I loved San Andreas. Really fun and had varied missions throughout. GTA4 started off okay but all the cool stuff I liked at the start got removed as I went on and the characters weren't as likable as in the other games.

I've attempted to play almost all of them, from the original GTA (on the PC, way before 3 made the series popular), up through SA, so I guess all but 4, and I at least sort of like most things about the games but really, really hate playing them for one reason: the controls. Doesn't matter whether it's the console or PC versions. I cannot find any way to play them that doesn't make me angry after half an hour or so. And it's not even the completely unplayable remote control helicopter missions and crap like that, it's fundamental stuff like driving cars. If I could play GTA3 and the other games made with its engine using the controls and car physics model from something like Burnout Paradise, it'd make my day, but the way it is now, screw it.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Grand Theft Auto franchise. They are pretty funny. Even past the obvious pun humour (overuse of 69) it is a pretty witty criticism of American popular culture in the last 30 years. It has the best licensed soundtracks in video games. The games in the main series (excluding the portable ones) are of highest quality for the era in which they were released.

I really liked GTA IV because it was different from the others and pushed the series foreword but I really think the series peaked with San Andreas. It was the largest in scope, had the most free roaming space, was dynamic in tone (from Boyz N the Hood style in Los Santos to a secret agent feel with Toreno's missions), the most customizable character, added the most new features, and had a bitching soundtrack.

EDIT: Gramatical error fixed.

I've played Vice City, San Andreas and the fourth one. I have loved all of them. It is just a fun a game to dick around in and steal stuff (Mostly cars). I was disappointed by the fourth removing airplanes, but I loved the new car physics (Even though it took some time to get used to) and the multiplayer was fun. It just sucked that when playing multiplayer free roam it took forever to get weapons so if you and your friends wanted to go on an epic police holdout and then run to a getaway car (which is fun yet really hard on the car getting to part), you have to spend a good 10 minutes getting guns, armor and an appropriate car.

I wouldn't say I really like them, but they are good time-killers. Usually I just find the fastest car/bike and start finding ramps to jump off. I can certainly see why people like the series though.

It was great until 4 happened and they tried to make a life simulator out of it. Saints Row basically took over for me at that point because it was just far more fun and you know less serious.

It used to be the king of what it did, sitting proudly over other games as "The fun one" but then GTA 4 came along and brought tedious crap to the series like the bowling etc and while it wasn't looking Saints Row 2 slapped it across the back of the head with a giant dildo and Just Cause 2 picked up its crown and ran off with it.

Well for me its the fact that there's nothing to do. Yeah you can grab a car and a gun and go crazy, but that doesn't appeal to me at all. I remember playing GTA when i was younger, and i remember the fun i had just driving around crashing into things, but i just get bored of it now.

I like the story modes though.

I've always liked the series. Never bothered too much with the missions or story, but if you just feel like some instant chaos/whacky hijinks, GTA always satisfies.

I loved screwing around on GTA 3 but I never really cared for the plot. It was always more fun to drive around, cheat yourself to unlimited cash and, ammo then, have yourself a police/military shootout.

Vice City was my favorite one though. I think I still have it on the PS2 but I can't remember. I know I've got San Andreas and even though I loved the level up feature, it was my second-to-last favorite in the series. I hated the character and, thought the city was small and kind of bland. The county was huge but the city itself was forgettable. GTA IV was beautiful but it's my least favorite. Too dark, too difficult to control, too mundane. Next to Saint's Row it's a fail.

I plan on grabbing a Dreamcast, which I think had GTA 1,2 and, London. I haven't played any top-down GTA titles and plan on fixing that soon.

I must say, I love the GTA series. I like shooting things nigh-endlessly, I fucking LOVE racing (Yet not racing games, beyond the Need For Speed franchise. I should totally try out Driver: San Francisco, though. If it can impress Yahtzee, it'll probably make me play it in my first sitting until I realize one and a half days and four meals have passed...And I also like third-person shooters. While I may love first-person everything better, I still like third person shooters. As long as they're on the PC. Army of Two can go jump off of a cliff. So, yeah. Here's my experience with GTA so far:

1 & 2: Not applicable. Not in my time-frame of living.

3: The original? Sounds fun. I'm reluctant to try it if it's anything like Vice City. No aiming, no simply running away from the cops[footnote]Works in GTA: SA to a point. I once actually simply evaded three stars! And, no, I didn't just pick up a bribe when I wasn't paying attention.[/footnote], the cars control so well they're hard to control, and seem to accelerate to top speed instantly upon moving...

3: Vice City? See 3: Original. Tried to play it, and I just couldn't. Nope.

3: San Andreas? Awesome. Actually better than IV in my opinion, even though that's the latest in the series, and the one I started with. With IV's Liberty City, it's just gray buildings, with the occasional tan beach running along the coast. In SA? Let's see, there's some gray city, a rural countryside, a desert, colorful city, and a lot more rural. Fun. Also, jets. Also, guns akimbo. Also, K-DST, Bounce FM, Playback FM, and fun radio stations in general.

IV: The story is fun, EfLC is fun, free roam is fun, and the ballistics work the best, in my opinion, here, because I was brought up on modern games. I can stop, prone, aim, fire in single shots to the tune of one shot every two seconds, and still not hit anything no matter what weapon I am using in Battlefield 2. Which is why I am looking forward to BF3: same Battlefield sized maps, vehicles, and all that jazz; and hopefully the working ballistics from Bad Company, but enhanced, and great gameplay improvements.

I love every GTA except GTA IV. Episodes from LC were a lot more fun, but even they were boring as hell when compared to GTA 3 era games. I still can't decide which game I like better and why. San Andreas, Vice City and GTA 3 raised the bar for free roaming games so high. Even the 2 PSP/PS2 games LCS and VCS were a lot more fun than GTA IV. I don't know what were they thinking when they decided to add so much realism at the cost of fun. Not to mention the lousy PC port. That was depressing.

its meh to me, i have better, much more effective 'stress reliever' games.

most of which involve a very sharp thing being forcefully shoved where its not going to be doing any good for that person/monster/thing.

which kinda ties to me favoring melee VS ranged, but, there's also the plot, setting, and all that, it is, to simplify, not interesting in the least

I am a huge fan. I love(d) Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City is my favorite GTA, SA was unadulterated fun, and IV is a monumentous step forward for Gran Theft Auto, and video gaming as a genre.

I can't wait for GTA:V

It's alright, but it takes itself a bit too seriously for me. Though, it did spark a few more interesting, much better games, and practically spawned an entire half-genre of gaming, so I'll give it that. The freedom to do things was always fun, like just sending a rocket to the oncoming mob boss' car and seeing the mission be complete, even if you were supposed to run away from them for awhile, killing them gradually. But, we did get Saint's Row, Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption, and L.A. ConfidentialNoire from it, so, hey, good for it.

I love the series, I didn't like GTA IV as much though, way to gritty, but me and my friends found ways to make that game last for months, with such multiplayer shenanigans as barricading ourselves in the cluckin bell and defending ourselves against angry cops, until one of us made a run for it and returned in a helicopter for extraction, thankfully Saints Row fills the sillyness void left by GTA IV

I don't hate the series. 1 was okay, 2 was great, 3 was great, Vice City was amazing, and never played San Andreas. What I hate is GTA for taking the fun out of the series.
