Doctors Find Something... Uncomfortable Growing Up Man's Nose (NSFW)

On the plus side, his nose tooth didn't have cavities!

Science has established pretty firmly that there are a great many things that have no business being your nose, like fingers, plastic toys, or human teeth. Unfortunately, the latter was found in the nasal cavity of an unsuspecting Saudi Arabian 22-year old male when he paid a visit to his doctor. After suffering from nosebleeds once or twice a month for three years, this patient was fed up and wanted see what was causing them. The problem was a half-inch tooth, suspiciously growing well above the rest of his pearly whites.

According to the report this tooth was growing independently of those in his mouth, which were otherwise normal and well-aligned in case you were wondering. And apparently the phenomenon isn't that uncommon; extra teeth can be found in up to 3.9% of the population, a third of which grow upside-down and away from the mouth. Regardless, it's still incredibly bizarre to find those teeth in other body parts entirely.

"It's an unusual case of an extra tooth," said Dr. John Hellstein, a dentist and University of Iowa oral pathology professor who wasn't attached to the case, "certainly, the most impressive intranasal photo I think I've ever seen of one. I've never seen the tooth actually in there.

"We see several cases each year, but for it to have erupted up and through the nasal floor - that's unusual."

Thankfully, the tooth was able to be removed in one of the few nasal-based tooth extractions in human history, and the patient's nosebleeds fully subsided three months later. The American Journal of Case Reports concluded that early extraction is key to preventing nosebleeds and related complications.

In other words, if you suspect a tooth might be growing inside your nose, don't wait three years to find out. See your doctor right away.

Whew, I was seriously concerned with the NSFW label. Soooo glad it was just a tooth up the nose.

Haha, never know what to expect with names like this.

As someone who had a tooth grow put of my palate I can relate. I can still feel the scar where it used to be with my tongue.

Just don't make the mistake of looking up MRSA videos and/or pics, like I did one time.

It was one time too many.

NSFW? NSFL.

I actually had a "rogue tooth" growing up and away from my mouth, which was weird, but it dissolved before it reached my nasal cavity.

...dangit, if it kept going, I could have been on the Escapist News...

Can't believe this crap is what Escapist publishes now. I thought that this site was supposed to report on games, instead of being reddit but worse?
The Escapist covers a number of topics that are nerd/geek related outside of vidya games. Comics, TV and Movies and of course Ear, Nose and Throat medicine.

This sounds weird but the body can do stranger things with teeth. Enter new challenger: Teratoma!

This is evolution at work guys... behold the power of genes, bask in the might of biology and marvel at natures long term strategy for the survival of species.

Well, maybe it didn't work out so well in this case, but -this is- the general idea!

Well, if it's any consolation, he could have tried to eat food from his nose before the tooth extraction...

Yeah, you're right... Would have needed more then one tooth to truly pull that off... Plus, putting a toothbrush up your nose to brush your inner nose tooth doesn't sound like a good idea, anyway...

If anything, all this can exemplify is that evolution is chaotic and random and has nothing to do with progression of any sort. I'm sure this will be taken with the usual indignant zeal, but we need to do a lot more learning and advancing before we really understand and can explain what evolution really is and does.

Meh, I had at least 3 extra teeth behind my wisdom set as well as 2 sets of crossed teeth and one that had three roots instead of the normal two.

Yeah my dentist enjoys working on me, lots of stories for his party's.

The real question is What Games?

No seriously, when the local snark reviewer is pulling out ET for the Atari 2600 you have to realize that jack and shit is coming out of AAA at least.

Now I'm not really very prone to nosebleeds, I've had maybe 2 in my entire life, but if I was having nosebleeds at least twice a month, I'm not sure I would wait a full 3 years before I went to the doctor to try and find out what was causing them.

One of evolutions failed experiments I assume.

Evolution: Hey man how'd you fancy a tooth in your nose?
Human: Errrr . . . thanks of course but I would rather them in my jaw tbh.
Evolution: But they're really cool - cutting edge shit over here!
Human: *Sighs* . . . Ok if you really have to.
Evolution: Hells yeah! You won't regret this.
Human: ARRRRRRRRGGGGHH!

Actually, that first one isn't so-much "firmly established" in the science world as it is "open for debate".

Labelling it NSFW seems a bit extreme. Very interesting nevertheless.
Agreed. NSFW is the "there's nudity in here" warning, as-in you might get fired if your boss catches you looking at this page on a company computer. This article would more need a "graphic content" warning.

Ouch. Mind you, I can think of worse places, but that's still an uncomfortable place.
