Does Advertising work on you?

Yes.

But only because I work in the business and expect others to click on my not very subtle ads anyway [http://www.thethreers.co.uk].

Internet advertising does the best because of accessibility. Want to sell something? Have your potential customers access your trade in a click. Its like watching an ad on TV and being able to magically transport into the shop.

But when your a kid and you want to fit in, hell yes it does and nobody here can deny that, you can't say that you saw some toy commercial at some point and never went "cooool!".
Not me, I didn't buy shit when I was little. I think I bought those little caramel cubes, and I don't think those were advertised.
Wait, were they? I mean the must've at some time...
Of course not, when you're a kid you begged you parents to buy it for you.

Somewhere there is a marketing major laughing his ass off at everyone here saying that advertising doesn't work on them.

Of course advertising works on people, otherwise companies wouldn't spend millions on it now, would they? They don't necessarily need to get you to buy the product immediately for an ad to be successful- if an advert has had an effect on you because of it's super-thin, devilishly handsome, painfully confident models and made you think about your image then it's doing it's job. That's part of the advertiser's intention as well, to force you to compare yourself to the 'ordinary' people that appear in the adverts.

Keeping brand-awareness high, making people worry about money, appearance, social status etc, ensuring that people have never quite got enough of what they need, these are all part of advertiser's aims. It's sickening really, but unfortunately it does work on everyone whether they're aware of it or not.

Sadly, I'm too lazy at points to LOOK outta my way for new games. If a game has good advertisements, I at least waste 5 bucks renting the game.

Doesn't work on me in terms of me buying the product, but it does work for me in terms of possibly telling someone else about it. Very unlikely though. When it comes to the ads here on The Escapist, I never click on something with unreasonable cleavage, which happens to be nearly everything.
There IS no unreasonable cleavage, don't be sacrilegious! Sorry, a little male piggyness took me over for a moment.

I don't often notice the ads, but yes, if the woman is displaying mounds of flesh that should logically be contained and concealed beneath armor (or clothing, etc.) I have to admit I perceive the product as second rate, else it wouldn't be trying to lure me with boobage. (And if it's combined with anime I stay away from the product completely - those anime boob-fairies so often used in games freak me out.) I don't care for the hyper-inflated, post-surgery transsexual Pam Anderson look anyway, and if that's what the game producers choose to put out front (so to speak) then I assume that's all they have to offer. Bare muscular lady thighs, on the other hand, are clearly an indication of a superior product...

The idea with boobage in advertising came to the forefront recently when Keira Knightly, a very thin 'A' cup waif, was enhanced to a 'C' cup for the advertising posters for her new movie and protested the posters. This happens with 'B' cup girls as well, and sometimes even with 'C' cup ladies. It is truly amazing that Hollywood thinks a woman is sexy enough to play a given part, but needs to be bustier in order to advertise the movie.

On the larger issue, I'm sure advertising works on me to some degree, but like probably most Internet users I've grown very good at not even noticing the adverts.

Advertising, when it comes to games, generally tends to make me think that the game is over-hyped and mainstream, and therefore probably crap. When it comes to things like snacks, brands of drinks etc. I am usually subconsciously influenced by them and will prefer a brand I have seen advertised to one I haven't. That said, I do make a conscious effort to not be influenced or even look at advertising when I see it.

Somewhat. Sometimes if a commercial on TV makes me laugh or just blows me away, i tend to lean towards buying it as sort of a reward for making a good commercial.:p

And may I add that the Mabinogi advert freaks me out.

EDIT: And that "Your goddess awaits" thing arrests me in mid-click for a moment. But since I can't actually read the fancy script of the game or whatever, I guess it doesn't actually work on me.

Only if they're sidebars and don't suck.

If I'm playing a game and I have to wait through 40 seconds of advertising I will go out of my way to not pay attention because that's rude and obnoxious.

If it piques my interest, I'll click on it. Very few things do, though. I can count the number of times I've actually followed an advert link on one hand.

I'd say no, but since brand recognition is one of the goals of advertising, it really does work. The times i bought something because of an add online has yet to happen though.

It works on me to a degree, if it is appealing to me (blood, gore, violence, explosions, etc.) then i will take a look at it, if the product intrigues me past that point ill usually either look it up, or plan to (but forget.)

The only time I can think of was testing EVE online after seeing on every page of escapist. (The ads playing on this page right now on my screen.)
