Do you overclock?

Well, I have pinmodded my old Acer laptop, which meant it came from 1,7ghz to 2,26ghz. Which is pretty sweet.
Sounds good but what do you mean by pinmodded? I haven't heard the term before.
.. I don't know if you have seen a CPU before, but it has a lot of small pins. Some of them can be connected with a pin, which leads to the CPU thinking it has more frequency.

At the risk of sounding like a complete computer-illiterate idiot, how does overclocking work? How do you do it?
Thanks in advance.
It depends on what you're overclocking. There are reams and reams of information about overclocking, too much to summarize in all honesty.

Case? Heat sink? etc.?

I just ordered a ton of parts so that I can overhaul my desktop and overclock my i7-920. I haven't overclocked a system before, but I'm really looking forward to going through and getting it all together and running.

I know the feeling! My PC is only a few weeks old now, and I put a LOT of time into researching parts and such. What did you get? And if you need help with OCing either send me a PM or use the Tomshardware.com forums since I've been frequenting them quite a bit, plus, the community there in general is good with answering questions or at least giving advice/links.

Anyway, since you asked, here's my PC after spending about 2 or 3 hours putting it all together: (Sorry about img quality, took them on my iPhone before checking how dirty the lense was ><)

And here's what it looks like turned on (first time run):

The parts are:
i5 750 CPU (OCed to 3.8ghz)
Zalman CNPS10X Extreme heat sink
MSI P55GD65 mobo
Patriot Viper II Sector 5 RAM (1600mhz 1T 8-8-8-24)
Sapphire 5850 GPU (OCed to 985/1200 for gaming)
Corsair 750TX PSU
Antec 900 II case
2x Seagate 500GB 7200.12 HDDs in RAID 0

What is this I don't even?

OT: No, seriously. I keep seeing this word on the internet, so can somebody tell me what it means?

To increase the speed of a component beyond the manufacturer's specs. I.e. taking an i7-920 and pushing it past 2.66 ghz.

Sweet, I'm going to be pulling my mobo/CPU out of my old case and putting it into a new one with some other new goodies. My final build will be:
Case: Coolermaster HAF-932
Mobo: Asus P6t (From my old rig)
CPU: Intel i7-920 (going to shoot for at least 3.6 ghz, but will take it as far as I can) (From my old rig)
Heatsink: Thermalright TRUE Black
PSU: Corsair HX1000
RAM: Corsair Dominator-GT DDR3 1600 7-7-7-20
Video Card: Radeon 5970
PhysX Processor (hopefully): Geforce GTX 275 (From my old rig)

There's a mod that allows you to run both a Radeon and a Geforce at the same time with the geforce acting as a dedicated physx processor and the radeon doing all the heavy lifting. Hopefully it works out cause then I'll be able to run all the fancy physx stuff in games like Metro 2033.

I'm gonna be shooting for at least a 3.8 ghz OC, but if I can go a hair above that or even hit 4.0, that would be just awesome.

Damn, pullin out the big guns with a 5970 huh? Pretty sick! And pricey! I went more conservative with the 5850, but I specifically made sure that in, say, a year I can crossfire another to keep it performing great. Or, maybe sell the 5850 and go with 2x 5870... I sorta wish I had just spent the extra $100 on the 5870 but it's all good! Runs great as is.
You should easily be able to do a 3.8 or 4ghz OC. I'm about to try for 4ghz myself but if I get it stable, it'll really just be for fun I don't think I'll leave it there all the time. What voltage are you using on your RAM? Mine says it can run the same timings at 1.7V (according to XMP) but just to get to the load windows screen it took 1.75V, and then still got BSOD so I probably need around 1.8V for CL7 and I'm a little worried about going that high.

The PhysX thing is new to me, first time I heard about it was when I found a folder for it on my PC. I'm not sure which game installed it, but considering I don't have an nVidia, I don't know why it's even there. Unless... maybe an ATI can run it afterall! Hah that would be cool. I don't see why running an ATI as gpu and nVidia as physics engine wouldn't work. Probably will take some tweaking tho. But yea, that sounds sweet man! Is Metro 2333 really worth it? I'm just playing through Crysis now which is pretty awesome. Metro seemed... hmm.. I dunno, but I'm on the fence as to whether I should get it.

Turning on PhysX with a radeon card = Radeon card begs for mercy and tries to commit suicide to make the pain stop.

Metro 2033 is fun and as far as system benching goes, makes Crysis its *****. It's easily the most demanding game on the market at the moment, however, unlike Crysis Metro 2033 is actually fun.

I was thinking of getting a 5870 now, and then crossfiring another one later, but the end cost would have been 200 bucks more as opposed to just getting one 5970. Those 200 bucks could easily get sunk elsewhere. So I figured I'd just cough up the extra cash for one 5970 and enjoy having a card that absolutely destroys everything else on the market. A little extra cash now to save some cash down the line. :D

I don't get to actually put this all together until next week. It's in transit from Newegg right now and regardless, I'm still out at work and don't get home till Friday. When I do get it put together and OC'd I'll post CPUID info for anyone curious to look at, plus copious pictures.

I understand there's a minor increase, but I'd prefer to do it when my components' warrantee is already over.
Oh wait, lifetime warrantee.

Is it worth overclocking an i7 920? And does it affect TurboBoost?
I find it really helpful because like nothing uses more than 4 cores, and probably 75% or more doesn't use more than 2 cores.

It's super quick without the OC, but hey why not :p
