Does FF14 still exist.

I remember that when FF14 launched there was all kinda of uproar about it being unfinnished. To the point that even a year after it's release Squarenix had yet to charge any subscription fee. After that I've heard nothing of the game. Did Squarenix finally give up on the game or are they still trying to make it work?

Here's a checkpoint from about a year ago that talks about it.

Yes they're still trying to make it work. They're also charging subscription fees now, even though the fabled 2.0 patch and PS3 release are still at an unknown point in the future.

I have some friends who play it, but they all began playing the game after leaving Final Fantasy 11. 14 was sort of the "spiritual upgrade" of 11, the races you can play as a character are very similar. And this was done intentionally to bring over 11 players. I haven't played it myself, haven't had the money or time to play an MMO.

Though I do think it is interesting that they seem to update 11 a lot more than 14. I'm not sure if 11 is continuing to grow or if it's fading, but they announced another expansion not long ago, so apparently Square still sees some profit in it.

I've played it on and off during the free period (gave up when it first came out), i like it, it definatly has roots from 11 (races) but it just lacks that something that 11 does.

The things it's really missing (or was the last time i played it) was the lack of missions and quests, there were very few, where with 11 (granted its been out for years) has loads even though some of them are boring, it gives you something to do when you not leveling. Theres also the fact that the combat is a weird realtime style of gameplay, a part of me wishes it was more like 11, i put a year into that game and never got bored (were talking all those gameplay hours added up, not just i played it for a year).

I've been thinking about going back to 11 but i don't like alot of the changes which occured after the wings of the goddess expansion, going off what someone told me the leveling is now very dependant on the dlc addon after the last expansion.

The one thing i absolutly love about both the mmo's is that there very pretty, I don't think theres any other mmo's which compete there but thats one of Final Fantasy traits, there always very pretty for their time. Overall i'm still hoping that 14 will get better as i really like it...it just lacks the content to keep me interested.

It's a lot better now, but it's still fairly niche as an MMORPG because of the questionable mechanics and patience required. A lot has changed since its launch, some of the more notable things include the implementation of grand companies which mainly provide more unique quests and opportunities, such as the ability to ride a Chocobo, kill Ifrit, obtain unique gear etc. More end-game content has been added also such as the aforementioned Ifrit raid as well as some others. The drop rates are pretty bad but the items more than make up for it, they'll be gone after the release of 2.0 too so there's plenty of incentive to play if you're sentimental. Combat has been changed and is more dynamic now, skills can be chained and have unique positioning requirements for bonus effects, such as a slowing debuff if executed from behind. There are also advanced jobs now which are pretty interesting and give awesome looking gear. Levequests have changed too, you now get 8 every 12 hours and they can be stacked to 99, it used to be 8 every 48 hours (I think) and they didn't stack at all, so levelling is much easier and you can get a decent amount of money from doing so.

There's other stuff as well but I can't think of it off the top of my head, my subscription ran out about a month ago. In its current state FFXIV is pretty good, the main thing I love is how long it takes to level and how the game concerns itself with the journey and progression of the player and not some end-game goal. 2.0 is looking to change a lot of things when its likely implemented later this year, I'd definitely check back then if you're not liking what it's like now. I bought FFXIV off Amazon for like £5 with a free month and it's held my attention much longer than I anticipated.
