Does gender matter on the internet?

As the title says, really.

There is a deeply ingrained cultural oddity online that can be summarised in one capitalised phrase - "OMG GIRLS ON TEH INTERNETZ!!!1!"

From this you can gather that some members of the fairer sex do indeed make use of the web from time to time. But somehow they are almost always met with scorn, derision, or calls for nude photos. And then more scorn.

C'mon guys, really? When did the internet become 'no girls allowed'? You can't even catch cooties over a wi-fi network!

Discussiony stuff - Is your opinion of individuals in the anonymous mass of web users influenced by their gender?
Do you automatically pay more attention to posts made by members of the opposite sex (or whichever gender it is you're interested in)?
Do you look for methods to make them pay more attention to you?
Do you pour scorn on them for chromosomal differences?
Are you more complimentary towards them?

Do you take the view that, given the anonymity of the internet, the gender of anyone you're communicating with is largely irrelevant?
Or do you believe that gender is an inherent part of identity, and despite the faceless, nameless state in which we exist here, it is still a sufficiently integral element that it should affect perception of the user?

[sub]Apologies for the largely male bias of this thread, however it frequently seems that the population of the internet is predominantly male. The escapist's population is, certainly[/sub]

EDIT: The wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the internet allows you to assume whatever gender you wish. This is the main reasoning for my logic - if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck, it might still be a pigeon.

EDIT 2: Edited to slightly remove bias and add clarity. I hope.

Not really. I mean if I need a answer to be influenced from the touch of a women then yeah sure, I'll pay notice. But otherwise I don't need to gasp and be in awe that OMG! GIRLZ ON THE WEB!
Does it matter? nahhh the internet is just one big old place that anyone can add to. guys or girls

so yeah, I guess that's my veiw. Besides, some people might lie about their gender. It'll seem kinda weird if you try and impress them to only find out later it's some 42 year old guy named bubba who's friends in prison called him "ramrod"

Is your opinion of individuals in the anonymous mass of web users influenced by their gender?

Yes, as it allows me to see where they are coming from better. If they were "genderless", their opinion would be influenced by that. As such, their gender influences their opinion on certain topics.

Do you automatically pay more attention to posts made by members of the opposite sex (or whichever gender it is you're interested in)?
No, I do not.

Do you look for methods to make them pay more attention to you?
Nope.

Do you pour scorn on them for chromosomal differences?
Nope.

Do you take the view that, given the anonymity of the internet, the gender of anyone you're communicating with is largely irrelevant?
It still matters, as it influences how they view certain topics.

THERE'S GIRLS ON THE INTERNET?!!?! WHERE?!?!

*Ehem* - Seriously though, to answer your questions:

  • No
    No
    No
    No
And yes.

Why? Well I think it's largely due to the fact that I have had several girlfriends and sex on numerous occasions during my lifetime.

How is this relevant, you ask? Well since the above is my experience I don't view females as these mysterious creatures I don't know how to interact with.

I think when you see a post like that what I stated up top, it's mainly due to ignorance and a hope of being noticed by the opposite sex.

The Internet:
Where
Men are Men,
Women are Men
And kids are FBI agents
Just joking. I don't really care about gender, though that may also have something to do with the fact that most of my friends are girls, and a fair few of 'em play video games to some extent. Though I am definitely more involved with video games than they would be. Generally, I just don't even think about gender. It makes it much easier to work with.

I have boobs.

Will this make you pay more attention to me? If you're lucky I'll send you pictures.

Just kidding, I'm a dude.

No gender shouldn't matter all but it does. When guys see a girl it never fails to see a guy to haul ass to her.

I honestly stopped giving a fuck a while ago. And considering that most of the girls I know on the internet are either: a) dudes or b) psychotic, I just don't care.

In the end, as long as everyone is a rational person and not crazy, I'm cool with it.

No to me "girlz" are the same on the net as in person, I dont get why some guys pine to hear them speak in games if they find out there is a girl amongst us. But I do hate the type of girls that pray on the guys that are bewildered and infatuated by a girl in the lobby, forum, etc!

I thought it was an automatically accepted rule that all girls on the internet are actually men.

Should it matter, no. Does it matter, unfortunately yes.

Example: look how females are treated on xbox live... and on many discussion forums.

Not particularly. If someone's a good person, they're a good person.

Unfortunately, gender is treated so importantly on the internet. The idea of a girl here is fucking nuts to some people.

Spammed with friend requests is one response.
More often, however, you get people going out of their way to troll any woman who dares use a microphone, be it by team killing them repeatedly, excessive teabagging, or just screaming insults down a mic. xbox live is a fun and accepting place!

I always assume people are male until proven otherwise. And it doesn't really matter to me, what gender someone is. If they're discussing their significant other, or their menstrual cycle, then yeah, it does have some importance, but other than that I don't care.

I can't pay more attention to people of the opposite sex online - most of the internet is made up of guys anyway. If I wanted them to pay more attention to me, that'd be too easy, but I don't really like using my gender as a selling point or anything. I'd rather people talked to me because they liked me for who I am, rather than for being a girl. Most people don't actually know I'm female until they check my profile, and I've been mistaken for a guy many times. Don't mind it too much. I just correct them and go on my merry way.

Not really. Honestly, I kind of assume that most "girls" on the internet are guys pretending. Not all, but a lot of them. Yes, I know, I'm a judgmental assuming muppet, or something.

It doesn't matter at all, and I sincerely hope the whole Macho dick waving is just another case of the minority of idiots being the loudest. I'm sure a lot of guys don't really care at all.

That said, I think a lot of people anyway would sunconsciously give a female more attention, but that could just be because of standing out. Whilst women are far from rare online, there's still noticeably fewer, and maybe people would like to see if they have a different view because of that? I don't know.

Well, yeah, basically. Glad you said it.

It would be nice if it didn't. But so long as there are still attention whores and pimply-faced basement dwellers who don't know how to talk to the opposite sex yet, gender remains an issue.

I've seen it for long enough now and it is boring. And every time someone goes "hurr hurr there are no girls on the internet/playing games" I label them as one of life's losers (I see way way more or these than I do attention whores, although both are pathetic).
