Try Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut (fuck it, read anything by Kurt Vonnegut). It's wildly funny but it's also quite clever, if a bit abstract.
Bill Bryson is probably a good bet, not really the same subject matter, but he's funny as hell. A Short History of Nearly Everything is great if you still want something sciencey, but The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is my favourite. It's his memoirs of being a child in the 50's, it's probably the most cheerful book ever. What I really love about it is that he frequently presents things through his eyes as a child, with his alter-ego, The Thunderbolt Kid, and fantasizing about vapourizing annoying people. It's not so much zany, but it's funny, cheerful and relaxed.
