do you think our attitude towards games generally reflect the VERY skewed "rating" systm?

to explain...it seems that a game can eather be "TEH BEST THING EVAR!!" or "ABSOLUT SHIT ON A STICK"

do we seem to lack any middle ground? as opoased to movies..which seem to have a little more raneg critically..before we decide they are crap and not worth out time? we seem to accept some movies just arnt as good as others..even enjoy that "so good its bad" aspect

but games...are different, perhaps its because overall games havnt quite rached their "gold" standard? the best is arguably on the same level as a decent action flick..

but then again games are not movies..nor should they be

or am I just asking the internet-hive-mind why its so mean? (IE: a stupid question)

[strike/] [small/] or is it jsut a Bioware thing? [/small] [/S]

I wouldn't know, I don't pay attention to game ratings.

I buy games that I think I'll like or on the recommendation of others and if I like them; good. If I don't, I'll just return it or trade it in later.

I only buy a few games each year so I need to make careful decisions, and because of this I rarely buy a game that I think is utter crap or "meh". Maybe if I played a lot more games I would be able to classify more of them as "meh" or "average" but when 90% of my library is made up of games that I love I can't really do that.

Firstly, given the quality of your usual posts, have you been drinking?

But ignoring that (something you can do) I do see this sort of polarisation from all sides of the entertainment industry, it does appear in gaming but is definitely not exclusive to that. It's something that I don't do, I know plenty of people that don't and I know plenty of people that do. It's annoying, but something we have to deal with. I find the best way is to simply ignore people that take such black and white stances on anything and everything. I admit it isn't the best way to deal with it, but it works for me. Probably because setting people on fire is illegal.

I honestly haven't paid any attention to game reviews in like ten years. There's very little objectivity anymore from user reviews, and the possibility of professional reviewers being bribed to give things good reviews makes them unreliable at best.

It's for that reason that I at least try to be objective when I tell friends about any given game, because I know I might be the last honest source of information they get before deciding whether or not to spend their hard-earned cash.

Really?

I can think of plenty of games that fall into the middle ground.

They're the ones that get labelled as "generic and "unremarkable".

I had to re-read my post for about ten minutes to get it looking like that. Six litres of homebrew lager in my living room seemed like a good idea eight o'clock ago...

Seriously though Vaulty, it's the capital letters that give it away. Admittedly, that wasn't actually serious at all, more slightly amusing to me, and no one else :(.

Fun unrelated fact, no matter how well you disinfect the plastic bottles, beer conditioned in a dandelion and burdock bottle will taste of dandelion and burdock.

I'm not sure anyone knows what Burdock is, it's some sort of marketing scam for old British beverages.

The point was expressed pretty well, I believe originally I expressed a response about all entertainment being tarnished by people with polarising opinions in an equally well manner.

However, how well I believe I express things at nearly 3AM while drinking is not indicative of how well these things are actually presented.

Yes, I think people overreact. I think people over exaggerate, I think we are hyperbolic creatures who are given an inch and take a mile.

I think we are the most wildly insane group of over reactors that history has ever seen, and that the GOD THEMSELVES are appalled by our behavior.

Actually Jim Sterling did an episode [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/4966-Hate-Out-Of-Ten] on that. If a game is decent or good, the fans will demand it's "TEH BEST THING EVAR!!". If a game is somewhat bad, haters will demand it's "ABSOLUT SHIT ON A STICK". But actually there lies the problem - you hear opinions from only two kinds of people and both are biased. There are mediocre games but nobody is shouting on the Internet (metaphorically...and literally) about it. People shout only for "AWESOMESAUCE!" or "LAMEZOR!" - the middle ground doesn't get many voices to support it.

Also, I assume it has something to do with people being really...well, eager or zealous (or zeelous? man, that's old now. I'm sorry) to express their negative opinion. Hatedom is always like that. As is fandom for that matter.

But don't those games fall under the bad category? Usually generic and unremarkable quickly become boring , and if a game isn't fun then well they are bad games , since the point of games are to have fun. Or maybe i'm the only one that sees it like that .

OT : i personally think there is no middle ground , either a game is good or bad , although what makes a game good or bad is purely subjective ( for the most part).
