks as a substitute for everything.

So? I'd kill to have all British channels here. Sadly the only thing we got via our cable was BBC Entertainment and apparently that has stopped now too...

I don't dislike it, but I can't much name any show form another country I like. Music wise A shit load, Iron Maiden are English, Sabaton is form Sweden, Rammstein is German. Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Airborne. Yeah I like music form other countries, not found a show I like that much though.

I am Canadian and I have to disagree with you... mostly. Okay our tv is pretty questionable with a few exceptions and even then I only find them passable (lost girl and republic of doyle are fun). Mind you I can't stand American shows like House or CSI type knock offs with the exception of Castle.

I do think that our music scene is pretty cool though and will go down defending CBC Radio, especially Radio 3.

I am love a Canadian low budget flick as much as an American blockbuster but I generally love movies no matter where they are from. Give me an Italian or Japanese horror over most anything else.

There's only really BBC One, Two, Three, and Four. Four is total rubbish most of time (mostly repeats), Three is pretty decent for the most part, but you get some truly retarded teenager programs on there like Teenage and pregnant, or young dumb and living off mum, like we need more promotion of that in our country. BBC Two has some truly great Docs sometimes with David Attenbrough, and Professor Brian Cox that are truly amazing (and inspiring), also a few great programs. BBC One has....Eastenders? and i would rather bang myself on a brick wall imitating the theme tune than watch it.

So yeah, it's not all that great. All the other channels such as ITV, Channel 4 and 5, are not much cop either, but TV licence is only paying for the BBC channels.

To be honest I would rather just have BBC Two, Three, Sky One (and a few other sky channels), Challenge, Dave, and that channel with Pawn Stars, and similar programs on it (Forgot it's name). Then I would be set for life with regards to Television.

I enjoy quite a few UK shows. Stuff like Dr. Who, IT Crowd, QI, 8 our of 10 Cats...Hell, even Downton Abbey. I thought I'd hate that show but wound up burning through 2 seasons in a few days when laid up with a broken wrist. Yes the production values tend to be lower but for me, that adds to the charm. I'm sure it helps that I spent my early childhood over there.

I quite enjoy entertainment from other countries.

I love anime and movies from Japan, martial arts movies from China, and there's tons of TV shows and movies that I enjoy from Britain. I also love Irish music. Hell, there's even some Indian movies that I really enjoy (you just try and tell me "Delhi Belly" isn't good).

You're right there - our comedy is top notch, but our (UK) TV drama is hit and miss, to say the least. We have some pretty decent documentaries now and again though.

Having said that as far as TV, film and music goes, most of the entertainment I go for is UK or USA in origin, with most of the drama being American. I like some Polish, Swedish and German bands, and films like A Prophet and Gomorrah which are French and Italian respectively.

The comedy show Angry Boys that was on in the Uk a couple of years ago is Australian, so that counts too. Fucking loved that show.

I like it more than the entertainment from my own country, overall. Particularly the popular entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great things coming out of here, the United States. But it has that "Justin Bieber" effect on me. I think the real reason a lot of Americans listen to foreign heavy metal or Jpop and Kpop or something like that, and watch anime ect., is because of the same effect people hate Justin Bieber and Twilight effect on people.

Twilight and Justin Bieber aren't or at least shouldn't be a big deal. Justin Bieber is one of a million people who are just like him. And there's plenty of horrible fiction just as bad as Twilight. In reality, some us here, being surrounded by things like Twilight and Justin Bieber all of the time makes us sick of it and hate it.

Some people take things further and just search out entertainment from other countries. And lo and behold something like PSY's Gangnam Style is the most viewed video on youtube. A lot of those viewers American. And Kpop is getting pretty popular in general. People are sick of the same old stuff.

I like plenty of stuff from my country. A lot of it better than other countries. I like My Little Pony, I enjoy the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I enjoy video games like They Bleed Pixels and Terraria. I think the United States has a fantastic punk music scene. Heck, I think the underground music scene of the United States is excellent in general. And not just that, we still have an excellent industrial music scene. Something, for instance, East Asia does not compete with. Europe has a pretty good industrial scene, but their current hardcore punk scene is not as vibrant as ours.

Japan and Korea certainly have their own problems. I hate lots of the homophobia and sexism and bullying both of these countries have. But I love some aspects of the entertainment. I love how I can play a JRPG and not have to play a testosterone laden macho-man. I love how Japan and South Korea and East Asia in general seem to be on a bandwagon of loving and promoting cute entertainment.

Of course, a lot of it is personal taste. While the United States objectively has a more vibrant Punk and Industrial scene than anywhere in Asia. And Asia has different things that the "West" doesn't. My personal taste dictates that I'd rather watch this.
Than most strict American pop music. I'm not a big fan of pop music period. But I can at least stomach cutesy Japanese electronic pop or Indie American pop. America doesn't really seem to go for cute as much as Japan does. And I find that kind of alienating. Some people blame me of liking things just because they're Japanese, but I like things from all around the world. I just happen to like some things that are more common in Japanese entertainment. I'd take something like My Little Pony which is extremely cute over something gritty and Japanese like Fist of the North Star any day. And aesthetically They Bleed Pixels is much more pleasing to me than Dragon's Dogma.

Doesn't stop me from being called names life "self hating" or "weeaboo" all of the time, though. With the reaction some people have to My Little Pony and cute anime and cuteness in general, I get the feeling many people think that liking My Little Pony is more "weeaboo" than liking Fist of the North Star. And in reality they are just using that as an insult to say they don't like or approve of cute girly things. And they don't respect cute, girly, feminine people either.

Anyway, I tend to like things from around the world. I tend to like foreign entertainment than domestic entertainment overall probably. But that's just because I feel that domestic entertainment is overrated. There's something unsettling about the fact most successful entertainment is in English when Chinese is the most spoken language worldwide. But me, it shows that American entertainers and entertainment culture is privileged and imperialistic. And I don't approve negative cultural imperialism that I think the United States entertainment industry is often responsible for.

So basically I like different things from different countries. For things like video games and animation and comics, I tend to like Japanese and sometimes South Korean entertainment. For things like music, I tend to like American and sometimes European music the most often. If just for the fact we have a much better rock and industrial music scene. Socially and politically, I tend to like Scandinavia. Scandinavia is definitely more gay friendly than say, anywhere in Asia. Or America, for that matter. We in the United States and much of South America are definitely behind Northwestern Europe on gay/LGBT issues.

So yes, I definitely like entertainment from other countries. If not more than my own. I think that everyone should feel that way. That is, appreciate entertainment from other countries. There's so much good stuff out there for every sort of person around the world that it feels foolish to me to stick to the media of one country.

I like your attitude sir, people shouldn't limit themselves to what is in their country, just because it's in their country. Also liking different things from different places, one might also grow to respect other cultures, and become a better person for it.

In terms of Music for me personally, all I used to listen was American music, and nothing else (Grunge and Nu Metal was a huge big gateway drug for me). It was only when i discovered the British Punk/Post-Punk/Shoegazing/Baggy/Trip-Hop scenes a few years ago that I only started to appreciate my countries music.

Anime, anime, JRPGs and more anime. Also manga.

I just don't bother with TV programmes in general. They're all pretty much "meh" 99% of the time.

Instead i'm playing so much League, so little time. I barely get any anime watching time in anymore :(

Most of the stuff I like comes from my neighbour to the south, so yes. Though there is plenty of good Canadian stuff, they're pretty few and far between.
