If I may jam my filthy oar in to add another perspective to this final point; main stream media is disproportionately governed by men, AND disproportionately affected by traditionalist and/or reactionary people from the religious/right wing (as Katatori-kun suggested simply because these are the kind of people more likely to complain and thus have a disproportionately large voice in these matters) who still view the female form as any and all of these things; shameful to be sexualised, shameful to be displayed in any form, only capable of being sexual and nothing else, the 'innocent virginal special flower' type mindset where 'the fairer sex' must be protected from exploitation due to their weak vulnerability, or any other, similar, attitudes I've missed out.

The differences, then, are in the way society (or, at least, THESE people's society) portrays the different genders' bodies. Male is powerful and proud (which, in the age of cynicism has translated to humorous), and thus able to be portrayed in many different ways, whether sexual or not. Female is fragile, beautiful and intimately sexual, and thus can only be portrayed in such a way.

May I also add that all of these are trends that I would very much like to see the end of (and not just because it might make female nudity more acceptable wink-wink) but because I think it's unfair for there to be such a double-standard. In a broader societal context, I know many girls and just about all of them would love to be able to go completely shirtless in public like males can if it's hot or just because tops and bras are uncomfortable.

I have to say I agree with Gorfias, and this is a trend which I first noticed in the movie 'Eurotrip' (a movie I really like btw) where there's an entire beach full of naked men showing full frontal nudity with everything hanging out for long enough to get more of a look than I (as a heterosexual male) ever want to have again. This is at a nude beach, mentioned at least twice in that section, and when they give a shot of the female part of this famous nude beach containing 'Europe's most nubile exhibitionists' they're all topless with underwear on with not one exception. The reason I find this so jarring, and more indicative of a trend than any single movie really should be, is how much they play up that it'll be a nude beach filled with exhibitionist females, and then even in the 'unrated' version they shirk showing proper nudity, which they blatantly did for males, clearly opening up a plot hole and breaking the element they've gone so far to characterise for this sole reason.

Anyway, as per usual, my post has ended up roughly 8 times as large as I originally intended, so that's my two cents and congratulations to everybody who read all the way to here. To those TL;DR, don't worry I probably would have done the same

depending on individual anatomy, stance, and angle of view, you can see a bit of the female genitalia from behind... if what I've seen is to be believed; obviously it's much easier to male genitalia from behind, but you didn't in this case/these cases, did you? as an aside, I think one of the reasons the butt is typically not shown (and particularly why it's not shown in live action but is almost a standard of cartoon comedy) is the hair that can grow out of it

i have to assume from what i have seen girls do enjoy looking at fit shirtless guys so what really is the differce between male and female chests? why do boobs get blurred but dudes can go shirtless at the drop of a hat.

we should fight for equality for women to be able to show their boobs like guys can show their chests.

It actually all depends on why the naked scene was made.
In a male nude scene, it either to show some characteristics of the character, or for a humorous reason. Rarely "because, fuck you!" and even rarer in a sexual way.
When a female is nude, it's almost always in a sexual/erotic way. I don't remember the last movie where I saw a naked women for some other reason than a sexual.

A naked male butt will be rated the same as a female, as long as it is in the same context.

I'm for public breast feeding. I know in Europe women can go topless without social disrupion. More power to them.

Male nudity is weird. Sometimes it doesn't count, and sometimes it's all that counts.

Like on video streaming sites that permit nudity but no sex (Dailymotion, for example), you can see fully naked women without effort, but male genitals are right out.

So the reason male butts may get more of a pass than female butts is because male butts are often seen as being humorous as opposed to sexual.

That pretty much sums it up right there. The MPAA is mostly concerned with the sexual depiction, rather than the humorous depiction. That's why "Observe and Report" got an R rating as opposed to NC-17, despite having graphic, prolonged full-frontal male nudity.

As for perception, well yes men are the horndogs you really can't get past that fact.
There was a study years back on this and it showed that women get the same horny hormonal state as men only one or two days per month, while men are on 24/7.
So yes women will get the hots for a rockin body but it is extremely rare.

I hope this clears up why boys will constantly try to hump your leg and why girls have a perpetual migraine

Not sure. If I were to extrapolate any sort of trend from contemporary nudity it's that female nudity is sexual and male nudity is comical. That's not to say that male nudity can't be sexual too. It's just that a guy running down the street with his bare ass is apparently hilarious, but I don't think I've ever seen female nudity shown frivolously like that. If female nudity is used in comedy it's because the woman is seducing someone, or a man walks in on her- generally something sexual in nature. It's never "haha she got caught with her pants down", which is apparently fine to do with men but not with women.

Edit: After fixing the video in the post above mine, I would just like to say: What the fuck did I just watch. I believe I've been proven wrong. However, if something like that ever made it onto Australian TV before 1am on SBS I'd eat my own ass.

Why worry what minority care about, if they will pay for the same stuff the majority does?

People are going to watch movies about heterosexual white males, even if they don't fit that demographic themselves. The reverse doesn't seem to be as true. That's why you have bookstores with a "black fiction" section in the US.

Hell, look at Watchmen, That movie was about a big blue penis. Sure, there was a little bit about an alternative Cold War and retired superheroes and a mid-life crisis and a love scene or two, but those are utterly forgettable, it seems, because they are standard and to be expected. But a big blue penis...WTF?

Butts are allowed on Youtube, I saw breasts on a music video once (NIN possibly?), and Marilyn Manson's cancelled movie trailer... never seen a penis or vagina though, personally don't have a problem with nudity, but w/e.

OT: To clarify, I think it's an equal split between male and female nudity, but I see very little of either.

Well in my experience, female nudity is far more common than male nudity since female nudity carries with it a lower rating, take pornography for example, when a scene is all female, its considered 'softcore' but a s soon as a male is introduced, it becomes 'hardcore'. Softcore is more or less considered R-rated material whereas hardcore is NC-17.

As for that article, it's pretty much rubbish: It reinforces both an old stereotype and a more modern one. the first, as has been mentioned that women do not experience sexual arousal/desire. The second, the male fantasy that all women are at least somewhat bisexual.
