Nope. I respect individual officers based on how much hell they go through and because they don't abuse their power, but being a cop does not automatically grant any more respect from me than just being a civvy.
This, but I do respect cops above "civvies" a little bit. Individual ones more, less, or indifferent based on what they have done.

From a philosofical point of view I love them because a society without law would be horrible. And without some sort of force to enforce those laws, even if said force is less than omnipotent, they may as wel not be there at all.

But I'd be lying if I said I have nothing but positive feelings for them. A consequence of growing up in an area where cops are so spineless you could fold them like a napkin.

How spineless you ask? Storytime!

Once upon a time my mother was riding her bike and some other guy on a bike, clearly drunk or high, swerved all the way across the road right into her. Than he yelled incomprehensibly at her for a bit and fled. My dad went to the police station to report the guy but the cop there basically told him he'd better not because the guy's friends may try to avenge him and they'd probably never arrest the guy anyway. My dad said he didn't care and insisted but the cop kept refusing to do his job and eventually my dad got mad and the cop threw him out of the station.

You want more? Alright!

My friend's uncle has a bar in town. Once, a barfight started and he called the police. They said they were on it but never showed up. A few hours after the fight ended and the bar was destroyed, they called back and asked if it was over. When my friend's uncle, somewhat confused, said yes they replied "Oh good than we can finally come over to note the damages."
Job wel done guys!

In my one dealing witht the local police I found them polite and helpful. Knowing what they (and military people) go through in training and their daily job, means that my default reaction is respect.

Yeah, I've only had like, two dealings with them, but both of those times were just them pulling over to see if I was ok because I was sitting on a bench in the middle of the night on a Saturday. Got a lift home both times. Nice blokes.

The cops in my town are pretty lazy, but at least they don't bother anyone. I'd hate to have to rely on them if someone tried to shoot up a school though.

I respect them about as much as I respect anyone else I don't know well. So basically, enough respect to be courteous to them, but not much more.

no. plain and simple, blanket statement. no. nobody deserves authority over anyone else, and that power can and WILL corrupt. i see cops as less than human. i see them as scum. think about this. when you're out driving and pass a cop, do you feel safer? or do you feel your heart skip a beat and jump for a minute? you check your speed, hope all your lights are working properly, hope he's having a good day and hope that there's not a single thing he could find wrong with your situation.

"people believe that the function of the police is to fight crime, and that's not true. the function of the police is social control, and protection of property."

EDIT: i was going to post a police brutality video, but there are too many, and they're too disturbing to even choose from. but look any of them up yourself and ask if that's something that deserves your respect. FTP.

I give them the same respect they give me, 9/10 times they will treat me as a criminal off the bat and I extend the courtesy.

But the rare few do have some manners and I have no problem with them, even tho near no real crimes get resolved, but they are awfully skilled on them speeding tickets.

I dish out resprect on a case by case basis, while in the end I do respect and trust the majority of cops I've met over the years, simply being a cop doesn't mean I respect you.
This guys got it.

Except for me it's more I like them till I have a reason to dislike them.

hell no. fuck da police! well, some of them actually are genuinely hardworking individuals who do there jobs sincerely for the betterment of the community and to actually HELP people and keep INNOCENT people SAFE. however, many of them are just power-tripped out d-bags that for the most parts do their jobs half-assedly and actually tend to avoid truly dangerous jobs in favor of busting people for negligible infractions so that they can make money off of all the tickets and not have to deal with the threat of being shot by actually bad and dangerous people. speaking of which, why do they have guns?!!! they should have at the very least rubber bullets, but preferably tazers of tranquilizers. cops in Japan don't even have any weapons aside from a nightstick! guns, that's just unnecessary brutality and can END SOMEONE'S LIFE, specifically a person they mistook as a threat but turned out to just be a misunderstanding...

Not really, i don't met any of them in person but the impression i get from their work in the area doesn't really paint them in a favourable light.

They tend to walk up to partygoers friday/saturday night promptly ask for identity, needlessly search people and generally act as if they were criminals. They also pour out any alcohol found and have a general pissy attitude.

Once an officer threatened to release the dogs on a crowd at a car-party where everyone was just having fun, listening to music and sipping beers (those who didn't drive).

Also, they seem to have a very large number of racists in the force. But i guess that's true of all policemen in the western world. In short: Assholes.
funny thing is, the most racist ones tend to black. seriously, no joke. they're racist against other black civilians.

It's extremely difficult to respect DC Metro Police and the Park Police. Government-funded thugs, is what we call 'em here.

I'm from the US. I respect the police (most of the time) probably because I'm neutral good like that. My brother on the other hand hates every single police officer who ever lived with a passion.

No. Not any more than I respect any given civilian, because often times, they are just civilians, only they're given weapons and the ability to lock you up. I have issues with people in authority, and the more authority they have, the less likely I am to trust them. Which isn't to say I refuse to trust any cops at all, just that I'll assume that any given cop is a douchebag until they can prove otherwise.

Cincinnati police? Fuck no. I abide by the laws, but this city's cops are, for the most part, pretty racist. This city as a whole has race issues, but when you throw the cops into the mix, and they're just as ignorant as any other prejudice person, respect will become a rarity. I know some police kind of personally, and yeah, they're okay, but I would definitely say that a majority of our "civic guardians" openly discriminate. What really burns my ass is that so many people give them a hint of a reason to. It's pretty fucked up. I'm sick of it. NOTHING should ever come down to the color of one's skin, but it does way too often around here.

You confuse correlation with causation. In other words, just because the crime rate is low in Japan doesn't mean that this is due to efficient policing. There are factors such as Japan being a homogeneous society which is relatively egalitarian, the enduring influence of Confucianism on Japanese society, and so forth. If you look at the facts of how the police actually operate in Japan, you see a force that is poorly trained using outmoded techniques and one that relies on forced confessions to get convictions.
