Does anyone actually call themselves 'hipsters'?

Well, given that the term hipster seems to be predominately used as a pejorative I would doubt there are that many people clamouring to label themselves as such and of course those who actually act like the stereotypical hipster would likely reject labels of any sort. I don't think I've really encountered anyone who would match the description of the stereotypical supercilious shithead hipster, though since I'm currently at uni I do see quite a few people who's attire might be characterised as hipster-ish (it's hyphonated, that makes it a word). But knowing nothing else about them other than what variety of cloth they like to ensconce themselves in, I think it only fair to refrain from passing judgement.

Anyway, as far as I can see, being a 'hipster' more or less involves being opposed to mainstream culture and embracing lesser known or underground media, as well as often being in a state of being permanently ironic about everything. It is important to note that this is generally done for the sake of status rather than an actual deep enjoyment of these activities, just as much of the mainstream culture they reject is rejected solely for the sake of it being mainstream.

Unfortunately, it's a meaningless word nowadays, as most people who are labelled 'hipsters' on things like internet forums just tend to be people with a contrary opinion to what is popular, often for valid reasons. So, someone who doesn't like Skyrim may be labelled a hipster, because people assume they don't like it for the sake of being 'different' rather than actually finding the game flawed.

Also if they have ever worn glasses even though they have perfect vision, they are both a hipster and the most despicable person in the world.

This is something I've been guilty of doing once or twice actually, because I look damn good in glasses. But I don't think that makes me the most despicable person in the world.

The term hipster has been around forever. It originally meant a white kid in the 40's who liked to emulate and listen to black jazz musicians. It's evolved to apply to anyone who tries to be outside the mainstream.

You really should look up the definitions of the words you use in sentences. Irony is when something is used in a context completely opposite it's intended purpose. For example, it's ironic that the largest group of fans of MLP is actually adult men. Basically, when you choose to like something ironically, you are choosing to like it because liking it means you're different, not because of any properties the thing itself possesses. (note the distinction between liking something ironically, and your liking something being ironic.)

I don't waste my time wrapping my head around all the new labels the kids give themselves these days. Back in my day we had cool people, nerds, athletes and Hitler! Those were our labels!

OT: A hipster used to be a person who was substantially different from the norm, but didn't dwell on it. Nowadays, it's people who are different for the sake of being different, in the same way as a whole bunch of other people.

That's the weird thing about hipsters; they claim to be non-conformist and not caring about what other people think, when actually it's like they care about those sorts of things more than anyone.

And no I don't think anyone calls themselves hipsters, at least not seriously. It's used as an insult by most people.

The idiot at my school who walks around with huge headphones around his neck but never listens to them. He does more attention whoring things but that is the worst.

OP: A hipster is someone who dislikes something because it is popular, as in the very fact that it is popular makes it not worth their time, even if they liked it before. They tend to be the people who claim that Bands, artists, actors etc have "sold out" because they created something that because popular and makes them money. They are the people who choose their clothes not because they like how it looks but because other people don't wear them.

Hipsters like obscure/"indie" (whatever that means thease days) stuff and probably take an unusual amoutn of pride in how obscure their tastes are

due to some Idea that obscurity/"being indie" is a measure for quality

when I think about it I can tend to be a music hipter...I actually get put off music if its too "popular" and I like "kind of" obscure stuff..also stuff that most people hate (electronic/rap)

I assume hipsters are similar to indie fans given similar clothing styles and favoured music genres but with the arrogance and snobbery turned up to 11. That or someone who buys all their clothes from top man, though I imagine they are just poser types.
