We have TVs at work that play that song about every five minutes. And I love every second of it. Her voice is really amazing. and dat bod!!!

Pop music has always been simple and catchy for the most part. Just look at The Beatles. Simple of course does not always mean bad and of course some people's taste differs from others. Sometimes, I don't want to listen to an uber-complex band like Tides of Man. I want to just sing along and get my groove on.

Here's a hint... don't listen to what's popular, it generally doesn't turn out well. There's plenty of good new music, but like every other media one must look for it. Its not going to drop in your lap, maybe rarely show up on the radio stations. Aside from established awesome (I've no idea what music you consider awesome, so I can't give recommendations), one has to get out there and find the "new awesome".
Pop music hasn't changed since the inception of record companies, while I personally make exceptions for about every generation, the general rule is that most of it is trash that hardly survives beyond its "popular" era.

I'd bet a lot of money that there is more music that is being created now than at any point in human history, so I find it a little weird when people talk about "music today". Like, have you heard all of the music today? Probably not, right? OP instead of getting mad at pop music, dig a little deeper and I promise, no matter what genre you're into, you'll find some decent stuff that's been made in the last 2-5 years.

Now this is where I get confused, because I always thought "pop" meant "popular".

Well it's the internet attitude. What's popular is not responded to well outside of the biggest sites (i.e. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook). In fact there are reasons to despise some of the stuff no matter what type of entertainment it is (Film, music, games etc.). Those songs are still selling tens of thousands every week (the US Top 10 will usually have at least 100,000 sold per week per song) but unless you go to the videos themselves or check the sights you probably wouldn't know.

And with everything the whole quality subjectivity and personal taste issues shine through. Hence why I didn't bother posting links to any recent (hit) songs that I like.

That is a wonderful way to word it! I like the album, well enough, but have always felt as though it was just lacking a bit. Still, ARTPOP gets more plays than any of her other albums for me.

It's alright. I didn't listen to Warrior until just before Crazy Kids came out as a single, I just get fussy with dates.

Personally I think the biggest issue with BTW and ARTPOP is that the fanbase doesn't seem able to realise that we're probably never going to get another The Fame. The Fame was copied to death (Rihanna's "Loud", Britney Spears' "Femme Fetalle") and Poker Face became the new standard to base your dance club song off throughout 2009-2012. And The Fame Monster was a once in a lifetime never going to replicate affair because it was made under certain circumstances which she will not likely be in ever again.

...hmmm I think I dig it, though not sure about the whispered vocals, some songs are never as good as their first 30 seconds (which is like...the make or break moment, where once it lays down its hook/chorus its eather really good, just as or a big disappointment)....still I'll have to give it multiple listens

Music will always have shit in it, it's just that right now we are immersed in it, rather than time making the shit sift away while the good ones remain in our memory. Music isn't any worse off than it used to be, just like how young people aren't any worse off than the young people of the last generation.

Wait about ten years, then look for the critically acclaimed stuff. You know, the stuff that people keep going back to listen to.

Selection bias is a thing, eventually we figure out what music is timeless and good from the large majority of dated 'pop' churn. There is good music though. Even some of the really stupid/pop sounding stuff is actually quite good.

You are not 'old' yet, I haven't found anyone decent to listen too since The Corrs and that was back in 1990. I just rely on the oldies, underground bands, and instrumental orchestras... well I do stand corrected for one artist Kathrine Jenkins isn't too bad but she's also been performing since she was a munchkin but only came into world acclaim when she sang not only for the pope but the queen of england. I believe she also did a bit on Doctor Who.

Those songs are 400ish years old and even the least informed of us still recognize some of them. in 400 years time noone will remember who Micheal jackson or Madonna are let alone Justin beiber but we may still be walking down the aisle to Pachabel's cannon.

This right here. The good stuff from the past we still listen to was the cream of the crop. There's probably just as much shitty music from the Led Zepplin days lost to time as there is playing on the radio or on itunes right now.

In fact in the Led Zeppelin days that crappy pop music that is now forgotten was more popular in the charts than the classic rock from that era.
The first and second Led Zeppelin albums were released in 1969. Also released that year was the "Abbey Road" album by the Beatles, "Let it Bleed" by the Rolling Stones, and "David Bowie" by David Bowie.

Having said that, it's very difficult to predict in advance what elements of culture will last.

Rick Astley was a one hit wonder. Never gonna give you up was always popular since its release. Albeit it was school disco popular but popular nonetheless. You could say the same about Britney Spears etc. They will be remembered for a while (its almost 20 years now)

I actually like some of nikki minaj's songs (not so much beiber but im not ruling out that he might surprise me) but I dont think they will be remembered. They might possibly be remembered as "remember that baby baby baby song" or "remember the sir mixalot rip off"

For me it has always sucked, in a sense that there were only a few songs on the top charts that i liked and that hasnt changed. And even those really good ones from the old days are only that great because of nostalgia, if i add any of them to my playlist i get tired of them pretty fast, but maybe thats just me.

It's better now than what it was during the last 10 years. I'm "old" myself, so music from the '90s is where my tastes lie, but the '00s had almost no good music. There's actually enough songs out there on the radio that I can listen to it again.
