Do you 'self-insert' in videogames?

well of course I do, they're rpg's so lets get some role playing in here, well at least on the first play through.

the second play through I have a tendency to go with the complete opposite of me.

Hey, if you're going to delve into fantasy, may as well go all the way, right?
I usually do the same. If there's a character creation tool, I sometimes try to make something that looks like me, just to see if I can. But I never use it. I mean, it's a game; not being yourself is kinda the idea. ^^

Not in character design, but I like to make the choices I'd make in that situation, based on the situation, and not ingame rewards.
Unfortunately, this means I play these games only once, because doing another playthrough for the other choices feels like betrayal.

No, I don't bother doing it. It felt like a chore in Mass Effect, and even more so in Skyrim.

They could never get my likeness to my liking and I'd rather just jump into the game.

Quite often... appearance wise it doesn't really matter too much as more often than not the face you see the least is your own. Decision making wise - most certainly.

Sadly not many games have the option or allow for killing an antagonist very early when I recognize their obvious threat and motive.

Well of course! They're called RPGs for a reason. Though it's interesting in that instead of just putting in my thoughts I mix what I imagine they might be thinking in with mine. It allows more freedom to create a character that feels human. For example when faced with a dragon for the first time you it allows them to say something like "What....The...Fuck...." while still giving a justification for why they actually try to fight the ancient beast of death and destruction instead of running like a sensible person. Then there's the aspects like the romance and the justifications for various acts that might seem stupid to various outsiders.

Nope. I may have a character who I roleplay as being similar to me, or I may roleplay myself alongside my own character, but I don't create characters actually based on me. For example, in my current game of Oblivion my character is a young female Bosmer with red hair and a penchant for archery and sneak thieving. She's a good person at heart and is currently working as a Fighter and Mage, but is more than willing to get her hands dirty if the situation demands it (and is contemplating joining the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild). I, on the other hand, am a 22 year old male with dark hair and although I'm a good person, I'm a bit too good. If I was playing myself in Oblivion I wouldn't touch the 'evil' guilds with a bargepole and would probably have finished the main story quests by now without bothering to do half the side stuff.

That being said, I'm also imagining when I play that I myself am a fellow adventurer teamed up with the character I control, and that we as a pair are travelling across Cyrodiil on mutual jobs, simply to earn our living as mercenaries/Blade Knights xD

You know, in all my years of video gaming I've never even considered doing that. I've always played as myself. Might just give your method a shot for a change...

I'd like to, but unfortunately DOAX Beach Volleyball 2 didn't come with the groinal attachment I was hoping for.

(ho ho)
Har de har

OT: Nope, and never have. If we play games to get away from our daily lives, why would we want to act as much as ourselves?

For the first time through I'll make the character look unique enough but do the choices I think I'd do if I were them in that situation.
Second time or more around I'll do things fairly differently to what I'd do. Kind of makes me feel like a dick sometimes.

Most the time the first time through a game with choices I do the choices I would pick if I were in the scenario (generally good), but I never try to make the appearance my own.

I usually try to, especially on my first play through. This includes all games from Skyrim and Fallout to NBA 2k13 and Skate 3. I try to get my character to look like me and have the same name. I also try to choose responses that reflect how I would behave in a certain situation. The only difference I guess I have is in some sports games because I'm a forward in basketball but using my real height in 2k13 means I'm suited to being a guard.

One of my friends is a bit different about this, every sports game he makes himself a huge black guy (usually max height and massive muscles) and says he creates them to reflect him despite really being white and only about 5'10".

Well, last I checked Im not actually an argonian, so I guess I dont.

*sigh* one day...

(For a slightly more serious answer, I usually tend to go for the more exotic and less human choice. Humans are boring. Failing that, I usually just pick the default male face.)

I don't think I've ever 'self-inserted'. I have for sure role-played in a manner in which I would conduct myself given the situation, but; I've never tried to recreate my own likeness.

Why should I? It's a role playing game, I like to assume a new role. I find RPG's to be the best form of escapism, other than captivating books. If I wanted to be myself, I wouldn't play a game; I'd go outside - the graphics are amazing and the level of detail is unheard of!

Yes, this is why I was banned from my local game store....Boom...

Joking aside, it depends on the game. As somebody mentioned, most RPG games tend to be races from another planet so it makes it a bit hard to do so.
Games like SR though, in number 2 I did, in number 3 I went mental with the OTT customization options

Nah. I have go-to male and female alter egos that I stick to from game to game, but they are markedly diverse between universes and never share much in common with myself, other than a penchant to play the good guy.

No, not really.
I imagine being the character rather than the character being me. That's the most fundamental aspect of role playing.

Like many other people on here, I project all the time with anything I'm doing whether it's reading, playing, or watching, but I never try to make the character myself. I always want to make a unique character in the world of the game.
