thanks to the BNP (effectively the nazis if they were pussies) the union flag can bee seen as some as a racist thing now...bit like the dixie flag can seem to some people. for that reason my opinion of the flag has become blurred. and it looks a bit messy...but that's just nit-picking.

I respect the American flag for what it truly stands for, freedom and the fight against oppression.

But right now, the Liberal Democrats and the non true Conservative Republicans are practically wiping their asses with it. The reason I say this is obvious, they are trying to control every aspect of our lives, they think that the majority of people want to be told what to do and have their hands held. If I didn't face hefty fines and jail time for tax evasion, I would withhold paying taxes until they remove the socialist health care that is coming down the pipes, because I'm not going to pay for other peoples' health care, because that is charity and I should have the right to be charitable or not.

If you want health care for people that don't have it, start a government health charity. If a person chooses to donate money into it, they get a big tax credit. For example, if I donate 100 dollars to the charity, I get 200 off my taxes, so basically I get to cut my tax payment by 100 dollars.
I like your idea,

If i would run short on money, I just "donate" 1000 dollars, and within a month i have a 100% profit!

But... you where joking right? (or at least sarcastic)

anyway: If I had just taken a dump, and there is nothing but a flag within reach...
No, I don't respect my flag or any patriotic symbol whatsoever of any country.
No, I am being 100% serious. I don't know where you get profit from, the person is still paying money in, no gain.

Let's take a larger example, let's say you know how much you're going to have to pay in taxes each year. You look at the amount for the year, if you pay exactly half of that amount into the government health charity, then you don't have to pay the rest of the taxes. Yes you will have more money because you didn't have to pay that other half of the taxes, but it isn't profit because it was your money that you earned to begin with, it just isn't being stolen by the government.

I say stolen, because they sure don't use the money to do things that benefit my life. Other than military protection and upholding the Constitution(though they tend to ignore it when it is convenient) and occasionally keeping the moral law(Stopping the thieves and killers, that sort of thing), the government does absolutely nothing for me. Though for the most part, that is really all that the government should do for me. Other than that, they should stay the hell away from me, because it is my private life and my home. I can do whatever the hell I want as long as I am not physically harming or stealing something from someone.

I respect what the flag represents, but if it served my purpose, I would wipe my arse with it.

I'm Irish and I respect my flag to the death. Not literally the flag but what it stands for. I don't let it touch the ground, i fold it properly and all that. A country's flag is a powerful symbol that can stir up STRONG emotions.

Hell no, why should I? My government gives me a reason to show respect I will. Until this day I have yet to see that.
American? Me too!
Unfortunately...
Yea it sux.... At least we have Obama now......
With the "..." I feel that you are probably joking. Because, if you really think things are better because Obama is in office, I will be putting my palm on my face.

Personal I don't respect my flag (American) much at all, because of all the horrible things America has done (starting war and stuff like that), but Obama makes me respect it a little (I think Obama's awesome).

I've got a great big one hanging over my window. I don't keep one outside anymore, as it is exposed to the elements and has a tendancy to look very sad and faded at the end of the year.

Personally, I think people get too stuck on the flag. It is, fundamentally, a piece of cloth with a pattern on it.
Yesh. This, as well.

It's an American flag.

I won't burn it, but I won't wash it until the dirt becomes real visible, either.

Besides, I'm not too proud of our country at the moment...

I don't care much for the flag. To me, its a piece of cloth with some symbolism, nothing more. I can understand restrictions of behavior with certain US flags, but I could care less about a random US flag. I'd be fine seeing one burned in protest, or used as a picnic blanket if it was needed.

The american flag is the most beautiful flag i value and i respect the symbol and what it represnts. It seems the previus generation messed up with the current gen. Because of the lack of nationalism.

Our flag is red, which I like, but it has a cross on it, which I dislike. Addtionally Denmark is a monarchy, and due to my republican and socialist beliefs, along with my atheism, I feel more respect for the tricolore than the Danish flag.

Silly story behind it too. Some knights known for wrapping their flags around artillery shells were fighting us in Estonia (we were there for booze and wenches). According to myth noted by a catholic the flag "fell down from heaven" and inspired us to win Estonia.

For whatever reason he chose to leave out the rational explaination.

I don't "respect" the swedish flag in any way whatsoever. however, I would never desecrate it, nor would I desecrate any other flag (even a nazi flag) because I consider it to be equal to burning a book (that's a bad thing btw).

I grew up in a military, conservative family. In front of every house we ever lived the American flag waved. It was a sacred icon of patriotism to America. Every week, we washed it. Every single one was to be treated with respect. Hand over heart, eyes to the flag during the national anthem. To desecrate one was an act of treason. I don't know about you guys, but do you respect and love your nation's flag?
As a Canadian, I like my flag, but I don't really think I could say I love it. I appreciate it's simple design and ability to stand out in a crowd. I also like it's representation of one of my favorite trees. As far as respect goes, I guess I respect my flag but i don't feel it would be an act of treason to desecrate it.

Over here we generally get a bit confused as to how you can put so much value to a flag.
Yup. While America goes teary eyed over the 'ol Red White and Blue, Canada kinda... Sidles away a few steps, then we mutter to ourselves...
[sub][sub]Whatta bunch of weirdos... It's just a piece of cloth...[/sub][/sub]
