Do you play Dungeons & Dragons?

Well ..... *deep breath* ....

Played AD&D mostly, but also WoD (Vampire, Mage, Werewolf, and Wraith), Rollmaster, Rifts, and a few others of our own design. Also did the Games Workshop thing - playing Traitor Marines in Epic and 40K (I started playing wwaaaaay back - all my marines were still the 'beaky' type marines with sleek bolters and studs on their shoulders). Also the two greatest of all GW, Blood Bowl and Necromunda.

I've always had the good fortune to hook up with groups who play. Even in Japan, where I lived for 7 years, I hooked up with the Kansai Gamers Group where we would have weekly games of all manner. I was known as the Drunken DM -- I would drink like a fish *whilst* DMing ... made for some extremely unexpected situations. I was like some kind of Shaman in a drug-induced frenzy directing the world around them.

But since my first game, I'ev been a DM/Storyteller basically. It's in my blood it seems, and in every group I join I seem to become the failsafe DM.

EDIT: Best online RP I've ever found was at White Wolf. They had a WoD Java Chat set up, set in 'New Bremen'. City was crawling with Camarilla & Sabbat vamps, Werewolves (Fuzzies), hunters, magi, fae, and even Kindred of the East and Wraiths, and the ol' hapless mortals as well. Somehow it all worked together. *Fantastic* RP there. I had lots o' fun playing as James Francis, the lovable insane Ventrue (yes ... imagine ... a crazy vamp who *isn't* a malky).

Shame New Bremen was destroyed in Gehenna/the Apocalypse. It was fun, and free.

I was almost in a 3.5 OTI game group for a minute but then everyone else sort of... lost track of it in other business, leaving myself as the only one who really remembers that we were planning a game anymore.

I still haven't managed to find a new group that's composed of a suitable enough fraction of other noobs for me to not feel like a burden to everyone else and as such I haven't been in an actual game of it, ever.

I got into Dungeons & Dragons earlier this year, and though I still haven't learned most of the basics, I'm finally starting to find people who would play with me and was wondering what you guys thought of this hobby.

Are there any other great table-top Role-Playing Games like DnD, Pathfinder, etc.... that my friends and I might enjoy that you play?

It's all about the group's playstyle. In DnD itself you have a lot of possible settings to use that would draw players in, to inspire your own games. As of systems, I've always been partial to White Wolf's World of Darkness Storyteller system. Easy to learn, easy to play, easy to adjudicate rules without a hitch. It's ideal if you're doing anything contemporary. If you're willing to go into the sea of roleplaying systems you'll find there's a system for pretty much anything. Really.

Define play. If you mean I work with my fellows to accomplish our grand quest, or does me constantly sabotaging my friends efforts by poisoning their recovery items and casting flare at them mid battle so they die and I can steal their shit after I return when the enemies leave? Cause I fit into the latter catagory. Hint bribe the DM mine takes beer.

Started playing in 1990 and would still be playing now if I had the time(family + work + school = bleh). I gave 4E a pass because I'm not into miniatures games much, not to mention I despise the way they pretty much raped the Forgotten Realms. Still looking forward to trying out 5E when it becomes available for public playtesting.

Been playing dnd 3.0 and then 3.5 for ten years now (33 this year). Just picked up the books way back then, got some interested friends involved, and now the same core group of friends with some VERY welcome additions are now playing with us. Take the time to find people, cause they usually stick with it with you, and these friends of mine are now some of my closest mates too. We meet once a month now with pathfinder.

At the risk of sounding like a social worker (which i am) - you really get to know your mates better too. Nothing quite like watching your mate tackle a moral quandry to find out how he ticks. Sometimes scary, but all the time hilarious and fun!!!

For one thing, elitists, who'll be all over you for the simplest errors regardless of skill.
Also be on the lookout for situations where there may be more than meets the eye, because many a dm will throw in little things that you didn't notice unless you pass certain checks, from really good to disasterously bad.
And beware the Munchkins.

I've played 3.5, 4.0, Pathfinder, a hybrid monstrosity composed of 2nd Edition, 3.0 and 3.5, Savage Worlds, and a horrifying system someone was playtesting.

I wish I had played Shadowrun, old World of Darkness (or the newWoD with the old fluff. I hear the new version is less clunky but the old version sounds more interesting) and Paranoia, as well as a few other titles.

While I have a few recommendations (namely Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, or Mutants & Masterminds, depending on what you want to do), what matters most is that you have fun with your group. Case in point:

I despise 4.0 from the bottom of my soul. At best it's a halfway decent game, but they cut support for the infinitely better[footnote]Note: This is not opinion, but science fact. Look it up. [/footnote] 3.5 to make it have a chance to succeed.[footnote]Guess how much of a success it was? [small]hint: not a lot[/small][/footnote] However, the most fun I?ve had was with a group playing terrible 4.0 modules with a bad DM, because the group was otherwise fantastic and I was playing Thrasius, Warforged Paladin of VIRUE![footnote]Of relevancy: He was literally born yesterday.
Also, when the module's stereotypical nubile female elf questgiver approached us, I asked her "Good day sir! What seems to be the problem?".

The party was arguing over the correct course of action. After a minute, I picked up my figurine and moved it forward.
Me: Is anyone going to stop me? I say in real life.
The party continues to argue. I move Thrasius further.
Me: Guys, is someone going to stop me?
Once again the party continues to argue. I know that there will be a trap (likely a pit trap) soon, because this is a stereotypical module and I?m moderately genre savvy. However, Thrasius is not. He was created yesterday, after all.
So I continue to move my character down the narrow corridor, and the DM tells me to stop.
