Does anyone have any book recommendations for a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

I'm a bit bored on my summer break, and a good zany comedy book might brush away those summer blues.

I think the Discworld books by Terry Pratchet should be right up your alley, if you haven't read them already.

The Discworld books by Terry Pratchett are good. I especially like the Vimes books myself. Oh and the Thursday Next novels and Nursery Crime novels by Jasper Fforde are fun too!

EDIT: Dammit, ninja'd! *shakes fist*

Thanks, but I've already read the Diskworlds. I agree, they were very good. But I will check out the other books you recommended. Thanks again!

Try Mogworld by Yahtzee. It reminds me more of Discworld, but the Discworld reminds me of H2G2, so it's indirectly linked, I suppose.

Ugh, there was another book I read that stuck me a pure randomness similar to H2G2. But I can't remember the name or the author. I seem to recall it being called Goblin Farm but I can't find anything by that name online, so it might be a variation of it. Or something unrelated...

Well, theres always Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency, also by Douglas Adams, if you have'nt read it already. More Douglas Adams is always better.

Give Three Men in a Boat a shot. It's a clever little holiday comedy, starring three stupid men, one dog and the river Thames. It's rather old, but it has aged very well. It's easy to read and it's timeless enough to not cause a time clash. It's a beloved classic for a reason, give it a shot and find out why.

Hmm, I wouldn't call it similar to H2G2, however, yes it's good. One of my favourite books, in fact. I'd also vouch for Jerome K. Jerome's other short stories.

Starship Titanic is pretty fun:

Terry Jones wrote it, he of Python fame, but it was fully endorsed by Adams, and Jones even wrote is on the condition that be allowed to do so in the nude.

You could aslo try Adam's Dirk Gently books (of which there are two: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul). It's about a psychic fat man who solves crimes, really a fun read all round. :3

If you wanted something a bit zany, The Cyberiad by Stanislaw Lem. Same guy that wrote Solaris, only with robot wizards and knights and dragons and tyrants and comedey and complex mathematical ideas. Unless you're into math (which I wasn't) you won't understand a hoot of the mathematical in jokes, but it's still ridiculously funny.

Since everyone else is giving the obligatory Discworld recommendation, I might as well throw something different in:

This book. This is a good book.

You could try John Kennedy Tooles "A Confederacy of Dunces."

It's got quite a few chuckles and it's a really good book.

Ooh, Lem had slipped out of my mind, thanks for reminding me :) I'd also suggest the short stories with Ijon Tichy - I think there was a collection of them called the Star Diaries or something to that effect.

Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better than Life are both pretty decent.
(Both are Red Dwarf books, but don't require being into the series to be enjoyed.)

There's also Good Omens, which I rather liked.

I'll go and throw out "Another Roadside Attraction" by Tom Robbins. Really offbeat comedy writing that gets you thinking about your life values, however, probably not if you are extremely religious. Then it may come off as offensive lol

?This did not annoy Amanda for it had long been her theory that human beings were invented by water as a device for transporting itself from one place to another.?

If you're getting into Vonnegut, I'd recommend Breakfast of Champions or Slaughterhouse-Five first. They're a bit easier to start with.

Sirens of Titan was also cool, if a bit out there.

In a more Fantasy tip, the Enchanted Forest Chronicles [http://www.amazon.com/The-Enchanted-Forest-Chronicles-Searching/dp/0152050523] by Patricia C Wrede [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_C._Wrede] is a 4 book cycle that has the same sarcastic narrative that Douglas Adams used in his books. They are 'young adult' and very easy to read although I probably haven't read the series in 12 years so it's a bit fuzzy.
