"In the middle of the night, alone in a small room, on a day in summer where it rains, I played a scary game with the window open and the rain smashing down upon the ground outside.

The light gets turned off and I start playing..."

The effect was excellent, to say the least. I nearly sh*t my pants when I went down a shaft, turned on my flashlight only to see Alma crawling at me with incredible speed. That was scary.

So, do you turn the lights on or off when playing a scary/immersive game? And why do(n't) you do it?

It adds to the fun, I'll tell ya that.

I might leave a dim light on, but I haven't really played too many horror games.

hell yes, and i whop up the volume too. it seems that what you can hear can be more freaky than what you can see (look at the Playrooms an ShadowMan). makes it all the more fun

I don't have to many scary games (because I'm a tightfisted bastard, and money is a bit rare nowadays) but I do it sometimes with scary films.

I once watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in one of my friends attic. All it was was mounds of boxes, an 18 inch TV and five of us, all armed with copious amounts of Coke.

Never again.
That sounds so awesome! I did something similar watching 'Session 9' with some friends years ago. We had to take turns standing outside the bathroom when others went, we were that scared.

I do with any game, unless I'm playing and there's light out. The darkness adds some immersion points.

I usually do, though I leave my bed side lamp on. Partly because I want to see what I'm doing, mostly because I don't wish to shit myself.

Master Miller says its bad for you to play in the dark, and ever since he delivered that sage advice while I was crawling through a ventilation shaft, Ive never looked back. I always play with a lamp on.

It depends on the game (something like plants vs zombies no) but if I want to immerse myself in the game then yes.

Darkness be thy friend when playing games on a low grade TV such as I do.

So yes I do, but mostly to allow me to see, apart from when I play condemed. I played that with my elder brother watching (he 18 at the time) and he pleaded with be to turn the lights on but I didn't want to ruin the fun, having him there made it better however, fear is better with friends.

If I ever do that, I'll donate a thousand bucks to the games developers (not that they need it), but simply because it's a feature I couldn't imagine many achieving.

Yes at first, but then I freak myself out and have to turn them on again.

I always play games in the dark, mostly because of light glare on the screen. Even now with an HDTV which light glare doesn't even effect I still do it out of habit/immersion reasons.

Yeah, that's why I only do it when playing scary games. And not in every game.
