Well I was just watching a ZP review when Yahtzee made a complaint about how consols are tied down because of contolers. And i had this REALLY odd flashback to Gods only know how many years ago and was wondering if i was just crazy or if this really happened so...

Do ANY of you remember when the ps2 tried getting into the online scean with Everquest: (insert title i cannot remember here), and put out a slew of products, INCLUDING a full keyboard to be used in game? I am getting two messages from my brain, one saying i am crazy, and the other clearly remembering this happening...

And as a tangent, if this happened before, why hasnt it happened again? Consoles have been trying for years to get into games that have remained resolutely PC only genres. If they can release attachments and periferals (spelling?? O-o) to make rythm games Like Guitar Hero and DDR more fun to play (keeping in mind that both games CAN be played on a standard controler), why cant they just release a simular attachment or such to allow for those games that are clearly harder for controlers to master easier to play and produce?

-NOTE: i may have gotten the game in the first part of this (middle paragraph) wrong, so please dont flame me, just politely correct if you would-

The actual title of the game was Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest. You got the world it was set in right, which is more than what I can say for other people that I know. Personally, I never played this online, so I had no need for the keyboard or any of that stuff. I just played it with my brother for "bonding time", as I call it.

As for your other question, I think that the companies are too busy appealing to their current customers' needs to go into those types of things right now. I don't think that something like that is anywhere in any of their priorities.

HA! i knew i wasnt crazy! As for companies being too busy appealing to current customers, thats a rickety platform to stand on. All the companies are jockying for the gimik gamers, what with project Natal (which reminds me of the ps2 eyetoy thing they tried to integrate into a bunch of games, most notably ddr from my expiriance) hitting for the X-box, which is another of thier feeblely-veiled attempts to copy nintendo and the wii, with Sony not far behind. If they were keeping to who they currently had, microsoft would continue pumping out games whos core appeal was in LIVE, and Sony would be struggling to push forward the graphical super giants that take too long, with sort of tacked on online bits (that might be unfair to sony fans, but i wont revise that statement until someone with a ps3 lets me toy with the online stuff) and once again i point out the guitar hero arguement from my original post, though now that i think on it, using that arguement i suppose we would have to wait for some third party to bring the concept back up.

That's a good question, esp. since consoles have essentially become glorified PC's anyway, esp. with aforementioned keyboard peripheral.

You can get both mouse and keyboard for the PS3, but no (maybe some) games support it.

I'm sure there has to be done some hard work to modify the game.

But when GTAIV already has been made to work on the PC (with keyboard and mouse, ofc), why not a patch enabling this?

I would totally buy more games for the PS3 if this would be possible.

I think part of the issue is the appearance of the price. I know when a game comes out with a new peripheral, it looks really expensive, and at that moment tends to be because of said new peripheral needed for the game. Things like Guitar Hero have done so well because the peripheral, the guitar controller, has kept its use. I think more companies would do this, but only if they could guarantee the peripheral would have the use on more than one game, and thus give the people more incentive to buy it.

Basically, a fancy keyboard setup isn't worth the extra money if it is only usable on one game, so it won't sell as well as another console stand alone game.

Rathy makes a good point. but i think tight now would be a pretty good time for it, with alot of developers trying to port RTS's over to consols, which is where i think a keyboard (and probably mouse too) would be most usefull. if just a single company can make it work, then the others would hop in, especially those who previousely only dealt in PC RTS's. then again, you have to find that ONE brave company or developer that would stic their neck out for it
