Does dyslexia exist?

Of course it exists. I have seen it with my own eyes. I have a friend who will write out and essay or a letter, and about half the words have mixed up letters, or are spelled with no regard to phonetics, and she really has no idea she is spelling it wrong.

One of my favorite college professors has dyslexia, her niece apparently has it worse but is all the more intelligent. In particular she had severe trouble with left and right. She could read and spell as good as anyone else; better grammar than most people on these boards.

Strange, I can read and write pretty well, but I honestly don't know my left and right by heart.

I can tell if I've recently thought about it, but when someone catches me off guard and tells me to look left or right, I usually guess wrong. Dx

Not to sure. I've been known to make mistakes that can be taken for "dyslexia", but most of the time it's been me just being careless.

No. It doesn't. People who are said to be afflicted with this blame the inability to read on the fact that their brain doesn't work very well. In all actuality, It's just them not paying attention. If ou claim to be dyslexic Slap yourself in the face every morning. Thn pick up a book and don't put it down until you finish a chapter. epeat until you can fluently read. It's that easy. Sheer application of will and focus gets everything done.

When you see someone with crippled or no legs it?s easy to imagine why they may have trouble walking. Something less visible is harder to relate to but that doesn?t mean the problem doesn?t exist. The human body is quite prone to faults, eye problems are incredibly common for instance, and there are a lot of people with a verity of disabilities. The brain is not some fortress were nothing wrong could ever possibly happen.

I think it does but 99% of the people who claim to have it are just too lazy to learn proper grammar and spelling.

My exact belief. I've met a lot of 'dyslexic' people that use it as an excuse whenever they can't spell, but I've witnessed them first hand write perfectly on an important letter, like a job or college application.

I'm dyslexic and its a complicated condition, I have good days and bad days, I can find myself being able to spell the most complicated words yet some days I can't spell simple 4 letter words I just have a mental block. I hope you see things differently now because its exactly what you described that gives people the wrong impression of dyslexia.

Not really, see, it's not that it's 'on and off days', it is literally they are great when it's important and then just don't even try when it's on msn or texting. I'm not saying that dyslexia doesn't exist, nor is who I quoted, and I'm not saying that your condition doesn't exist, as I'm sure it does, it's just clear that there are a lot of people that claim to have it and don't really.

I can understand that people lie and to be honest that pisses off people who are genuinly Dyslexic such as myself as well as people such as yourself who don't have the condition.

I merely meant ADD and ADHD are over diagnosed(only in males though, females it may be under-diagnosed). From what I can gather from observation is that people don't know the difference between being ADHD and being six. I know it is a real condition like dyslexia and aspergers(since that was mentioned earlier). I agree with everything you said(except maybe the Mayflower thing but that is neither here nor there).

dyslexia most certainly does exist.. my lil sister was diagnosed with it .. kinda tells me its real

It enrages me that even now, with all of the hard work put into raising awareness, people still have a habit of saying people are "making it up". I've experienced it myself as a "sufferer" (hate that term) of aspergers syndrome.

Though, I will admit, every other socially anxious nerd on the internet does try to self diagnose it.

My apologies. On re-reading the post, I see that I read a bit too much into it. Please write it off to sensitivity on the subject. I've had more than a few people accuse me of "faking" an illness, and saying it's not real, it tends to get a body twitchy. I took the post COMPLETELY incorrectly, and stand corrected.

An example that strikes me is from english forums where many of the users don't have english as their first language. Maybe not at all. And yes there are large parts of the world where english is not a regular subject in school. A few example are Northern Africa (French and Arabic) and large parts of Eastern Europe (local language and Russian). So, we should try and take a breather before calling out the spelling of others. They might not have learned the language properly, just started learning it or maybe even trying to learn it on their own.
