For those of you who don't remember or don't know what DOS is then this thread isn't really for you.

ID Software (the creators of DOOM and Rage) once had a little series of games known as Commander Keen. They were great little plat-formers designed to compete with Mario Brothers except on the PC. Most purists know that they only created 7 of these games. A couple of years ago some fans of the original series decided to take it upon themselves to recreate and continue the games.

Keen 7 (not Keen Dreams):

Keen 8 can be found here:

Keen 9 is still currently in development (I'm guessing maybe halfway done?):

Lastly, if you're confused about how to get DOS games working correctly on your PC when they are no longer supported I suggest you download DOSBOX which can be found here:

God Bless Apogee, ID, all the old guys...

Some of the best games I've ever played (as I remember them) booted from DOS.

Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 1 and 2, Hocus Pocus, Descent... I don't think I had any other games until I got my mega drive.

The first DOS game I remember playing was the original X-COM. But, in my house we also had Keen and Wolfenstein as well.

HA... REMEMBER? It was the golden age of gaming... ah well, maybe silver *g*

And all this fiddling: Throwing out some drivers so you can get 20kb more free memory to get over the limit to start a game. And changing to XMS to meet some requirements. You had to WORK for your games. Today it is all plug&play and "Windows will take care of it" BAH, young whipper-snappers.

But yeah, i played a lot of games. Stunts, LHX - Atack Chopper, the glorious X-Com series, all those side-scrollers, good old RPG's. Ah ... good times (And yeah, i have of course a Dosbox on my monstrous monolith-like PC to enjoy some of those... just like i have a SNES-Emulator too)

Awesome, more Keen games! I used to play the hell out of the shareware versions of them and most other Apogee titles back when I was a kid, but I never got the full versions until I recently bought the Commander Keen collection on Steam. But, oh yes I do remember the DOS days. Since I had a 486 up until 1999 and only upgraded to Win 95OSR2 then, DOS was kind of my main gaming platform up until 2002 or 2003 when I got a modern computer with Windows 2000 and later XP.
I loved the DOS days, the Adlib/SB16 FM synthesizer and all those awesome games - Wing Commander, X-COM, Shattered Steel, Command & Conquer, Monuments of Mars, Blake Stone, Wolfenstein 3D, all the Sierra adventure games, Might & Magic and Wizardry, Carmageddon, Flight Simulator 4, Dawn Patrol, Fire Power and Last Half of Darkness.

I remember some PC Booters like Digger, Pole Position and Paratroopers too. :)

Oregon trail, I remeber playing that on the old macs back in 2 grade.
Did Macs used to run DOS?
No, but oregon trail was a PC, and mac game at the time. I remeber you needed DOS to play the pc version. I could be wrong about all this, my memory it is a little fuzzy.
