I type "An fps", because you only use "an" in front of words that begin with vowels, and you pronounce "FPS" as efff pee ess, as you explained in your post. However, if I say "First person shooter", I'll use "a".
I'll have a side order of what this gentleman just said, with a piece of apple pie.

This is a tough one. The rules actually apply to what the word sounds like it begins with, not the actual letter. FPS is pronounced as "eff pee ess" and therefore one could make a strong argument that it ought to be "an FPS". Likewise, since "First" starts with a distinct consonate sound it one would say "a first person shooter".

not to be a celebration defecator, but does this really matter that much?

i mean, shouldnt we just be thankful when a post is COHERENT instead of nitpicking internet grammar?

Reminds me of Elementary school.

"You put An before a word with a vowel at its beginning." to which I immediately responded with "An Unicorn?!!??"

Now keep in mind I was pretty much retarded in elementary. But it caused the teacher to give us a better "exceptions rule" in whatever grade it was.

Unrelated but lest we not forget nested acronyms.

PHP stands for PHP Hypertext Protocol now which stands for PHP Hypertext Protocol HyperText Protocol and PHP Hypertext Protocol Hypertext Protocol Hypertext Protocol. OH GOD THE HORROR OF AN INFINITE LOOP IN A PHP SCRIPT!

I say AN FPS because even though F isn't a vowel, it's pronounced as Eff, and E is a vowel.

I swap what I write around, but most of the time its "a" FPS... Seeing as I don't have any gamer friends I can't really just say FPS and it's a First Person Shooter not an First Person Shooter.

Unless we're talking about Frames Per Second here..

"an fps" but "A first person shooter"

"an rpg" but "a role playing game"

"an rts" but "a game of Starcraft" et cetera...

The An is placed in front of a vowel or a letter that begins with a vowel phonetically. F = eff or ef. Example:

A GPS
AN FPS
A ZPM
AN HRD
