Genre fusion. Basically, something made by a director or group of people who like genre A and genre B, and therefore think that combining the two would be awesome. I'd like to hear about your experiences with such things, in any medium, whether you thought they were awesome or not, and if they count towards anything in your entertainment decision-making process.

Example: Romantic comedy + action + endless stream of pop-culture references = Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World = incredibly awesome movie. In my opinion, anyway.

Example 2: Rap + rock instruments + video game music = Duane and Brando.

(Naturally, you don't have to present your anecdotes like that!)

ehhh...usually doesn't. I like my genres like I like my juice. Pure and undiluted.

At least in games.

There are exceptions, though, of course. Like Borderlands, the FPS/RPG.

With movies, I don't mind genre blending too much. As long as one of the two genres is comedy.

I like it. It mixes things up, keeps entertainment fresh. A great example I can think of is Firefly, being a sci-fi western. I thought it worked well on both fronts, and make for a very unique show. And I thought genre-bending was one of the things that made Super 8 work really well. It was a monster movie, but grounded in a realistic family drama.

It can, if the product has any quality. I'm not too hung up on genres really, to me they are descriptive and not restrictive.

Fusion is awesome.

Any mix can be at least interesting if it's pulled off well. Folk metal and folk punk are two things I never expected to be any good, and now they're two of my favorite little subgenera.

As far as games go, I love those that either defy genre or are an interesting and well pulled off mix. There's a dearth of interesting mixes in video games. RPG and RTS seems like they'd be perfect to mix but no one has ever done it with enough elements of both to be satisfying.

Genre-fusing is the best, if only because it's less common, therefore more refreshing.

I really like games that don't bother to fit themselves into a genre. Games like X-com and Dungeon Keeper. It's as if they forgot about genre when they made the games, and they were the better for it.

Depends on how well it's done.

Borderlands makes for a well done and fun FPS/RPG hybrid, and Sanctum's FPS/Tower Defense hybridization is nothing short of awesome.

Oh, and let's not forget Knights in the nightmare and it's Strategy game/Bullet hell mashup. That game was balls to the wall insane.

So yeah, as long as they do a good job of it, I love hybrid games. It allows for some crazy stuff you might not normally see.
