Do you put helmets on your characters?

I like hats.
Have you considered applying for Valve, specifically on the Team Fortress dev team? You seem to have potential on that venue!

OT: It entirely depends on the headgear in question. If it looks cool and goes well with the rest of my character's outfit, I'll wear it. I do however prefer headwear that doesn't cover the face, if the entire face is covered it can sometimes dampen the feeling of personality for me.

If there are extra stats on the helmet of course I would wear it. I'm not going to sacrifice my character's abilities for the sake of some strange projection of vanity.

I tend to use helmets as a substitute for a shield. Let's say a character of mine wields, say, a broadsword and shield - this set-up would use no helmet. However if my character was proficient with two-handed weapons, and used a claymore, then they would wear a helm to make up for the lack of a shield.

My spellsword/battlemage characters are the exception to this rule, who use neither shield or helm due to being able to cast Shield spells.

Meh. Starting off, every bit of armor and stat boost is a boon. Only later on will I weigh helmet choice on aesthetics. And even if I spend an hour or more carefully sculpting a potato into a work of art, I've just spent an hour staring at it. And if I ever get the uncontrollable urge to peep at his/her face, I just unequip the helm and look... easy.

As the op mentioned, seeing a formation of troops in full helms with only important characters baring their heads is just so... I mean, I understand they're important and all, but... really, it's just silly and hurts atmosphere.

Here's a lineup of guardsmen, find the one that can help you track down the serial killer:

See? I rest my case.

Disregarding the protection they give, i like helmets and masks. Almost always wear them. It's a customizable artificial face.
That reminds me, i gotta find a less annoying helmet than fin gleam, green obscure piece of crap

No helmets, ever. Unless they provide a very specific and necessary benefit (Oblivion had one that gave you night-vision), I just don't like them.

Yep. Helmets are hardly heroic and all that, but my characters in RPGs tend to be the pragmatic mercenary type with a loosely defined but certainly existent sense of morals. Helmets fit in with that.

I tend to go with the helmets unless they look really ridiculous, at least when I play a warrior. With mages and rogue types it's usually less of an issue.

For some reason game developers seem obsessed with armored beanies.

if i can help it no, if my character looks retarded without it yes. Im the sorta "massive sword/gun" type and the cooler i look the better i tend to fight, in oblivion i had a claymore and some standard iron armour but i looked EPIC and i did the final main quest with no problems (asides from the deidra god arriving and me running in fear for the first time in history)
if you did the main quest right away of course it you wouldn't have had problems. oblivion makes all types of enemies super weak if you are low level so running through the main quest isnt hard at all if you stay weak
nah i didnt do the main quest first, the deidra warriors were not a major pain in the ass just more an inconvenience on my health item stash :p

My characters only wear helmets if they look good. Im a bit of a realism nut sometimes, so I consider going into medieval combat without a helmet on is suicide.

If it is first person, then I will wear a helmet. If it is third person, I will hear a helmet or hat not just for the stats but also for aesthetics.

Horay! 5 pages in and someone finally says it. I was thinking that I would have to be the one to make that joke.

No never, unless it gives me +1 Perception or Rad resistance it's a no go, sunglasses though should be an option in all games.

Well yes, cause you know, ya kinda need in when your in space, fighting the covies..... oh those games. Well no. Helmets just kinda suck in stats and usually look stupid. There was only two guys who pulled off helmets- Anthoney and Claton Carmine. Ben is kinda effy, what with being eatten by the wrom and stuff.

I don't usually, but for the final fight in new vegas my character wore his usual white suit, and a 2000 cap combat helmet. Looked SO cool. Other then that, if the helmet covers my entire face then I'll wear it.
