If the shotguns had their true range - everyone on multiplayer would use them. there are far more close encounters than long encounters and with the realistic power and range of a shotgun - EVERYONE would use one.

Most games need to have the shotgun ranges increased.

Hell, I remember the shotgun from Halo 1, that thing had a decent range for a game.

The other people have mentioned about the range so I'll say something else. In Call of Duty, they have the recoil and sound effect of a BB gun. Seriously, the shot is about as loud as your footsteps, and the recoil is like a new born baby punching your shoulder.

Yeah it always pissed me off that the double barrel fails to kill people further away then 10 feet in CoD WaW. The sawed off chunkage makes up for it though.

I think Fallout 3 did pretty okay with this. Not sure about the spread, but I was fairly satisfied with the range on it.
i agree fallout 3 got me started on shotguns but CoD4 just made the shotgun children friendly
Because VATS mode didn't quite make the shotgun children friendly.
quite true and i thought it had a great range and clip size

Yeah, the shotgun does tend to be portrayed poorly in most games. However, I think it is intended to be like this. If you had a gun that could tear a chunk out of someone from half a map away, why would you use anything else? For another example, Halo's turret. It has three barrels that rotate when you fire. In real life, these rotating barrel guns (can't think of what they are called, maybe miniguns?) have a ridiculously high rate of fire (think of the miniguns on helicopters) due to the fact that the gun barrels can cool themselves while being rotated. Yet in Halo and many other games with this kind of gun, it seems that the gun shoots slower than the Battle Rifle! The developers intentionally cut down on the power of these turrets and of the shotgun to prevent people running around with a enormously overpowered gun and ruining the game for everyone.

Well, now that you mention it, the Force of Nature in Team Fortress 2 can be a real pain...

I am not talking about the kid who pops out of no where and blast you with a shotgun and gets a cheap kill, i'm talking about how the developers fuck the shotgun up. It seems that everyone thinks that shotguns can only go 4 ft before the lead BB's just disappear. Plus all of them are usually pump shotguns and there are hardly any semi-automatics. THis just makes me made because i actually shoot and go hunting in real life and know the rang of them.
It just pisses me off.
the thing is, if they acually made the shotguns kill at the right range then you could pretty much snipe with them, getting a one hit kill weather your 2 ft away or 200 ft away.

Well, the issue is that they are trying to build weapons for specialty purposes and the Shotgun being limited to that close a range might not be realistic, but it makes sense for purposes of game design.

It should be noted that Shotguns are pretty effective weapons, one of the comments I remember about "Terminator Salvataion" (I think it was in an "EZ Achievements" video for XBL) was that the Shotgun was not limited by range so there was no real reason to use anything else. In a way that sort of illustrate the issue.

Truthfully, there is a logic to game design that is rapidly moving away from reality. Especially given conventions like "health" and "hit points". I think Assault Rifles get it worse than Shotguns to be honest, because like 99% of the time when I play shooters (which is rare, I'm not a big fan of the genere) it seems like Assault Rifles are firing plastic BBs since they fire quickly but do almost no damage, and your opponents are able to move around making it difficult to keep the stream of bullets focused on them. I find this MORE ridiculous than shotguns being so limited in range.

Well to be fair it's not like a game with realistic gunplay at all would be much fun since you would be killed/crippled after one shot from anything.

Didn't you know? All game devs have NEVER ACTUALLY FIRED ONE IN REAL LIFE.

And the effective range of a shotgun IRL is 8 inches, right?

I want to know why shotguns can hit a locust once and all he does in cringe, but the second time he explodes in to a million pieces.

Shotguns have never been really known for their range, but I agree with you. They go a bit short in some games.
